How many old style "rattler" PCGS slabs do you have?

I was wondering what keeps the coins secure inside the slabs. From this post I asume that the older ones let the coins rattle around. This sounds like bad news to me. What is used to keep them centered today? I noticed the NGC holders appear to have something surrounding the coin, what does PCGS do?

Zero and glad of it. They are ugly and from past experience the coins that are left in these are not so hot either. The old green slabs, thats a different story.

Unfortunately, I think PCGS actually graded this one up a bit. The reverse is nice, but Liberty is hacking like she's got TB on the obverse. Even though the ticks on her face don't show up near as rough in person, I've seen prettier MS60s.

Had only one rattler and I had the coin upgraded one point and it made Cameo status.

While I dont like the rattler holder, I love the coins in them.

Weiss - Yeah, that`s a " rattler ". I have 5. All common date Morgans and all graded MS63 ( correctly graded at that ).

Never owned one, but I have quite a few Green Holder coins, and I prefer these over the newer blue ones, looks better, and there's more insurance that the coin won't turn in the holder... hopefully... or that if it will turn, it's already done so... like I saw one Green Holder 66 Merc that had a huge print on the back that probally showed up after slabbing...

I buy coins and I sell them. On a couple of occasions I have taken rattler slabs to PCGS at a major show and had the coins reholdered. If it's a cheap coin I'll sell it as is. As for my collection I've cracked every one I owned either because the coin rattled and I hated it, or I thought the coin would upgrade, which they all did.

My biggest PCGS submission ocurred during a period with PCGS was ultra conservative. It worked out OK because I was able to trade in one of the coins on 1794 half dime, which is now one my favorite coins.

Having read this don't assume that all "rattlers" are upgradable. They're not. There was a time during the rattle age when the standards got lax too.

Bottleline: There is no substitute for knowing how to grade. In the world NGC there is a rough equivilient. Many NGC holders that have gold embossed brand markings on the back are ungradable too.

I have about 5 rattlers. I actually "like" them because they seem somewhat historic. Plus I know the coin in them hasn't been touched by a coin doctor in recent years.

STOP! Don't say they upgraded even ONE more time. My most regretted coin sale was in a rattler.

A coin I promised to keep til the grave. I got greedy. And greed is bad. I betcha I sold a 1871 COMPLETELY PROOFLIKE....DEEP MIRROR.....BUSINESS STRIKE.......65 for the 64 money. The guy who bought it was too eager to pay double bid.

I see that coin in my sleep.

I still have ONE coin in a rattler. Out of my type set. So was the 1871.

I went nuts in the 80's and bought just about every 66 Merc and Frankie I could find. I wish I had run across some 67's back then but can't remember seeing many (if any at all). I remember thinking NGC Mercs and Frankies were over graded back then but I liked the grading on PCGS holders. I must have about 75 of the rattler type in total. One day I will really look them all over to see if any are candidates for a crack out.

I have around 5 left. I had two more but I cracked them. One was an 1871 PF62 dime. The grade was correct but there was a large, light fingerprint on the reverse. I removed it and got it reholdered as a PF62.

Well if the picture of Weiss coin is in a rattler then I have four. I had to find all four. and the last one did rattle. Might it be that the larger coins rattle more than the smaller.

I have eight, six of them are Morgans in my #1 set. I don't care for the holders, but for the most part, you usually can find really nice coins in them.

I don't really trust them for protection of my coins, so at some point I will crack two of the Morgans out that I think can upgrade, and reholder the other four that I am sure won't upgrade.

Too many of those, can't stand the rattling noise. My nieces looks for them and wants to use them as their back up rattler. Good for nothing slabs, all undegraded coins and I assume PCGS wants them all back for reassignment eventually!
