Ryan Leaf Thread

Enough already about that Nolan Ryan dude !
What about a thread for the other Ryan ... Ryan Leaf ?
This thread will be a gathering place for the legions of Leaf's fans
to post scans of their favorite cards of their hero and to discuss his illustrious career.
I'll start it off. Also, I fully expect this thread to eclipse the Nolan thread in number of responses.

I did see that another SoCal boy got himself back into drugs (Marinovich).
I've been a fan of Brees despite his lack of production the past few years. However, when compared to Aikman, Elway, and Marino's 1st 3 seasons, he actually had better stats. Go figure.
1-0 baby. Live it up while it lasts!!

Here is the 1998 Draft Day analysis on Ryan Leaf by CNN/SI:
Leaf appears to be the hot QB in this draft, and he led WSU to a storybook season...He is a physically imposing QB with great size and strength....he is very sturdy and durable in the pocket, and is a surprisingly good athlete for his size...He has a strong arm and shows good touch, and can change up the speed on his passes...He has good feet, but is not really a scrambler. However, he can stand in and take the big hits....He is a very naturally gifted player, but could improve on his throwing mechanics, although it is not a major problem....There are no physical or athletic limitations to hold Leaf back from becoming a great NFL QB. However, there appears to be some minor nagging questions in the area of maturity and his mental approach to the game. He is perceived as not always an easy guy to work with, and he tends to beat to his own drummer...As good as he is, he can have some streaks on the field where he looks like he has forgotten everything he has been taught...There seems to be a nagging question here that something might be missing, but it may be hard to verbalize it...However, Leaf made all the right moves at the end of his season when he declared for the NFL draft...Unless he turns some teams off in individual interviews between now and the draft, he should have no problems....Nobody will question his physical abilities, and it is not outlandish to think that he could be the first pick of the draft, instead of Peyton Manning....There is a huge upside with Leaf, and it is conceivable that he could be one of the best young QB’s in the game in 2-3 years...His ability to play as physical as he does and take the hits that will obviously come, when playing for a team that obviously doesn’t have a very good OL, will help him get over the tough times as a team builds around him.

I'm sure the San Diego Chargers front office can verbalize it quite well today.
But that doesn't stop someone from enjoying the cards. A Ryan Leaf collection would be a great cross-section of modern football, and could probably be had rather cheaply. I have always had a soft spot for those who leave too early, or never live up to huge expectations. Usually it's the tragic figures like Ken Hubbs or Harry Agganis. Ryan Leaf, Ricky Williams, etc. are in there, too, though obviously subject to less sympathy. People were still spending pretty heavily on Rick Ankiel after he blew up. There's something about the lost cause that appeals to at least a few people. And I think it'd be great to have those people display their fetish on the Registry.

As someone said earlier.............a total waste of God given talent
The big sportsbar in town has numerous signed jerseys on display, both game worn and replica, and they in no way have any intention of ever displaying a Ryan Leaf jersey. They do have a Dave Dickenson (who also grew up here and went to the same high school as Leaf) autographed game worn Calgary Stampeders jersey prominently displayed

I have one of those too, Dave use to work out at my gym and gave me one just because I asked him if he ever keeps and old game used jerserys. Super nice guy!!!

What I cannot understand is why the Chargers have drafted Leaf, Brees, and Rivers when there were so many other needs (and still are) on that team.
If I were a Bolts fan I would not be happy.

That's right. Dickenson's nearly a god here in Great Falls...just the absolute total opposite of Leaf. I really wish the Chargers had given Dickenson a REAL chance to make the team and play when they had him Same old sh!t about him being too small and whatever else. All I know from seeing several of his CFL games (which were ALWAYS shown live here, to a PACKED sportsbar) is that his teams WON when he played...same as Flutie and Garcia when they played in the CFL.

My thoughts exactly as they pertain to Rivers. I may be wrong, but I really think Brees is the quarterback of their future. I just do not understand why they drafted Rivers when they still have NO solid receivers If they had drafted Fitzgerald or another of the available receivers to go along with Brees and LT, they'd have the beginnings of a real offense. Instead, it's basically the same as last year...give the ball to LT and hope at least one of their receivers actually shows up and finally learns how to catch the ball

This one is limited to only 7200 in existence :
Also, since this is the only one numbered 6529 of 7200, it is a true one of one ...

Coach Leaf

"I'd be more than happy to have Ryan Leaf join my staff or our program at any time in the future," said Mike Price, Leaf's former Washington State coach and the new head coach at Texas-El Paso. "We'd be honored to have somebody of Ryan's caliber coaching with us, and that's a possibility for us in the future."
It's a possibility for Leaf as long as he completes the college course work he left unfinished after becoming the No. 2 overall choice in the 1998 NFL draft.
On the eve of another NFL season, the career change also appears to mark the epilogue on Leaf's infamous tenure in San Diego. Just as the Chargers are set to unveil another quarterback of the future – Philip Rivers – Leaf has moved from San Diego to Moscow, Idaho, a nine-mile commute across the state border from Pullman, Wash., to attend classes at his alma mater.
Just don't expect him to talk about it with the San Diego media.
"Man, what the (expletive)?" Leaf said when contacted by the Union-Tribune. "How'd you get my number? If The San Diego Union-Tribune calls me again ... Man, you fools are stupid."
Leaf, who still loathes the public limelight, then hung up.

Too bad Ryan Leaf wasn't on a wiener card. That would be perfect! Get a still shot of him crabbing at that reporter in the locker room with a pack of Oscar Meyer's floating next to his head.
Michael Jordan, Cal Ripken, Barry Sanders dominate the list of professional athletes who left on top of a long and prosperous career. NFL Films has added a new name to that list, Ryan Leaf. Dude :
This is supposed to be a positive thread
in celebration of Leaf's accomplishments while at the same time
helping to generate interest in a Ryan Leaf master collection on the PSA set registry.
Let's get back on track.

I actually know of someone buying a piece of Leaf memorabilia recently - a man paid $15 for an autographed Leaf mini helmet during the closing sale from a local card store. I suppose you can justify the purchase this way - if you remove the Leaf signature, you then have an unsigned mini helmet at about 1/3 off the normal price.

Would the Bears be better off with Jeff George or Ryan Leaf ?

Look at George's stats. 154 TD passes (vs. 113 INTs), 57.9% completions, over 27600 yards passing, a 4000 yard season (and another season leading the NFL in passing yards) add up to a QB who is more than adequate as a fill-in.

NickM is correct that Jeff George has put up great stats over the years.
Much better than the average starting quarterback in the NFL.
Still, if you look at the won / lost records,
of the teams he played at least 13 games in a season for, only 2 of the 7 had a winning record.
I've always enjoyed watching him, and hope he does well.
As for Vargha's comment about biggest busts ... why always the obsession with large breasts ?
