1805 Draped Bust Half -- How would you grade it? - Grade Posted

PCGS assigned a grade of XF40. I thought it had a shot at 45. The strike on the 1801 - 1807 draped busts are all over the place and this one has the eagle bust feathers of a higher grade, an attribute that PCGS seems to like. Luster is not all that great which may account for the XF40 grade.

I still like the coin a great deal even though I had to trade a small herd of my prized buffalos.

Just back from PCGS - an 1805 Draped Bust Half Overton 109a. How would you grade it?

I'd grade it "Excellent" and "Original".

Great coin! image I'll guess PCGS was a little more conservative and gave it a VF30 or 35, but I think the coin is EF40. Awesome die cracks!

By the picture the coin is a least an EF-40. It could be 5 to 15 points better if there is luster between the stars. I think that I see some, but I'd have the examine the coin in person to clarify that.

The weakness in the center of the reverse does not effect the grade here. It might be negative for some buyers, especially some fusy type collectors who want an example with the design fully struck up.

I guess I'm in the majority here ... EF45; maybe a 50 depending on luster. Nice piece, great die cracks image

EF45. I like the coin. These are tough to grade because of the inconsistent strikes. This one is attractive but falls alittle short of AU IMHO

  • It should grade CH.VF but since it is in a PCGS holder it mostly likely graded XF.

How would I grade it. I would grade it on a 0 through 70 scale, in a bright room, and I would use no less than a 10X to 17X lens.

What would I assign as a grade.......xf to au with that pic.
