Are there any REAL numismatists on these boards?

MrEurekaMrEureka Posts: 24,333 ✭✭✭✭✭
At some point, a collector (or dealer) becomes serious enough about coins to be called a "numismatist". Do you think that you qualify? Why?

As one who loves and appreciates coins as art I qualify. As someone who knows every little nuance about every series, I still need another thirty years.

    What is a numismatist???

A dealer or collector who specializes in a series and not only can grade the series but knows all the varieties, knows the typical strike for each date in the series and the typical look for each date "how they come"

    just a guess- Les

I'm still an apprentice too. I talk about coins to whomever I can. I don't care what series they collect. I want to know about it.

Yes there are such people on this board. I would consider myself one with wheat Lincoln cents and to a lesser degree Jefferson's.

While some might consider me a numismatist because i study coins, the label seemingly carries with it a certain implied level of knowledge.

So, to refer to ones self as a numismatist seems a bit egotistical even if one were so possessed.

I or course, have avoided things like that.

  • According to Webster, most of us are numismatists...
It defines it as someone who collects and studies money (coins in particular)...

Dragon, I believe that makes you an EXPERT numismatist!

    Do less expert collectors count?

Let's see, last night I went to bed and read about a series of coins I collect. Hmmmmmm... tough question.

I know a lot of you probably have guitars and pianos around the house and maybe play a little. Are you musicians? I would say yes.
Are you professional musicians? Probably no.

I collect and read and study about coins. I even trade them. Am I a numismatist? Probably yes. Am I a professional numismatist? No. Am I a skilled numismatist? Again, no.

    Here goes......

    1) I own a vast coin collection that I have formed in 26 years(I'm 31 now, yes I started at 5 with the Whitman folders)

    2) I have a microscope to STUDY coins.

    3) I ask a gazillion questions to people that smarter than me.

    4) I worked in a coin store from ages 12 to 18......thereby greatly enhancing my brain as a numismatist.

    5) I read about and try to meet great numismatists.

    6) Last but not least........I'm a member of these boards!

I am, according to the numismatic dictionary.

A numismatist is one who "examines and studies coins, banknotes, medals, tokens and primitive forms of money. One need not be a collector or own a coin to be a numismatist". It goes on to say that a investor is not a numismatist. I've met plenty of dealers who aren't.

My current project is studying the die progression of the 1856 FE cent, S3 die pair, and why some are MS, others proof. If you have a speciman, send it to me!

Hmmm, I enjoy reading all I can about as many series of coins from the Lovejoy collection of dimes to Snow and the flying eagle cents to MrEureka/Cassell/Pollack and the patterns, etc.,etc. I think that might make too much of a generalist and not enough of a specialist. But does one need to be a specialist to be a numismatist? I dare say........... NO!

I have invested quite a bit of time and effort into collecting, studying and improving my knowledge of "US Coins" so I believe I fit the "REAL" definition of a numismatist.

Completely surprised at some of the perceptions of what a numismatist is. Never would have expected such, well, confusion, over what constitutes a numismatist.

I guess, if you don't know what it is, you probably aren't one. Hard to imagine a numismatist, who wouldn't know they qualify as a numismatist, particularly since, a certain amount of actual study is what distinguishes one as a numismatist.

    Andy,
You are into head and word games:-) Never the less a great contributor to this forum.
    I consider myself a numismatist.
I am a student of coins.
I am committed to enhancing my knowledge on the discipline through individual discovery, discusions with other of similar interest, and perusal of texts, monographs, catalogues and online information.
My level of expertice does not define my numismatic identity nor your exceptional knowledge your numismatic identity. You were a numismatist before becoming so expert in your field.

  • I am very much a novice.

I have a few series I've studied, collected, and understood. In general if a numismatist is also someone who encourages others to understand coins, then I qualify there - I'm interacting with my family and folks I know getting them interested in their understanding of coins and money in general.

I'm a babe in the woods compared to most on this forum, so I don't know if I get to share that often, but I try.

Yes, I'm a numismatist. I have written and published articles on a variety of subjects, and the last time I spoke to a club, the numismatist who introduced me, whom I view as a numismatist in turn, give me that title in his introduction.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I don't know..I'm a specialist collector. find a coin I love, then build a set. I don't have an extremely broad knowledge of a lot of series, so I would hesitate to call myself a numismatist.

I think that I am. I try to contribute to numismatic publications (not as often as I wish, but somewhat consistently). Anyone willing to do research and write an article about 73-CC Trade Dollar die combinations is a little nuts and probably a numismatist.

  • I consider myself a numismatist because I spend time every day studying coins.

As a student I have lots to learn. That is one of the things I enjoy about working with coins, there is something new I can learn every day.

I think that most of the participants here would qualify as numismatists.

Professional numismatists earn their primary income from numismatics.

I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.
