    A short time after mintage of the first Morgan dollars in 1878 commenced, someone advised the Mint that the eagle should have seven tail feathers, instead of the eight shown on the coin and this change was promptly made.

    The Pittman Act of 1918 provided that silver dollars be melted and converted to silver bars for export.
