That D/D Dahlonega up there earlier in the thread, is a really cool repunch!!! That's really interesting! Quick question... what is the cheapest that extremely low grade Dahlonega gold goes for?
I love it all! Right now i have no early gold I hope to have some soon. I have to find the combo to my safe before I buy any though, its been 3 months since I have seen my coins.
Hehe, gold is awesome. Way cool! If you go to some of the fancy restaurants in japan they actually serve you some fancy chocolate deserts covered in thin gold flakes ! (What a waste of gold ..)
I agree with you on Early gold, Proof gold. I don't know what CC gold is (I assume you mean the mint park "CC", I'm not sure what you mean by D & C gold either). I like any gold, really. Even commerative gold, (although I hate commerative coins).
I just recently bought an ancient gold coin and recieved it in the mail today. a 7mm (supposivly the smallest gold coin in the world) indian gold fanam. Here's the specs:
TamilNadu-Gangee, Raja Ram 1690-98AD, .38gr., 16 karats to 20 karats, 7mm, Obv- Tanjore Kali Fig., Rev- "Ra Mu/Ra U" Ref. Ganesh, Tamilnadu, #11.2.
The fanam is very brassy in colour. I guess its because the people who made it used a low karat.
The 79-O story? It's Seth's story, but I will retell it to the best of my ability:
Seth was working at a coin store in (?) Jacksonville when he was a teenager (?), when an "old lady" walked in with usual of assortment of Morgans and $20 Libs, but in the group of $20 Libs was an 1879-O $20 in original/PQ AU. She ended up walking out of the store with it and never returned. I ask Seth every now and then whatever happenned to it.
Please post the article on this thread when you are finished with it. And how the heck are you going to do research on the Charlotte Mint from the Netherlands?
Being a 12 year old YN, I don't have much gold. Here's a picture of my only pre-modern gold coin - a 1851-O $2.50 with a repunched date. I believe that it's Breen 6214.
Just thought I would post an updated photo of my Dahlonega $3. I need an opinion of the forum from the Dahlnonega experts. Since I haven't seen a whole lot of $3 Dahlonega's, how would the forum rate the strike of the coin below?
No Proofs or CC gold coins for me. The Proof coins are just too expensive in decent condition, and the CC coins have never gotten my heart to pitter-patter. However I do have a few coins from the other categories ...
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
Mr Commem Re. your 54-D $3 as best I can assess it by image... Strike is excellent with full denticles I can only remember two better and one of these is off the market [Bass coin] Surface appears only very lightly abraded...top 25% 'Wear' only slight probably an old time 55 range today possibly 58 Luster intact for high grade AU far above average [since so many have been repeatedly dipped] Coloration very good although there are about 8-12 [estimated] that still exist with gorgeous coloration Therefor my best assessment probably would grade PCGS 55/58 but in the top 10 - 15% for grade and would bring a very strong premium compared to the typical specimen. How close am I? One day I hope to have the privilege of seeing this coin. Did you know all 1120 Dahlonega threes were struck on the same day... off the top of my head July? 1854

Sorry about the 1808 $5. There are many more out there.
What, may I ask, is the story behind the 79-O Gold? These historical types of stories captivate me. Anyone care to fill me in?

I think that your coin looks pretty choice. It is very well struck which is a pet peeve of mine. I would say you have quite a coin.
