in your collection what is your favorite coin?

I have bunches of them but my favorite today is a cleaned 00S barber quarter with a cool die crack, but I'm going to the coin shop tomorrow so who knows what it will be tomorrow night.

what I'm looking for is a VF+ Barber or standing liberty quarter I can submit for my registry set.
I won't be to unhappy to find a nice VF/XF Barber half for affordable money.

My favorite is a coin is one my mom found when she was a child.
It's a 1913 2 1/2 Indian Gold Dollar. She found in a purse and kept it until I started collecting.
She gave it to me when I was a youngin. Priceless-- Everything else could be sold but
that one will never leave the family.
One day I'm going to post a pic and ask for opinions on a grade. Looks good for a gold piece,
but what do i know about grading.

Man, that's a hard one. I can really appriciate a tough coin, particularly when they're nice. If I narrowed it down to my favorite coin to look at, and totally ignore the difficulty factor.... Here it is:

    Tough call.

I once had a very nice bag of 82-P quarters. None of the coins were the typical
poor strike for the date. The bag was lightly handled so even the lesser coins
were not marked much. There was one run of about 250 very well struck coins
from a pretty new die pair. One of these 250 stood out as cleaner and better
struck than the others. It now fills that hole in my collection. The fact that I found
it myself makes me treasure it that much more.

I don't have one specific one but my PCGS G6 1798/7 Large cent is up there.
  • I hate answering this question because I still can't post pic's. image, but it is my favorite barber coin, an 1892 S barber half that I would grade 66 and pcgs agrees with me. I've never personally seen a better example of this date then mine because The Doc. with the only 67 won't post a pic. of it. "I think he's chicken"

Back in 1972 I used to check all my pocket change with a 10X. Found this coin and knowing that the '72 DD's
had recently been found, was put in touch with "Lonesome" John Devine the error specialist. He said " Yeah,
I've got a picture of that coin on my wall". I thought, well it can't be that rare so I travelled up the coast and showed him
and was horrified to learn that at that time the Secret Service was still investigating this coin as a possible
counterfeit. I was only 15 at the time and did not like the promise of making lisence plates for years to come.
There was a lot of pressure back then to unload the coin since the investigation seemed to not be going
our way. So......, I (stupid, stupid, stupid) sold the coin for $350 to Natalie Halpern of Buffalo. It was one of life's lessons
but I have more fond memories of my error collecting days in spite of my youthful naivete. These forums are very
nteresting and I'm glad the hobby is still thriving. Oh, the '69 did have some very noticable bag marks
but grading back then was pretty hit and miss back then. Keep on rockin'!

My favorite has got to be my icon, an 1879 quarter that I purchased raw in 1971 for $95. Blazing luster and light gorgeous toning. I had it slabbed in '88/'89, and it was graded as MS65. A larger picture can be seen in my type set. I have a newer digital camera that produces better images, but haven't had a chance to pull this coin out of the safe deposit box to be rephotographed.

My second Barber half when I started my VF/XF set. It is a more common date, but just brings back so many good memories of those early days collecting when walking into a coin store would get my heart racing like I was about to discover great treasures.

    image

At the time I thought the coin was too dark and I was reluctant to buy it. I spent $85.00 for it and walked out of the coin shop flabbergasted that I had actually just spent $85.00 on a COIN!

Good hell, what would my wife think if she knew? Three years later and having seen some ten thousand or so Barber Halves I would mortgage my house and buy every half dollar that had this same look and toning.

  • Also found in the same hole as the 1901-O quarter listed earlier. That was a great day!

Hard to pick a favorite. It seems to change from day to day.Heres one that I really like alot. It's a fully PL 1903 Morgan. No contrast, as there never is with this date, but an extremely attractive example thats pretty tough to locate in nice PL condition. This one is very conservatively graded at 64PL by PCGS.

    Oh, well.

(Hey, even you Litesiders have to admit, a big, huge 445-year-old chunk o' silver is cool!)
