Just received a bulk mailing letter today from PCGS, and it wasn't a Christmas present:
-- Effective January 1, 2005 Regular service submissions must have at least 5 coins.
-- Economy grading fee is going up to $18 per coin.
-- U.S. and World Moderns are going up to $14.
-- World Economy is going up to $20.
-- Mint Errors are going up to $40.
Ho Ho Ho indeed.

When in doubt, don't.

You asked for it, you got it, PCGS
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Maybe they've hired another grader and needed to cover the costs. Maybe things will move super fast!

Hey, cheaper and quicker and continuing to charge to the front!
<< <i>What a shame that I got my membership ID# from NGC yesterday. >>
I just sent off my third submission in the last month. They've already turned the first two while I have coins growing moldy at PCGS.

This way, I can spend my money on coins, and don't spend ANY money on fees for "grading opinions"!

1955 to date errors cost me $10 at NGC, and usually take 2 weeks. I don't think PCGS is too interested in that business. They're selecting the submissions they want, and I'd say that's just business.
and it sets us apart from practitioners and consultants. Gregor
<< <i>Good thing I already know what grade my coins are! >>
Most of us already know what our coins grade. It's the people we're selling them to that want that extra opinion.

To bad more collectors did not have your knowledge and extra money to buy coins with!!

I just mailed in my application through the ANA membership # to them yesterday also. I should get my ID # within a few weeks

Who cares on most of this, if you don't care about World or errors(an error is an error, send it somewher else), moderns and economy US is up 2 bucks and regular is the same but you got to send in 5, big deal---------------------------------------BigE
Knowledge is the enemy of fear
I think even so-so grade moderns just gained a buck in value....
"b. Mr. Hall is responible for the financial performance of the Company's authenication and grading operations. Accordingly, the 2005 Bonus Plan provides that the amount of his bonus compensation will be determined on the basis of the contribution that the Company's consolidated operating income in fiscal 2005 (the Grading Contribution)." And there's nothing wrong with that.
As a publicly held, for profit, company, Collector's Universe is looking for profit. And with the boom in grading coins, the PCGS division is it! Most of the complaints I've seen are for the slow turn arounds and it wasn't getting any better. Economy seems to be putting a strain on the rest of the levels. My guess is the changes were made to protect the Regular service level and shore up any problems with it's turn around times.

I didn't get that e-mail.. Maybe only those that were naughty got them for X-mas (Marty, I'm sure you got one:Funny.
Well, I guess that now's the time for me to get "crackin" on those third-tier TPGS holder crackouts that I've been planning to submit to PCGS... before the New Year...

<< <i>I agree with Neil. If the past is any indication, look for NGC to raise their rate for economy to $18 within sixty days. >>

Looking for PCGS AU58 Washington's, 32-63.
Don't count on an "exception" being made to THAT "rule"
I think the changes are modest or affect mostly lower volume stuff - EXCEPT mint error. I think the $30 fee is already WAY too high compared to ANACS or NGC - AND it took about 75 days for my last 9 coin mint error submission. A FAR cry from the "approximately 30 days" on their site! I can't understand why, if generating MORE revenue is the goal, they don't allow GAURANTEED turn around times for mint error at the express level (AT LEAST).
This, however, is a case of someone taking something popular and capitalizing to the point of gouging. A 50 cent piece of plastic shouldn't cost that much, especially in the bulk amounts they receive.
