Wives and coins

For my birthday yesterday, my wife purchased me the new edition overton early half dollar book, the new red book on morgan dollars, two very nice whitman folders, a new coin magazine subscripton, and a gift certificate to my favorite local coin store. Somehow I have won her over to the advantages of coin collecting, and she is actually supportive of this habit.?!? Has anybody else had luck in converting wives over to numismatics?

My style is impetuous, my defense is impregnable !

Sooner or later they want you to sell all of them and buy them something. So I would guess she is buttering you up for something or you are spending enough money on her to where she don't care what you do.
My brother collects guns. As long as he keeps his wife well supplied in Longaberger Baskets she don't care......

You think this mountain boy from Virginia does not have a gun collection too? What kind of safe you think I got?

1) When I take money out of the personal bank account for coins, I always repay the loan with 10-20% more. You do this, and she'll like to see the money go. You have to be SURE that you always put it back with extra, though.
2) I've sold massive portions of my set to accomplish personal financial goals... I paid my truck off three years early this way. I've cover monthly bills where we wouldnt have had the money without them. I justify having the money tied up into them by my willingness to sell them if the financial need should arise.
3) When at a show, early in my marrage, my wife commented on how pretty a rainbow dollar was. I bought it for her. I tried to buy a nice example at each show and give it too her. Pretty soon, she was saving up for shows so she could get even better examples.

Where is the Lady Lucy of Bop anyhow? I figured she would of had something to say about this thread by now.

I have a sneaky feeling that if most (I didn't say all) wives knew what some of our coins were really worth there would be tremendous pressure on us to sell them.

Hi drainB. Proverbs 25: 24 makes a lot of sense!

Agree that wives and girlfriends don't mix.
Then I found all those buffalo nickels in a roll one day and she encourages me to some extent now.
Her father collects coins and her grandfather gave her a Morgan Dollar that she cherishes. He also gave me many Barber dimes and quarters and some German coins that she knows I appreciate. So I buy some coins now and then and she is fine with it.
Though she still thinks I'm insane.

No kidding, I am quite fortunate that my wife of 27 years has supported me in all my endeavors and
undertakings all these years. She trusts me 110% and is standing right beside me as I write this.
It IS true...behind every successful man is a GOOD woman and fellas, I've got a Gem!
When she recently saw 2 coins that were worth $3000 apiece suddenly become worth twice that much APIECE...she smiled and kissed me and said, "that's my man!"
OOOh OOOh-the carnival barkers of HSN are on-Oh boy!
1999-2003 S-Mint State Quarters $299.95 plis $11.95 S/H
Girlfriends and coins don't mix either.
aint that the truth!
I can hear the wheels and gears turning in my girl's head.....goes something like this:
"oh my god, if he continues spending all his money on these useless coins, he won't have any money left to buy me a diamond ring! If he has his way, I'll end up with a Morgan Dollar on my finger instead of a diamond! Must think of something fast! Must convince him to stop buying stupid coins and save for a rock...a nice big one....bigger than all my married friends!"

Boom:
What she was really saying is "Well, he just made $6000 profit so that means I can spend a few thousand on something for me and he will never know".
She won't even tell you this but that is what she is thinking. Too bad she does not know that since you are keeping them for your collection it means you really have not made any money until you sell them. Net result you just LOST a few thousand.
Over the past dozen or so years she has seen enough of my coins that she knows great eye appeal from also-rans. She is also brutal on marks too. Sometimes I might get carried away on a particular coin that is sent to me. And when she calls it a MS 63 or 64 (when it's a 65 or higher) I know there's a problem. Other times she'll lack at a PQ64 coin and wonder "why isn't that a 65?" Often times she is right.
I got a kick out of her running around buying good flying eagles at local shows at times. And at the same time she was trying to find a choice MS64 just to see what one looked like....and couldn't find one to satisfy herself. Guess I'm just lucky.
