1911 $2 1/2 Indian -- bought as a 1911 for $175, but after inspecting it closer realized it was a 1911-D! Now in an XF-40 1911-D Weak D holder (same grade I bought it as)
1872 2 cent -- bought as a VF-20 for about $250, now in an XF-40 holder

I was pleased!
The name is LEE!
The best surprise was a 1796 dime. When I purchased it in the 1980s, it was graded VF-30. The piece is a late die state, which results in a loss of detail in the certer of the obverse. There is an adjustment mark at 6:00 o'clock on the rim of the reverse.
I graded the piece EF-45 because it had considerable luster within the letters and stars. When I sent it in I figured I might get an EF. I was pleasantly surprised when the piece came back in a PCGS AU-50 holder.
Here is a picture.
I have hit several homeruns with the folks across the street. At times they have upped my anticipated grade by as much as 20 points! Still I've gotten a few body bags that made me angry, especially when I see some of the garbage that makes it into holders now and then.
What is it graded?
My best was a $2 Ike that graded MS67. It now resides with a high end Ike collector and I have many more seated and bust coins in my collection to show for it!

1909 $2.5 - paid about $150 for it. Came back MS63.
1904 $2.5 - paid about $200 for it. Came back MS64 (I think it'll go 65 at NGC).
1878 $1 REV of 79 VAM203 - Paid $400 even for it. Came back MS65! (I think/hope it's a pop1 VAM).
Came back in a VF35 holder. Very nice profit on it when I sold it after upgrading
a few years later.

One I bought. 3 legged buffalo last year that I bought at my local coin shop as an XF. Came back AU53, sold it. Profit of $500.00
A couple of acetone soaks, a quick dip(very quick) and a trip to PCGS produced an MS64 that I sold to a dealer at a show who offered me Greysheet ask. I didn't have the slabbed coin for even 72 hours before I turned it. Almost wish I had kept it, but I was temporarily blinded by $$$.
I have, however, struck out many, many times. One home run does not equate to a decent batting average.

The coin came back as a population 1/0 PCGS MS-65.

I've always dreamed about finding a satin or matte proof obsolete coin for sale priced as an uncirculated example.
I bet that there are more out there to be found than we'd expect...

Gorgeous twenty Stuart. You gotta love it when you submit a coin you've owned raw for 30 years.
I love the 1916-D found in the cash register drawer and the matte proof bufallo nickel bought as unc for $8.
I submitted to PCGS a couple of years ago and it graded PR-66.
I've had pretty good luck with PCGS submissions. My first one was a 1922-D cent bought over the counter at Stacks in NY for $140, came back MS65RD. I've made a bunch of FS nickels, my best was a 1979 from a $3 roll that went MS64FS and sold for over $200. I also made a 1964 in MS66 that was a pop 4/0 at the time. I've tried to follow the Mad Marty path to riches, my best effort so far was a $15 1960 Proof Franklin that graded PF67CAM.
Of course, my best scores of all may be sitting in the grading room right now, I'll let you know in 65 to 85 days.
