1803 One Cent SEGS to PCGS. . will it grade?

I'm thinking about this coin very, very hard. I know ZIP about SEGS so my question is if I manage to snag this coin from "early-cents" and break it out of the SEGS holder, do you think PCGS will give a similar grade?

Are you sure PCGS wouldn't cut this coin some slack? For a 200 year old coin, I think it looks pretty good

If slabs are not critical to you buy a raw one and save.
In general avoid non PCGS & NGC coins and you will save the heartache years later.
Well, I agree with Cameron on the PCGS bodybag, but if you like it, who cares.

<< <i>PCGS bodybag for sure. Save the grading fee.

I believe there is nothing wrong with ANACS if your buying type coins. You can get some real steals because few people search for anacs on ebay. My signature coin is ANACS MS63 and I would almost guarantee it would upgrade to at least a MS64 if I tried.

Yuck!
You know, raw is ok, but in today's market, if you go to resell that coin you will fetch much better money if the coin is slabbed, as opposed to raw, so whether or not pcgs slabs the coin is a relevant question. If your plan is to hold on to the coin till your 10' under, than it doesn't matter.

Heaven forbid, what is the world coming to?
Is there no mercy, no redemption for a 200 year old, very attractive coin that doesn't meet a bunch of artificial standards!
Give me a break! What is the coin world coming to?
Aaa..rrr....gggg...hhhhhh! A 1933 Gold $20 coin with a broken leg and a banged up knee, grossly overgraded, sneezed on and probably cleaned by a degenerate, grossly overweight(fat), dead king is worth $7.5M, but a 200 year old real piece of history is junk? Maybe its time to find a new hobby.
But its OK to bow down and pray to; pay homage to, a bunch of weirdly toned Christmas cookies that probably got their color after coming out of a New Jersey baker's oven?
I agree, just because it won't grade, doesn't make it a BAD coin.

I've seen minor corrosion on Unc. copper type slabbed by PCGS. But this coin has retoned very badly. Try and find an image of one of these that hasn't been treated so harshly, compare the two and see what you think.

As always, I appreciate everyones time and input. I think I'm going to go for it, send it to PCGS and if they stick their noses up at it, I'll send to ANACS (heaven forbid).
I'd have to say that since I'm not an experienced grader, slabs are important to me. It gives me something that my insurance company can't refute should something happen.
Is it possible to buy the books that graders use (if thats what they use) to compare what you have to what it should look like? I find myself always searching for high resolution pictures of "perfect" coins. What would be really nice is a book with huge picures illustrating various grades and toning. I'm sure they must exist. . .

<< <i> The whole point of the thread was if PCGS would bodybag it. I said yes because of the corrosion. I would love to give the 200 year old coin some slack, but then that would be misleading him and may be a dissapointment in a few month when the coin comes back in a bodybag. >>
If he just wants to put the coin in a PCGS slab, then I agree with you, and your advice is right on. If he is more concerned about the coin , then I don't think he should dismiss it. However, I am not an early copper expert, so I must preface all I have said with "listen to the experts".
Just from looking at the coin, I think it is pretty and would love to own it, but if there is significant rim damage, or if it is being primarily purchased for investment, then I agree with what the others have said. But, I still feel sorry for this coin.
<< <i>Im with you Pushkin I like it >>
Thanks kid - I'm glad somebody doesn't think I'm just a raving maniac, candidate for the looney bin (not the Can $ barrel), or a total, off-the-wall nim-com-poop!
I'd be proud to own that coin - but I suppose it isn't "flawless".
As for a PCGS slab, maybe not, but once a blue moon (not with caps and looking at a book), "PCGs" (with all due respect) be darned!"
