Will this 1831 Bust Quarter grade EF ?

I'm thinking of sending this one in and was wondering if it would make the EF40 grade ahead of time.
Thanks

What does the reverse look like?

Going just from the pictures i would bet money it does not go less than 40, or higher than 50 - closer to the 40 swing of things.

Looks like it's got EF detail, but based on the pictures, I think PCGS will BB it as cleaned or altered surfaces.

Yes it should make 40 no problem.

I'm not as hot for that one as everyone above.

There is a lack of detail at the bust area, the hair at the shoulder and near the clasp is weak, the top of the cap is weak, and the area above the eye is also very weak.

The reverse isn't super strong either, to my eye.

    I say vf/35.

Don't get me wrong, it looks like a decent coin but I'm not sure if it makes full xf.

I would also say vf35, and I wonder about past cleanings?? I'm not sure how leniant pcgs is with old cleanings with these types of classic coins....

Agree w Darin re the obverse. This series has closed collar strikes, though you'll often see weak stars due to out of parallel dies (you'll also see a lot of die cracks). I think the reverse is a no questions asked EF, but I don't think there's enough detail in the curls behind the head & above the forehead.

Also, how bad are those spots on the obverse? they don't look like carbon. If they're nasty, the coin could be bagged for environmental damage.

  • I was going to say vf-35 but I always grade a little low.

  • Hi,

Your coin had tremendous eye appeal, IMHO it should grade at EF40.

Please let us know the grade when you get it back.

I would grade the coin VF35, if it grades out at all. The color on the coin looks "off" to me. Perhaps it is the way you took the picture, but it looks like something may have been done to it that warrants a no-grade.

Keep in mind, however, that we're all grading from a picture and you're the only one with the coin in hand.
