    A short time after mintage of the first Morgan dollars in 1878 commenced, someone advised the Mint that the eagle should have seven tail feathers, instead of the eight shown on the coin and this change was promptly made.

    Morgan dollars were struck in fairly large quantities from 1878 through 1904 when production ceased because of a silver shortage

    The Pittman Act of 1918 provided that silver dollars be melted and converted to silver bars for export.

    Silver dollars were readily available at banks throughout the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s and Redfield bought them whenever he could.
