Oops, I did it again, I bought a NGC slab!

My 4th in 4 mos. Is this a trend!?

Is it me or are there fewer nice PCGS coins out there? I now see lots of nicer coins in NGC holders whereas before it was the other way around. Also just fewer PCGS slabs in dealer cases and recent auctions.

Anyway, my latest is an 1845-D $2.50 AU50, the PCGS slab one was almost $800 more! These decisions are getting easier all the time! I know, buy the coin and not the slab!

pcgs was the first, and has the name, however they are not the only ones that know how to grade coins, and to think so would be limiting your self to to just one company, and one way of thinking, one could be missing out on some very nice items, or having your items graded, just as good or better from ngcimage
  • Less and less PCGS coins available means money in the bank! Guess we know what slabs are wanted, will NGC ever be as popular? More power to you, I just dont have the time to find the few that arent overgraded! Does the difference in price make up for the overgrade?

I guess that means 85% of what I own is overgraded. Back to the drawing board.image

    Roadrunner,

Don't believe everything you read from WSM. He's a diehard PCGS fanatic. He admits it, and he's even said that no one can tell him different. Besides, for what you're into (i.e., coins!), that's quite far from where his expertise lies.

  • NGC can have good coins and it is good that you have looked past the slab. I am trying to do the same thing, but it is hard.

I bought my first Frankie this weekend- 1953 MS65

--Oops! Now that I look, it too is in an NGC slab. How could I have possibly let that happen. HEHE

PS- Don't tell my wife - she cut me off buying coins till the end of the year- I paid cash so she won't find out.

(sorry, at my laptop and unable to scan)

I am trying to do the same thing, but it is hard.

Why is it hard? Is there a physical, psychological, intellectual or emotional barrier that makes this difficult?

Some of the most stunning toned coins are housed in NGC slabs. Same for early cameo proofs and original early proof sets.

I buy coins I like from either service.

I'll cite a story that illustrates the attitudes that some of my customers and I have about this issue of brand loyalty. One day a customer called me about a coin he had examined from the my case at a prior day's show. Both of us could describe the coin in detail, but neither of us could remember if it was in a PCGS or NGC holder.

To paraphrase the Clinton campaign: It's the COIN, stupid. BUY the coin NOT the holder!!!!!
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I was A diehard PCGS fan ,but the price of my proof washingtons are nuts in pcgs, so i started buying pr68 cam in NGC for almost nothing
got my 1954 pr68 cam for $58 ,heck i would put it up against any pr69 cam in pcgs, i still wont buy copper in Ngc yuck!! or Dimes all the Ngc dimes only have cam on the obv.but silver quarters and halves heck yea!!! as long as the price stays down

I think it is more of the crossover game that makes it hard. Buying a coin in a PCGS holder allows me to instantly add the coin to my set whereas a NGC holder I have to cross/crack and wait for the results. It can take up to a month until I get my coin back.

I like your response, Cameron. I wish more would have your kind of goal-oriented approach. Choosing the registry above simply getting nice coins is a worthwhile goal. It isn't my goal. I just want nice coins -- raw or slabbed. If I can somehow pay less for the coin, then I am even happier. If the marketplace is affording me this opportunity, then that's great.

I can have this attitude because I'm not one who readily sells his coins. I plan on holding my material for a very long time, and by then who can predict the market forces?!?

However, if I were trying to make money, then I'd be more attune to prevailing market conditions.

BTW, for those who love to play the registry game but don't want to miss out on the NGC-slabbed specimens, there's an option that we all know about... Of course, that option still precludes nice coins in other-brand holders!

    Cameron,

You can also register your set at NGC, where you can list your PCGS and NGC Type coins. image

image Yeah, since I just buy PCGS then I don't look for quality. Not true. I look for qulaity coins also. I also buy raw coins and submit them to PCGS.

When I buy PCGS coins I may be limiting myself, but for what I collect in the grade and price range it works good for me.
