Suggestions for a cool type coin to purchase for $100-$200ish

airplanenutairplanenut Posts: 22,142 ✭✭✭✭✭
Howdy,

My parents have no idea what to give me for my birthday, so I suggested maybe they foot a coin from this Sunday's upcoming show... I think I want a nice type coin... original, and probably circulated.

What ideas do you have? Pictures are very acceptable examples image

airplanenut: Make it interesting!!! Get a nice coin from a year that means something to you. Maybe your parents wedding year. The birthyear of your parents or even your grandparents. Or some other year that is of interest to you. This way, when you pick the coin you want, it has a double play value for you. Personal historical value to you.

    Best to you!

I might be there Sunday to help you out!!!

Oreville, I like the idea, but I really want something older than that--I really love coins out of the 1800s and prior... maybe a nice 1787 if I see one... those are 200 years my elder.

  • What about a seated liberty half dime? Two cent piece? Three cent piece? Those odd denominations always make cool type coins.
  • fivecentsfivecents Posts: 11,207 ✭✭✭✭✭
Jeremy...What about a 1914-S and 1927-S Quarter in VF. They are both low mintage and underrated.
  • orevilleoreville Posts: 11,950 ✭✭✭✭✭
    airplanenut: Why not 1887?

Or even 1837? Or something like this with a special date such as 1812. This one is a little more than 100-200 but you get the idea.

I think a bust half or early cent or half cent are pretty good choices. You can get decent coins for your $200.

  • I'll tell you what NOT to buy..."P&D MS-69 Jefferson Nickels Graded" On the serious side, at around $200 a small gold coin, or how about a nice MS65 IHC image

I would get an original XF barber half...

  • Varlis had a good one there... could always look for a nice unplayed around with Capped Bust Half-Dime image XF is about $100, VF-30 around $60-$70... AUs I'm not sure, low-end MS grades are a couple hundred... didn't you mention in my thread that you needed to get one that looked like mine... image And the search will be challenging... so you might wanna have a back-up... like a different denom Bust Coin...

I say pick up a Half Cent because of low mintages and the prices are good as well. For $200 you can get a real nice one.

Jeremy, how about a nice XF seated dollar, say 1859-O or 1860-O

I like the bust half dime suggestion. You can get a nice eye appealing xf/au coin and still be under that $200 limit.

An auish $1 gold piece might be a neat item.

Classic head half cents are appealing, and a very nice coin could be found for $200 if you have patience in searching.

20c coins never are a bad thing.

    The list goes on................

If you don't have one, 1942-P War Nickel in PR-66 or very choice PR-65. It's a one year Proof type coin with a mintage of 27,600 pieces. A great many of those coins have mess up because people have played with them though the years to make 'em shiney.

I think that it's an underrrated type coin among the moderns.

    Jeremy,

Since you like early US coins, a nice VF30 draped bust half cent 1800-1808, is your most inexpensive entry into draped bust coins. I bought one 12 years ago for $75 that sparked my interest into early bust coinage. Another suggestion would be a VG 1806 half dollar, but this would be tougher to find.

An 1804 half cent would be really cool. The circulated coins from this era have a lot of character, they have completed their tour in commerce in a time when our country was young, have been used by the early pioneers of the United States. Each die variety represents a limited edition of the artisty of the early US mint engravers.

The XF Trade Dollar is a good suggestion, but you may even be able to find a nice AU for $200. Also, very attractive AU Bust Half Dollars and early Half Cents can be found for under $200.

do you have a draped bust half dollar yet? It's a nice big old silver coin and an excellent value.
You may have to stretch a little past $200 but not much, for a decent VG or so coin
(although I myself like coins with more detail and "net" grades of VG or Fine.)

the 1806 is a popular choice as a type coin, and comes round and pointed top "6" as well as
"no stem" and "with stem" varieties

Edit: Also notice the different shapes of Liberty's mouth on the different dies, is she smirking on that first one? image

  • my two cents: a nice 1773 Virginia Halfpenny. It's a U. S Colonial that was actually struck DURING the colonial period, AND it's the only official coin struck by Britain for use in the American Colonies!

And by the way, everyone else's suggestions are worthless and without merit.

Late to the party, but a Trade dollar would be a great type coin.

How about a high grade circulated Type One Standing quarter? Or a Proof Mercury dime? Or a high grade circulated Bust, Seated, or Barber half?

Jeremy: How about an AU Capped Bust Half Dollar? I've always felt that this series is undervalued in XF-AU condition, and they are pretty (and old) classic type coins...

  • Lots of neat coins in that range. Among older circ. coins, you might think about:

    XF Trade Dollar
    XF Double Dime
    VF Draped Bust 1/2 cent
    XF Barber Half
    VF No Stars Half Dime
    F No Stars Dime
    XF Capped Bust Half Dime
1/5 of a PCGS PR 01 Ike Dollar

Carefull with the trade dollars, they are very addicting. Never thought I'd own two in MS, but a little time and looking turned them up for just a tad more that your max. Lots of bang for the buck on that series. IMO
