The Best Upgrade or Worst Downgrade You've Ever Experienced?

Whether a crossover from an anacs slab to a pcgs slab or a raw coin you were positive was ms65, what is the best upgrade/worst downgrade you've experienced?

Do you mean the crack out game or upgrades in your collection with different coins.

Biggest upgrade - Type II gold dollar. When I first started collecting I went from a Fine-12 with a weak date to an MS-65.

Biggest down grade - Pole to Cap 1795 large cent. I sold an MS-62, brown to raise money for another coin and later replaced it with an AU-50.

Biggest upgrade in the crack out game - AU-58 to MS-63. I also had a couple of MS-64s that became MS-65s. Price difference was larger for those than it was for the jump from AU-58 to MS-63.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
  • i'm refering to the crack out game...for a sec, i thought your very same coin that was graded f12 went ms 65...whew!

I've had a couple of au/58's go to ms/64, and a couple of au/58's go to ms/63. Happens quite often with buffalo nickels.

I had a Walker go from ms/63 to au/58. I was looking for an upgrade. image

A bunch of raw coins that were bought at a certain grade, and slabbed MUCH higher.

  • Recently had a 1913-D T2 buffalo nickel and a 1913-S T2 buff each go from MS65 to MS66. On the other hand, I've had a couple of ANACS graded buffs go from MS62/63 to AU58.

The best a 1925S Merc went from MS63 No Bands to MS64 Full Bands on a cross over.

The worst a 1927S Merc went from MS63 to a Body Bag for Artificial Color on a cross over. Both coins were ANACS holdered coins to begin with.

Not bad seems how coins have only been sent in a handfull of times.

    Was NGC graded MS64RB.

First submission (in holder): DNC at MS63RB
Second submission (raw): Bodybag, Altered Surfaces
    Third submission: MS65BN, POP 1/0!

This is why it's so hard to find those nice 58s. Y'all keep cracking 'em out on me! image
  • Best (and only*) upgrade--a 1901 S quarter ANACS "net Good 04, scratched" to a PCGS G 06!

    * The only coin I ever cracked and resubmitted!
