“ Having amassed a vast numismatic library and a large collection over nearly a half century of active collecting, attended hundreds local and national shows, and being on a first name basis with many major dealers ought to count for something.”
Personally I will assume that your statement above is correct, and if it is, then you should definitely stay, as we need some additional serious collectors here.
Everyone gets tested the first few months, and as one other here said, the test period last about 6 months. Here are a few things you might keep in mind. Until you have been here a few months you will not learn whom you are talking to. There are people on here that are kids, and later you will find out you had a long debate with a 16 year old. There are people here that live on their computers, and post a comment on every subject, and every comment, because they have nothing else to do all day. There are great dealers and crooked dealers, although the crooked ones general get run out. There are geniuses in numismatics, and people with multi-million dollar collections. There are people that are very expert in studying the economics of this, and many other markets, and there are sheep that will follow any advice. There are promoters, and liars, that come here with big stories about their credentials that they created out of thin air. The longer you are here the more you will learn who people are. All of that being said, the people that post-here long term are the brave ones. There are nearly 15,000 members here and less than 100 that ever express their opinions on a regular basis.
One other thing you will find out here is that if you take the contarian point of view on an issue you better have your facts together to back up your point or you are going to get called, or slammed etc. Even getting slammed is not a bad thing, as it will make you re-evaluate your situation. If you think you are still right present more facts.
Also as many have said, “ this is not personal, just debate”.
You will also find that if you turn your P.M. on many may send you a message saying that they agree with you but just do not want to come out in the open with their opinion.
A lot of what you say is probably true...it's human nature. I havent noticed your post, so can't address their content, but you sound like a reasonable fellow, with quite a bit of coin knowledge. I'd like to see you stick around....don't take it too seriously here....we are all flawed.
Today's mighty oak is just yesterday's nut that held its ground.
there are a few idiots in every forum, what these sarcastic nay-sayers don't understand, most of us put very very little credence to their posts. we all know who they are, so don't let these quasi experts to upset you, consider the source and don't give them the time of delay. no one likes to be ignored, so this is a good lesson for them.
PCGS sets under The Thomas Collections. Modern Commemoratives @ NGC under "One Coin at a Time". USMC Active 1966 thru 1970" The real War.
Like I said once before ... when you post your opinion on an internet chatroom, be prepared to deal with the responses. If you don't want responses, then don't post. Pretty simple.
stick around and don't be afraid to state your opinion - you have as much right to be here as the rest of the members. stir up some runny puppy poo and take everything you read with a grain of salt. if someone complains about getting a coin back graded at ms68 instead of the ms69 that they thought it should be, tell them to either spend it of send it to you!
It seems as if you have been intimidated by the bungholes on these boards
This has turned into a fascinating thread. I've never been intentionally insulted, never been called a POS, never been intimidated by any "bungholes" or "inner circle". I've found people to be helpful, friendly, and very passionate about numismatics. I feel strongly that the attitude you bring to a social place such as this one largely determines the attitude that is directed back to you.
BTW, Eric, you're free to email me any other photos you've got lying around....
My style is impetuous, my defense is impregnable !
