A question about your thoughts regarding private messages vs. emails...

I notice that, as obsessive as I am about trying to reply to emails in a timely manner, I am usually even more so, with respect to replying to private messages I receive from other forum members. Sometimes, as an exercise in discipline, I literally make myself wait to reply. image

Part of it might be the awareness that the sender is on line and might know that I am too, but I don't think that's the only reason. It just seems more personal when messages are received through this forum. So, I usually try to reply quickly, to any questions (and most comments) I receive.

I'm wondering, do you folks treat private messages the same as emails or are you more likely to reply sooner? Later? Not at all?image

  • I tend to answer Personal messages as soon as I can also, because I always fear that I'll forget about them, and it's simple, as if I'm on the forum, I can write a reply as easily as I would a post :-)

Because of viruses emails have started to become a pain in the butt. I’ve really gotten paranoid over attachments. image

If I know the sender, I prefer emails because I can send pictures and do more things. I always answer the PMs I get here, and for some people, who are not customers, they are fine. But if I have a business relationship with someone, I prefer emails.

If I'm online I try respond to either within minutes.

I generally try to respond to PMs ASAP. Both because I don't want to forget about them, and because I would want someone to get back to me quickly. It bothers me to know I have PM sitting here that I haven't answered!

I generally answer my email this way too. Within a few minutes if I'm online at the time it arrives. My emails almost never go much more than 12 hours unanswered.
  • I try to respond quickly. And if the PM doesn't require some kind of answer, I try to send something to indicate I received it anyway.

It's an odd feeling sending a PM to members you are less well aquainted with... and then not receive a response. It leaves the mind vulnerable to all sorts of scenarios--most of them not good--and probably not based in reality.

PM's tend to be more urgent for me. Of course, I do not get a whole heck of a lot of email from board members. PM's seem to be a "real-time" converstion, IMHO

  • I've been on the BST board and some of the members have PMed me. I sense that they are getting a little upset that I don't respond. I would if I knew where I am suppose to view my PMs at. I've looked at my emails but nothing and I've checked my profile ... still nothing. Any help would be appreciated!!

    Thanks

  • When online I always respond to PM's as they arrive..or if there are 2-3, as quick as possible between threads.

If I'm online I'll try to reply very quickly. I sort of view it as a face to face conversation. Additionally, I assume it's not spam e-mail and due my attention.

I don't respond to PM's unless a response is indicated (which is typical) and then try
to respond immediately. If I'm beyond pg 2 on any forum at the time I usually wait until
I'm back on page 1 because you can't get back to the page you were on directly.

The only thing wrong with net-0 is that they spam their customers' e-mail so much it's
almost worthless, so I avoid all e-mail.

I have to chuckle at the question, in two years I have blocked one person from PM's and had only one person not respond to one of my PM's, one who claims they always respond to PM'simage. Anyone else had to block someone? My emails might languish for a day or to because I don't open my email every day but I always answer PM's promptly.

I usually answer PM's as soon as I get them or I will forget them.

I rarely get emails from board members, except the ones that cannot send/recieve PM's.

KoolCoin, you should see an image of a small lock and either "no new messages" or "X number new messages" in the upper left hand corner of your screen. If you click on that, you should be in business. If you need additional help, let us know.

I have only had a single PM in all my time here that I considered to be attacking and over the top. I think that's a pretty good run.

I didn't block that person. In that case I just didn't answer.

  • Coinguy1,

Thank you very much!! It works and I answered all of my PMs.

  • I try to answer PM's as soon as possible. I have had a couple of them not answered, but have not seen a need to block anyone. Emails may take a little longer, unless they relate to a coin transaction.image

    Mark,

I prefer PMs to E-Mail, because I know a PM is not spam. Unfortunately, 90% of my E-Mail is spam, and sometimes I may miss an important E-Mail because I am deleting so much junk.

If someone wants to send me an E-Mail, as long as I get a "heads-up" and expect it, then there is no problem.

  • People can get my email address from my profile or from my web sites, but I can't post it in the boards... image My email address is very simple, so simple in fact, I actually like showing it off... image According to the board's automated rules, my last name is a prohibited word (the last 4 letters), and my last name is my domain name.

I tend to answer PMs quicker than emails if I'm in the boards because I don't check my email as often while I'm here. I view PMs kind of like being at a social event talking with people, and I view checking my email while in the boards like stepping away to phone home for voicemail...

    Just my two cents... image

  • I try to answer PM as fast as I get them. Email you may have to wait a day or two. I don't always have a chance to check my email. I do get a fair amount.

I think of PM's as a personal message. My problem is that I forget to look in the corner of the screen. Must be getting old.

  • I answer my PM's just as soon as I see I have one, and answer my personal e-mail the same way.

  • PM...a.s.a.p. Emails... that depends! If I'm on here with folks, and at the same time my auctions are ending at The Bay, of course I'm answering those a.s.a.p..and not disregarding PMs... Money! Money! Money! or Messages! Messages! Messages! Not a tough choice!...image

I tend to treat PMs as IMs when I'm online and try to reply quickly. However, if someone PMs me when I'm not on then I will take my time to get back.
  • Fortunely, I never had any that where abusive. Maybe heated but, nothing abusive and hopfully the other people can say the same about me. I PM, when it`s approprite, as soon as possible even sometimes just as an aknowledgement that I got there message or in reference to something said in a thread.
