  • Have only submitted 2 coins to PCGS... one was just a straight cross... the other is languishing along side of some of Marty's coins on an Econ submission, and I know it's not gonna be a homerun... a few coins to NGC, but no homeruns thusfar...

Not really a homerun but more like just getting on base compared to you guys but I picked up a 1995 DDO Lincoln with a bag of 5,000 wheaties. Sent it in last year expecting a 66 and it came back a 68 RD.
    I was pleased! image

I've never hit any homeruns with PCGS, only a couple of singles and doubles.

The best surprise was a 1796 dime. When I purchased it in the 1980s, it was graded VF-30. The piece is a late die state, which results in a loss of detail in the certer of the obverse. There is an adjustment mark at 6:00 o'clock on the rim of the reverse.

I graded the piece EF-45 because it had considerable luster within the letters and stars. When I sent it in I figured I might get an EF. I was pleasantly surprised when the piece came back in a PCGS AU-50 holder.

    Here is a picture.

    image

I have hit several homeruns with the folks across the street. At times they have upped my anticipated grade by as much as 20 points! image Still I've gotten a few body bags that made me angry, especially when I see some of the garbage that makes it into holders now and then. image

    Bill,
    What is it graded?

My best was a $2 Ike that graded MS67. It now resides with a high end Ike collector and I have many more seated and bust coins in my collection to show for it!

I've made about twelve 1949-P's in 66RD. I paid $20 for one of them, the rest were under $5 each. $300 coins. I sent in a raw 1940-D Merc that came back 68FB. I sent a 19-S lincoln back for grade review (MS63RD holder), it came back MS64RD.

  • 1904 $20 - paid AU money for it. Came back MS64.
    1909 $2.5 - paid about $150 for it. Came back MS63.
    1904 $2.5 - paid about $200 for it. Came back MS64 (I think it'll go 65 at NGC).
    1878 $1 REV of 79 VAM203 - Paid $400 even for it. Came back MS65! (I think/hope it's a pop1 VAM).

This may not qualify, since I didn't buy the coin but I can't help myself. About 10 years ago, my grandfather gave me about 25 peace dollars (litterly in a coffee can) and all of them appeared to be about XF-AU. The 34-S looked like a nice XF/AU coin so I sent it in to Pcgs. Came back MS62.

One I bought. 3 legged buffalo last year that I bought at my local coin shop as an XF. Came back AU53, sold it. Profit of $500.00

  • Bought a raw, ugly, dirty 90CC Morgan for $225.00

A couple of acetone soaks, a quick dip(very quick) and a trip to PCGS produced an MS64 that I sold to a dealer at a show who offered me Greysheet ask. I didn't have the slabbed coin for even 72 hours before I turned it. Almost wish I had kept it, but I was temporarily blinded by $$$.

I have, however, struck out many, many times. One home run does not equate to a decent batting average.

Bought this 1892-S $20 Liberty Double Eagle back in the early 1980's and kept it raw for ~30 years, until I submitted it to PCGS last April 2004.

The coin came back as a population 1/0 PCGS MS-65. image

I bought a toned Rosy set for $100. Resold it for $165 after taking out 3 coins (so I'm already ahead $65). The 1953S came back MS67FB which was a pop3 at the time, and boththe 46P and 61D came back MS66FB (hoped for MS67FB). My $100 investment turned into about $600 of profit (after grading fees). image

Course, then there's this one. Bought this 1794 1c on ebay for $30 - no surprise since its obviously in Poor condition. Once I got the coin, I determined (with some help) that the coin was a head of 1793 variety, worth more than $30 (last one I saw sell was a Fair-2 that Heritage sold for $340). Sent the coin in and it came back 1794 Head of 1793 in PCGS PO01 grade (pop 1 with 16 graded higher).

I once bought a proof 1938 Jefferson nickel as a business strike for $2. Unfortunately I have no idea where that coin is today image

I've had pretty good luck with PCGS submissions. My first one was a 1922-D cent bought over the counter at Stacks in NY for $140, came back MS65RD. I've made a bunch of FS nickels, my best was a 1979 from a $3 roll that went MS64FS and sold for over $200. I also made a 1964 in MS66 that was a pop 4/0 at the time. I've tried to follow the Mad Marty path to riches, my best effort so far was a $15 1960 Proof Franklin that graded PF67CAM.

Of course, my best scores of all may be sitting in the grading room right now, I'll let you know in 65 to 85 days. image
