Should Major take a hike???? A few observations on these boards!

I'm a newbie, albeit an 'ol boy. After lurking for a few months, I decided to sign-up and participate a few weeks ago. It's already improved my lousy typing, if nothing else.
As I've said, I believe these boards are for idling away a bit of time, having fun and learning a bit in the process.
IMO, some take it waaaaaaaay too seriously.
I believe there is an inner circle of active posters, and if you're not "in", you're "out". To me, that seems unfair and inappropriate. Who owns the airwaves or the internet? We all do!
I've been bashed to beejusus, and will confess to bashing back a bit too (it's human nature).
I've been "commanded" to post pix of coins I mentioned, but have neither the equipment nor the expertise to do so.
I've been accused of being a self-professed expert. Well, having amassed a vast numismatic library and a large collection over nearly a half century of active collecting, attended hunderds local and national shows, and being on a first name basis with many major dealers ought to count for something.
I've been asked "who are you", challenged to prove my credentials, and otherwise insulted.
I've been chastised for not posting a profile. When asked why, I explained "for the same reason that I don't have Coin World mailed to my home address." I also suspect that exposing an email adddress for PMs exposes you to spam--God knows I get enough of that alredy.
I've been called a liar (untrue) and a POS (like grading, that's subjective).
I've started a few threads that have drawn many comments, and have expressed my opinion on others' posts. I've tried to contribute and, yes, stir it up a bit, but keep getting bashed and harassed.
What happened to civility and mutual respect?? I see little of it here!
I probably should just paraphrase Dick Nixon statement in a press conference after he lost the California gubernatorial election, say that "you won't have Major to kick around anymore" and just give up posting on these boards.
Whadda' you think?? I'll go with the flow and follow the majority concensus. Should the Major retire form active service on these boards?

As far as PM's go, your email address isn't used. This forum site sends them back and forth!

I really don't know your story here on the forum but if you try to stir things up you'll get the same in return I suspect. Just relax and be nice to others and everything will be fine and in a couple of months you'll be one of the old timers here. mike
This type of whiny, self-serving, hey-look-at-me post is kind of pathetic and a waste of space.
Personally, I've always thought you were a troll.

Hang in there Major, and be yourself come hell or high water, and don't be intimidated by some of the old timers here.
I've only been here on the forum for a little more than a year, and have found that there are some very knowledgeable folks on the coin forum that you can gain alot of knowledge whether you've been collecting for 4 years or 40 like me...... Although I don't post to often in the coin forum I usually look at it daily, and have gained alot of respect for several of the old timers and newbies that post here.....
Now if you like to rant and rave you might want to take a look at the Open Forum occasionally, I can guarantee that you will find all the ranting and raving you want over there!

Wierd, i can't get the system to accept my comments. For a lousy typer, it's a real hasstle to re-do a post. I'll try again:
What, Me worry? No way I'd lose sleep over this silliness.
To quote the esteemed poster who called me a POS:

BTW, I forgot to mention being accused of stealing others' icons when I merely selected from the list that is available when you sign up for the Board. Hence, the beauty I now display!

Sit back and enjoy numismatics. I don't understand what the fuss is about, and in the meantime get a nice seated icon or maybe a barber, take your pick. Enjoy the hobby, stop stressing.

SAY IT AINT SO!
Stay if you want to stay- leave if you want to leave- I have to agree with Xpipe on this one. You're a new poster, and you come in with some inflammatory posts- additionally, you kept dropping into threads about moderns and posting unnecessary comments like "WHO CARES?" that do nothing to further the conversation. You must be aware of this- if not, you should be- but you have a certain amount of smugness that comes through your posts. Personally, I don't care, but all of these things tend to rub some people the wrong way when they have no idea who you are or if you're worth listening to. I always thought that you were trying to rub people the wrong way- if you are, I'm sure many around here would welcome that, as it adds more drama to the slower days....
If you ask for an opinion, expect it all.
If you share your opion, expect it all.
Since there are more than likely members on both sides of the fence be careful on your replies, stepping on members toes is easy & some get their feathers ruffled easily.
More than likely on 'interesting' topics the responces will start to wonder & go OT, some get funny, others (too) serious.
I reread my threads & replies, try not to generalize & keep on topic.....unless it's a quick sarcastic jab!
HAVE FUN HERE & instead of Nixon, think of Ronnie....Mr. Teflon!
-- If you lurk without posting then you won't take the risk of getting slammed.
-- However, most posters try to interpret the tone of other's posts (individual's perception), and will generally respond with either a collaborative and positive post of they read your tone as positive, or will perhaps get out the flame-throwers if they perceive a post to be inflamatory and taking the offensive.
For some this is just a fun part-time hobby, for others it's how they make their living (a business), and then there are some who enjoy inflamatory posts and debates... Each person can make this forum whatever they want...
Hope that you decide to stick around for a while -- there are some very bright people here who as a group have a tremendous collective knowledge of most (if not all) series of coins.
These Boards are a weath of information available to you simply for the asking via the keystroke.

Yeah, I'm seen as a bit of a wise guy sometimes as I like to stir it up a little and may speak with tounge in cheek from time to time! Nobody called me a woos or a milktoast!!
The "new kid on the block" isn't going to be the center of attention (not unless they make an @$$ of themselves, anyway -- in which case they may be, but not in the way they'd like). Over time, if you contribute, if you post in a way that's worthy of respect and you give same to others, respect is earned. Almost every busy form or message board I've ever been on has always had charges of "elite posters" or some "inner circle" clique which eats clueless or bombastic newbies for breakfast and merely remains indifferent toward the others. And it's usually the same elsewhere as here: contribute, but don't quickly be upset if you get little attention. After a while, respect is earned and you're "in," so to speak.
Having said that, I don't think there's any intent to be exclusionary; let's face it -- old friends who have known each other for a long time in a large group mingling situation are going to be more comfortable hanging with each other. They may small talk with others and *eventually* warm up, but don't expect to be made to feel like an "old friend" when you first meet and exchange pleasantries.
Bottom line is, only *you* can decide for yourself if you want to keep participating. Only you can decide for yourself if the aggravations you may be feeling are worth the other benefits or pleasures you derive from it. The last thing I'll say is this: I only came to this board about a month ago, and I'm not sensing much at all (if any) of the elitist/exclusionary attitude you seem to be experiencing.
Some become "active posters" as you say, and some "take their ball and go home"
Your call which one you choose, but if you're asking my opinion, I vote stick around. I like you.
In fact in one of your early threads I think I said "hang in there" because you're stirring up the same kind of stuff I myself used to stir up a couple years ago
(plus, I still wanna see those choice early coins of yours)
