Russ!
Why? Here is a person who came onto these boards as at Newbe (at least the way I read it). He decided he was going to go after Proof JFK's. He bought slabbed coins, raw coins, raw proof sets etc until ....
He put together a top registry set of these coins... but that is not the whole story.
To learn the grading aspect, he decided to send coins to PCGS to test his skills. He was told that sometimes PCGS is no different than sending to a blind man, but he persisted (hey, you have to be able to grade for the market) He was ridiculed for sending in coins that everyone knew did not warrent the grading fee (including him) but wanted to know for sure.
Now look at the input he has given to these boards in respect to this series. His latest was the "doctored" coin thread. He has been a tremendous force to these boards, and shows an incredible amount of energy towards collecting. I only hope I can follow his lead in collecting my series. He has had threads trying to determine how many JFK's he has. A true accomplishment.
Russ, I truly believe that many will follow my lead in saying you have been a tremendous asset to this board, and to collecting coins in general.
I say "Thank You" Hope to meet you in Portland in 2004 when the ANA comes there, that is my next big show.
Edited to add: Hey Russ, when I spell checked my thread with Outlook (as I often do), it tried to change JFK's to Joke's. I hope this is not how everyone feels

Seriously, Russ is a great contributor to this forum, and a guy I would want in my corner when dealing with scammers, trolls, and other spawn of Satan.

Russ is a good choice. It is my suspicion that much of his day is taken up just answering questions that are put to him in PM's.

I'm flattered, grateful and profoundly embarassed.
However, I believe that if there were such an award as Member of the Year, it should be someone who is far more well-rounded in numismatics than I. Someone who possesses a wide range of knowledge in a wide range of series. Someone who has an extensive and deep level of experience. My focus is narrow and limited, and I've not even scratched the surface of the myriad aspects of the hobby.
I also think it should be someone who is diplomatic and understanding, with the inate ability to see all sides and consider all feelings. I'm a bull in a china shop, and am frequently an asshole.
All of that means that there are approximately 8000 members more qualified.
I do thank you, though.
Russ, NCNE
I don`t know him as well as some of the other members do. It`s just after reading dbldie55 post, Russ is a good example of just simplily enjoying this hobby. Thats part of what this hobby is about and that is just simply having fun.

Russ: would this statement change if you found out that the prize was a 1964 accent hair???!
But seriously, as a fellow Kennedy Proof collector and also someone who tries to maintain photographs of my coins, I, too have found Russ's help invaluable on both topics. But there are so many helpful people on the board, it's hard to pick just one.
My thanks and appreciation go out to Russ and all the others (who I'm not going to name for fear of omitting 20 or 30 of them!!).

BTW - I never have to guess whether you are speaking your mind. I prefer open books.
Come to think of it, that's what I like about Greg's posts too.
and it sets us apart from practitioners and consultants. Gregor

David might have come here to put out the fire from Rick Leaving, but he has been here answering questions that are pointed and blunt and he'd probably prefer weren't asked. Before those questions went unanswered. When Rick did the Q&A I asked some questions and they were ignored. I asked them when David started answering questions and every one of them was answered. EVERY ONE! They might not have all been answered to my liking, but at least I got an answer.
He also seems to be responding to the screams that have been heard for a year or two. We're seeing PR70s again. Preliminary evidence suggests that crossover rates are now up. He's listening to suggestions about how to better PCGS when before we were to go f ourselves (not by Rick).
For all the above, David Hall gets my vote for Member of the Year!

Suckup!
I hate that GMargooli guy; he once flamed me!
But, obviously some points where made that David Hall did take to heart. That he did listen to. And perhaps what you wrote, and the intensity it was written with... was exactly what PCGS needed to hear at this time.
At any rate, your acknowledgment of his coming here, AND sticking around here is a good thing. And I support you in that 100 percent.

Oh yeah, I get it!!! ME TOO!!! And, it has nothing to do with the batch of PCGS slabs that I am submitting soon in hopes of upgrading a few of the wonderful PCGS slabbed coins that I have the honor of owning and furthermore...

All in fun Bear, I promise.

We have so may really great candidates ,
why limit it to just one person. Why not 5 people of the year?
My list would include: Clankeye , Russ, David Hall, Braddick, Michael

I would hate to have the task of picking 1 person because there is so many that have contributed so much.
Personally Conder101 has shared the most with me because I'm into Sample Slabs in a really big way and his knowledge in the area has been most beneficial in telling the history of the grading companies through the different holders they used over the years.
And like other have said, David Hall for providing us this playground.

I like him (yes, I admit it) and he has done a great job here RECENTLY. But, he has appeared here only recently and only after things got difficult for PCGS. Where was he when Rick M. was still at PCGS and not addressing people's questions/problems? I think it is unfair to place all, or even most of the blame on Rick for that. Surely someone at PCGS could have stepped in or asked Rick to do more.
If David sticks around on a consistent and valuable basis, consider him for next year - but, it's too soon to award him an award of this magnitude! Let's see if he has staying power and if he really is homerunhall or pinchithall, instead.
I also vote against coinguy1.
He has been here for less than half the year, even if it seems like much, much longer.
Additionally, he is a dealer and I think of this as more of a collector's forum. That's two quick strikes against him, right there.
Who would I vote for? I really don't know. There are many worthy candidates but it's like comparing apples to oranges or, numismatically speaking, untoned vs. toned coins. There is no right answer, no matter how strong the opinions might be.
