1845 Large Cent.

A local Coin & Pawn shop has gone out of business. The Coin & Pawn shop claim that this is an 1845 Proof Large Cent.
The auction co. called me and asked me about it, but I'm not experienced enough to tell.
There were only twenty 1845 Proofs made, so I kinda doubt it. Plus its been circulated.
The auction company would like to see if someone here can Attribute (Newcomb #) this coin before they sell it.
They have allowed me to photograph it & post it here for your opinions.
The coin is a little darker than shown. Too much light I guess.
Thanks for your help!

    POLISHED
Today's mighty oak is just yesterday's nut that held its ground.
  • I'm wrong. Not whizzed-- but cleaned and retoned. IMHO, Awfully shiney on the devices isn't it?

  • I would send it to Bob Grellman If you really want a better opinion. I think it's only a buck plus postage. Try EAC.org hard to tell from a picture need to see it in person but probably recolored.

  • Don't waste the time and postage sending it to Bob Grellman. Its cleaned and not a proof.

  • I told them I wasn't an expert on Large cents.
I just collect them, but the auction co. and the bank want to make sure so they can get all the money they can out of the auction.
After looking at some of the coins, it was easy to see why they went out of business.
Almost every coin was cleaned, what a shame. The bank was not happy when I told them that.

It's a polished, retoned piece of crap that is not worth $10 because of the reasons already cited.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

It belongs in the bargain bin.

  • Thanks Bill, I told the bank that the "Coin" & Pawn shop turned collectable coins into novelty items.
I said you can find coins like that as prizes in those 25 cent claw/crane games you see at the fair.
I've never seen a banker so depressed!
