this is my first post here. I'm 16 (a junior member i guess) and i have some knowledge of coins as far as grading and overall knowledge. So, hello!!!!!!!!!
My questions are:
1)Are the bags that contain 500 or so coins which are labeled as unsearched, actually unsearched or have they usually been searched and have had all of the "good" dates taken out of them?
2)What is the best computerized program for keeping track of coins and keeping track of what coins you have and what coins you desire to get? (or is it better to do the bookeeping by hand?)
PS-i'm currently collecting Indian Head Cents, so anyone with Good-Very fine specimens under $50, i'd be interesting in seeing what you have to offer (especially any 1877's)

2) I use MS Excel to track my collection. One tab is purchases, one is sales, the one for each "collection" or inventory. Tracking Indian Head Cents this way would be simple.
Welcome to the boards! If you expand your knowledge before you expend your money, you will make fewer mistakes than many of us have.

As a rule they have been searched. Same for the 55 gallon drums found in back yards.

I use CoinManage from Liberty Street. I find it quite functional and allows adhoc queries. Only problem is the
prices are not even remotely accurate but you can enter your own values. Many different approaches exist.

I don't collect Indianheads but a lot of people here do. And they post a lot, so there is much to be learned about the series here.
You already impress me, in that you are asking questions before you leap. That will be very valuable to you.
Enjoy yourself on the forum and in the hobby.

There is a program called coin inventory that a member here has been beta testing for free. Do a search in the forum and you can find the link to his site.
Glad you're aboard!
NONE of my bags have been searched! AND they are cheaper than on e-bay! I carefully hand select the coins that go into the bags and then - and I swear - once they are in there they are NEVER searched!
Hope you enjoy your time here - an interesting bunch of characters.

Most of the 'unsearched bags' have been searched several times over (I wouldn't waste my time on them).
I do all of my tracking in an Excel spreadsheet and it works alright for me (but then I probably don't have the inventory that some of these other guys have).
I also have a bunch of G4 to G6 Indians from the 1890's to the 1900's that I would be willing to send your way - drop me a PM with your address and I will package them up and ship them out (at no charge to you!). Always willing to help young IHC collectors!

I believe that most of the "unsearched" bags have been searched many times over and that this is a way for people to unload undesireable(ugly) coins. There may be exceptions to this but this has been my experience.
As far as a computer program I agree with itsnotjustme, Excel is a wonderful program for keeping track of your coins.

A YN is a Young Numismatist (Collector). There are a few of us on the boards here, but there are hundreds across the US. The American Numismatic Association (www.money.org) has alot of Yn activities for the younger collectors. Here is a Link to some of them. Some require membership, but the weekly e-mail newsletter does not and is a great source of info. Hope some of this helps.
