Are there any REAL numismatists on these boards?
At some point, a collector (or dealer) becomes serious enough about coins to be called a "numismatist". Do you think that you qualify? Why?

A dealer or collector who specializes in a series and not only can grade the series but knows all the varieties, knows the typical strike for each date in the series and the typical look for each date "how they come"
just a guess- Les
Collecting is fun for me because of the people as much as the coins. mdwoods
We'll use our hands and hearts and if we must we'll use our heads.
That's what I'm trying to do!

So, to refer to ones self as a numismatist seems a bit egotistical even if one were so possessed.
I or course, have avoided things like that.

It defines it as someone who collects and studies money (coins in particular)...

Dragon, I believe that makes you an EXPERT numismatist!
Do less expert collectors count?

I know a lot of you probably have guitars and pianos around the house and maybe play a little. Are you musicians? I would say yes.
Are you professional musicians? Probably no.
I collect and read and study about coins. I even trade them. Am I a numismatist? Probably yes. Am I a professional numismatist? No. Am I a skilled numismatist? Again, no.

1) I own a vast coin collection that I have formed in 26 years(I'm 31 now, yes I started at 5 with the Whitman folders)
2) I have a microscope to STUDY coins.
3) I ask a gazillion questions to people that smarter than me.
4) I worked in a coin store from ages 12 to 18......thereby greatly enhancing my brain as a numismatist.
5) I read about and try to meet great numismatists.
6) Last but not least........I'm a member of these boards!

Perhaps not. But at least I'm clad.

Come on over ... to The Dark Side!
A numismatist is one who "examines and studies coins, banknotes, medals, tokens and primitive forms of money. One need not be a collector or own a coin to be a numismatist". It goes on to say that a investor is not a numismatist. I've met plenty of dealers who aren't.
My current project is studying the die progression of the 1856 FE cent, S3 die pair, and why some are MS, others proof. If you have a speciman, send it to me!
"The silver is mine and the gold is mine,' declares the LORD GOD Almighty."
Completely surprised at some of the perceptions of what a numismatist is. Never would have expected such, well, confusion, over what constitutes a numismatist.
I guess, if you don't know what it is, you probably aren't one. Hard to imagine a numismatist, who wouldn't know they qualify as a numismatist, particularly since, a certain amount of actual study is what distinguishes one as a numismatist.
You are into head and word games:-) Never the less a great contributor to this forum.
I consider myself a numismatist.
I am a student of coins.
I am committed to enhancing my knowledge on the discipline through individual discovery, discusions with other of similar interest, and perusal of texts, monographs, catalogues and online information.
My level of expertice does not define my numismatic identity nor your exceptional knowledge your numismatic identity. You were a numismatist before becoming so expert in your field.
I have a few series I've studied, collected, and understood. In general if a numismatist is also someone who encourages others to understand coins, then I qualify there - I'm interacting with my family and folks I know getting them interested in their understanding of coins and money in general.
I'm a babe in the woods compared to most on this forum, so I don't know if I get to share that often, but I try.
I can say that I do know more than the most avg. Bears, except for one forum resident Bear, who is also humble and lovable!

Professional numismatists earn their primary income from numismatics.
I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

I am, because my wife says it's so. Not only am I a numismatist, but she has added some additional scholarly appellations to the title:
