P.S. I like 'em too...now, whatever happenned to that 1879-O $20?
I'm sure the old hag still has it. Remember its in a PCGS 1st gen holder AU50. That means MS62 today! It really was a nice coin, little frost, semi-pl.
As far as proof gold, I do not have any and doubt I ever will. That stuff is too expensive!
I haven't been able to afford any Liteside proof gold yet, but I did get my first piece of (non-modern) Darkside proof gold recently...

Watch the auctions, esp. B&M. They often have F-VF C and D mint coins for sale. I just picked this 50-C (weak C) $5 NGC-30 from the recent ANR auction for a song (and a dance):
I LOVE proof gold. Only have the one piece but more would be nice !!!!

Unlikely to find branch mint gold on Home Shopping Network
Difficult for the telemarketers to promote to collectors who respect originality
Almost certain to stimulate a desire to learn more about a neglected area of American history
Motley but interesting and gentlemanly group of collectors as a whole
Coins value may fluctuate but pays dividend of enjoyment without fail often even when passed to the next generation
Coins even appear to have a soothing effect on the pysche slabbed or no [all gold]
Prediction TDN appears to be evolving to a higher level, not necessarily more expensive just to a new level of enjoyment. Can't remember the word used on Calvin and Hobbes to describe the process... transmogrify???
It's hard for me to believe that C & D gold is considered modern (by US standards). What cut-off date are you using?
"Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you." -Luke 11:9
"Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might." -Deut. 6:4-5
"For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king; He will save us." -Isaiah 33:22

Here is my new coin purchase from Doug Winter:
From Baltimore to Dallas to my house on Wednesday.
Wanted the San Francisco half eagle from the year before this, but found the price prohibitive
Even from this, the 2nd year of SF operation, the $5 is very difficult to locate.
dig those slanty fives!

Nice coin, BTW, Baley...any story behind it?

RYK really like that 57-C G$5 and the 55-S G$5 is a super coin.
Will see if FC-57 can tutor me and get a few pictures up...
I'll post this one again just so I'm on the sheet.

I thought we had to keep posting!!
C'mon RYK, Seth, Baley, others, lets get as much gold on this thread as possible...
If this is going to be a history thread, post what you got... one coin at a time. Add when you buy new...
I'm pretty sure I will be the first to run out...

An 1861D Half Eagle - don't see too many of these in the junk pile:
But that's the junky one - the pride and joy of the collection (one of them anyway) is the icon coin, which unfortunately I Only have in Icon version - I'll have to work on that if someone would really like to see it up close and personal:
And last - but certainly not least - a little CC action

It is the finest known 48-D/D $5, apparently unique in mint state. Many people do not include it in the basic Dahlonega $5 set, despite that the 46-D/D $5 is included.

Nothing too exciting, no mintmark, but...
a numismatic wrong made right.
Grading early US gold
Happy New Year, gold collectors!
Here's a less than Platinum Night Dahlonega

I only have 1 early date. I think it would be supercool to have the set of 7 half eagles, 1 from each mint. Think how cool the reverses would look displayed in a nice capital holder.

OK, thanks for giving me one more reason to post a pic of my baby, bought in May of this year. I hope ya'll aren't tired of seeing me show this coin over and over again!
