    purrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrty!
  • Nice.

That coin must have been slabbed before the full step designation for Jeffs. image

Nope, the * designation is pretty new.

I'm a bit baffled by the "star" along with the T (for toned). I would swear that NGC stopped using the T several years ago and the star designation only began perhaps 2 years ago (at the most). But I looked the coin up with NGC and it is listed as a 67*. I truly had no idea that the two attributions overlapped in time. One of the prettier of the questionable hoard!

    Dick,Great coin.You always seem to outdo yourself!image
Great coins are not cheap, and cheap coins are not great!
  • Beautiful one! That one is very colorful.

The star was used a while back, along with the T for toned and W for white. I believe NGC was attributing FS for Full Step Jeffs at the time. These steps look good but you can't see the bottom step. NGC would only give out FS for 6 Full Steps, while PCGS gave it out for 5 Full Steps. So this coin looks like it easily has 5 steps I can't tell about the last one.

Just curious- how do you know if a coin is from the Appalachian Hoard if it is not attributed?

  • << <i>how do you know if a coin is from the Appalachian Hoard if it is not attributed? >>

It will have certain colors not normally seen on any other toned Jefferson -- hence the reference to "controversial coins" made by Solid.

Take it for whatever that means to you.

Thanks TonedPeaceNut. I've looked for information on this hoard before but have never found anything in depth. If anyone knows of any resources please let me know.

Coupled with the answer already provided, check that font used by NGC on the insert. See how it is different on Richard's Jefferson? NGC used that insert for a very short period of time, but it was exactly during that time all of the Appalachian Hoard Jeffersons were slabbed.

As I recall, mine is in a newer NGC slab type than the one posted.

-And as pretty as your Jefferson is, I don't believe it to be from the AH, imho.

If I'm not mistaken the first grouping of these coins hit the market in the middle of 2000. At least thats about when Paragon started to sell them.
If It doesn't have great eye appeal, I don't want it.

I'm baffled that it isn't "U" for ugly.

    I have a similar-toned 45-D MS67* T Appalacian with slab # 291281-029, just a
few numbers off from this one.

My daughter has several that carry the Star and the" T". They came out of the first group that Paragon sold.

Some of the first groupings that Paragon sold carried the 291281- Serial Numbers, so MrD's Jefferson is from the Appalachian Hoard. He may have tweaked the coin a little too much.

I was refering to nwcs's Jefferson, not Richards.

I've owned seven of these throughout the years and most certainly, greattoning's is among the finest, no doubt, from the hoard.

From what I recall (Cameron?!) NGC used this font in August of 2000.

  • I don't remember the year off the top of my head. I'd have to look in conder101's book but I do know they only used that font for a few months. 2000 sounds about right.

See? And I thought it was honestly, just a bare few weeks (not months) it was used...
