1803 One Cent SEGS to PCGS. . will it grade?

I'm thinking about this coin very, very hard. I know ZIP about SEGS so my question is if I manage to snag this coin from "early-cents" and break it out of the SEGS holder, do you think PCGS will give a similar grade?

  • PCGS bodybag. SEGS even put "micro corrosion". You will never get it into a PCGS slab with that and the "off" color if the scan is true to this coin.

  • Off color? I kinda thought it was a RB (and a cool RB at that). . . .Maybe my monitor needs some calibration.

Are you sure PCGS wouldn't cut this coin some slack? For a 200 year old coin, I think it looks pretty good image

my gut reaction is: "who cares". its a TWO-HUNDRED YEAR OLD COIN. so what if pcgs says you can't collect it (by bb-ing it)? do you like it? if you do, then ENJOY it. don't worry about what someone else thinks.

  • PCGS bodybag for sure. Save the grading fee.

If slabs are not critical to you buy a raw one and save.

In general avoid non PCGS & NGC coins and you will save the heartache years later.

    I agree with dorkkarl.

Well, I agree with Cameron on the PCGS bodybag, but if you like it, who cares.

I believe there is nothing wrong with ANACS if your buying type coins. You can get some real steals because few people search for anacs on ebay. My signature coin is ANACS MS63 and I would almost guarantee it would upgrade to at least a MS64 if I tried.

  • It will cross, maybe not at AU but its 200 yrs old and these coins get some slack. Even if it has minor corrosion PCGS will grade it.

My guess is that they very well might put a net grade on it due to its age.

Nice coin!! PCGS will bodybag it but with a coin like this, who cares? Besides, be prepared to pay gobs more money for the PCGS slabbed version, and it will most likely not be as eye-appealing as this one.

    It looks cleaned and retoned.

I think Greg's right on. Cleaned and retoned. Even if the corrosion wasn't there, it probably wouldn't slab.
You know, raw is ok, but in today's market, if you go to resell that coin you will fetch much better money if the coin is slabbed, as opposed to raw, so whether or not pcgs slabs the coin is a relevant question. If your plan is to hold on to the coin till your 10' under, than it doesn't matter.

    Bodybag, mocro-corrosion, cleaned, retoned !!!!!

Heaven forbid, what is the world coming to?image It looks like a very attractive 200 year old coin and some on this board are making it sound worse that smallpox, the Black Death, and nuclear warfare all rolled into one. That poor coin should probably be thrown into the depths of the ocean for lacking perfection.imageimageimageimage

Is there no mercy, no redemption for a 200 year old, very attractive coin that doesn't meet a bunch of artificial standards!image

Give me a break! What is the coin world coming to?imageIF YOU LIKE THE COIN, BUY IT, although after all the negativity here, apparently only perfection has any value anymore. Heaven forbid, NONE OF US WILL LOOK AS GOOD AS THAT COIN IN 200 YEARS!!!.

Aaa..rrr....gggg...hhhhhh! A 1933 Gold $20 coin with a broken leg and a banged up knee, grossly overgraded, sneezed on and probably cleaned by a degenerate, grossly overweight(fat), dead king is worth $7.5M, but a 200 year old real piece of history is junk? Maybe its time to find a new hobby. imageimageimageimage

But its OK to bow down and pray to; pay homage to, a bunch of weirdly toned Christmas cookies that probably got their color after coming out of a New Jersey baker's oven?image

You find that splotchy look attractive Pushkin? C'mon. It's not a bad coin. The initial question was, "will it grade?"
I agree, just because it won't grade, doesn't make it a BAD coin.

Agree w the other naysayers. The color on this coin is not attractive to me, and I wouldn't buy it, period. In terms of detail, AU seems to be right. There is a reason why you may be able to pick it up for a mere fraction of Sheet pricing.

I've seen minor corrosion on Unc. copper type slabbed by PCGS. But this coin has retoned very badly. Try and find an image of one of these that hasn't been treated so harshly, compare the two and see what you think.

    "Vou invadir o Nordeste,
    "Seu cabra da peste,
    "Sou Mangueira......."
  • Well, at least Pushkin thinks it's pretty image

As always, I appreciate everyones time and input. I think I'm going to go for it, send it to PCGS and if they stick their noses up at it, I'll send to ANACS (heaven forbid).

I'd have to say that since I'm not an experienced grader, slabs are important to me. It gives me something that my insurance company can't refute should something happen.

Is it possible to buy the books that graders use (if thats what they use) to compare what you have to what it should look like? I find myself always searching for high resolution pictures of "perfect" coins. What would be really nice is a book with huge picures illustrating various grades and toning. I'm sure they must exist. . .
  • The whole point of the thread was if PCGS would bodybag it. I said yes because of the corrosion. I would love to give the 200 year old coin some slack, but then that would be misleading him and may be a dissapointment in a few month when the coin comes back in a bodybag.

    Cameron Kiefer
  • If there is significant Rim Damage PCGS will not grade it. You cannot see the rims...When you break it out it's too late.

If he just wants to put the coin in a PCGS slab, then I agree with you, and your advice is right on. If he is more concerned about the coin , then I don't think he should dismiss it. However, I am not an early copper expert, so I must preface all I have said with "listen to the experts". image

Just from looking at the coin, I think it is pretty and would love to own it, but if there is significant rim damage, or if it is being primarily purchased for investment, then I agree with what the others have said. But, I still feel sorry for this coin.image
  • Im with you Pushkin I like it, look through Legends inventory and there is a bunch that have this kind of thick colorful toning. I like it its like a lower grade affordable version of theirs. I dont think it was very nice to all pounce on this coin i mean how would u feel if u just bought a coin and half the forum saays its ugly. I in fact like the toning Link to Legend coins with similar toning.

Thanks kid - I'm glad somebody doesn't think I'm just a raving maniac, candidate for the looney bin (not the Can $ barrel), or a total, off-the-wall nim-com-poop!image (even though my wife, sons, and even the cat do).
I'd be proud to own that coin - but I suppose it isn't "flawless". image

As for a PCGS slab, maybe not, but once a blue moon (not with caps and looking at a book), "PCGs" (with all due respect) be darned!"
