Your icon - your choice and others' perceptions?

coinguy1coinguy1 Posts: 13,484 ✭✭✭
I'm curious about how and why different forum members choose their icons - why do you choose the ones you do? Do you think it affects how others perceive you and your posts? Do you let other posters' icons affect how you view their posts?

Sometimes, for instance, I read a message and think to myself, wow, that was a really intelligent and/or informative post and from a person who has a goofy icon - what a surprise - he (or she) must be smarter than I realized! Do any of you find yourselves wondering about stuff like this or do I just have too much spare time on my hands? image

  • Mine is Underdog!!!!!

Why, because in this hobby that is how I see myself sometimes.

There are some that make me think and probably lead me down the path of developing a preconceived idea concerning that persons intellect. image or personality.

  • Mark,
This ought to be an interesting thread. Some icons are quite unusual and/or different and it does make me think a little bit about the poster's personality. Mine is simple (like me), I enjoy NASCAR Winston Cup racing,(largest and fastest growing spectator sport in America BTW) and my favorite driver is Dale Jarrett, of the number 88 car. This also ties in with my eBay user I.D. jlw88. I also dig Spongebob Squarepants, so it wasn't an easy choice! I'm sure I'll go back to a coin icon someday, Jefferson and Franklin are a couple of my heroes.image

My icon shows my two favorite coins (a classic and a modern). Personally, I don't think one's choice of icon reflects one's personality or subject matter knowledge. MOO image

Mine's the reverse of my ex-Benson PCGS PR63 CAM Barber half. Gonna change it soon, most likely, to my new PR64 RD 1868 2c piece.

I guess the icon i selected reflects to me that i have been hoarding gold and silver in all forms for 35 years now.

When I first joined this forum, I did it almost as a whim. I had no idea I would come to value it as much as I do. It asked me for a user name, so I stole my cat's nickname. It asked me to pick an icon and what do you know there was a beautful Booker T reverse just sitting there to be used. I love Booker T's, so that was an easy one for me. I love the icon, I wish it was my coin.

But, I feel kind of bad, because the other day I clicked on a thread and there was my icon on somebody else's post! And I realized since he had joined first, that I may have infact taken an icon he created and uploaded. I sort of felt like a thief. But, I love my Booker icon, and I really don't want to change it. I am a creature of habit.

I uploaded my icon specifically because I like coins, trees, and coins with trees. So in my case, it has nothing to do with intelligence, and a lot to do with obsession.image mdwoods

  • I just picked a cool looking coin. Those icons that flash and jump alot mess with my cursor, so i don't like those. (but to each his own)

    B.

BTW, i wish we could upload our own icons. If we had a mod, they could check each icon befor eit was made public to prevent abuse of it like before. (was there a pool on how long it would be before someone mentioned uploading?)

No, really, I like to dress with a theme so I try to choose something that is close to the season, sign of the times etc.image

Me, I chose the best one available for me that represents Tennessee. I would use something a little different, but every time there was a chance to add one, I wasn't in the position to get the stuff to do it.

Carol allowed this for a day recently (which is why mine is there). I believe she indicated she would open it up once a month.

    1. I came to California because I heard there was gold in the rivers–never did find enough to coin one of these babies though
    2. Live in SF
    3. Have had professional/business dealings with descendants of Baldwin and other gold rush families
    4. Spend my free time riding my horse–in fact I think I will sign off and go feed him a carrot.
And everything else aside, it's the neatest gold coin struck in the US of A.

I wish I knew how to upload my own icon because I've got a pic of my latest purchase ready to go. I didn't realize the nickname that they prompted me for was going to be my username. An email address that I have dedicated to all the coin-mail that I generate is
thewashingtonquarterguy@cox.net (TWQG) so I just put the first thing that came to mind. And the icon thingy confused me too, I thought people owned them so I tried to pick one I didn't think was being used.

Can anyone tell me when/how we can upload icons? I've heard 100x100 and less than 10kB? Can it be jpeg or does it have to be gif?

It's also interesting how our icons become attached to our forum indentities after a while. I once changed mine and was told pretty firmly by another long time member to change it back. And he was right, it felt like I was wearing someone else's face.

Mine is my current favorite coin and I have not seen any correlation between icons and IQ, knowledge or maturity.

  • I have this icon now because I love classic cameo proofs. Someday, I'll own a classic gold proof.

I will load my own icon!!!! I guess that we can do this on the 15th of the month. Rats!!! I have to be away from my computer on the 15th of this month. Oh well, I can live with this icon for another month.

I have a serious icon but I counteract it sometimes with a wacky sig line. I don't want anyone to think that I am too serious.

Drat! The second recent post that will be a hit that I wanted to do (alright- mine was recognizing people by their icon... but still [im going to start that one image])

    My icon:

1- I've flown the plane pictured twice (El Al 747-458, 4X-ELB image)
2- I love Israel (as if you couldn't tell by the sig)
    3- I love planes

Wow! This icon fits me like a glove!

I am fascinated by volcanoes. And I was lucky enough to see that Carol had opened up the forum to allow us to upload our own image, with about 2 minutes left. So I barely made it. Also, I am a grad student in geology, which explains my icon.

Only a few of the icons gives me a mental image of what those peolpe are like. Most don't though. None of the coin icons do either.

In real life my nick is BullDog and this was the only dog icon available. Dog97 is the closest match I could get to my eBay ID.
The multilated goofy grinnin penny and my sig subtly insinuating that everybody & everything is crazy probably makes me look like goofball & makes me less apt to be taken seriously but I don't care because I'm here for the Morgans since I'm a serious Morgan collector.

And yes, I look at a persons icon and the way they "talk" in their posts and form a picture in my mind about how they are in real life.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

I picked my icon because this is a Coin Board, and my icon is my very favorite coin.
  • I chose mine because I used to make a living photographing dogs. I still don't know squat about coins, so I picked an icon that I knew something about.

I chose my icon for several reasons. In 1999, I decided to teach myself some Portuguese before a vacation in Brasil. It's a tough language, but I enjoy this sort of thing, and from my father, I inherited an aptitude for it. I fell in love with Brasil, have been back every year since then, and try to use Portuguese whenever possible.

The second reason is a dream I have. I've been a runner for 34 years and want to run another marathon, but I don't know if my body will let me do it. The last time in Río de Janeiro, I saw a Vasco de Gama (soccer) team jersey, which has the white, black and red cross which was on all Portuguese caravelas in De Gama's time. For a runner, 34 years at it is a very long time; in some ways, my bod is a lot like an old Portuguese caravela. If I am fortunate enough to be able to train and get to the starting line, I will be wearing that jersey.

I was using the same icon that Frank Corso had been using long before I came, and felt bad about it, but there were only a couple of Jeffersons to choose from.

When the gates were opened briefly last month, Randy (RGL) helped me create the icon, and the great folks at CU helped me upload an image of my 42-P DCAM, which will be my "avatar" for quite some time, I hope.

Greg and Dog97's icons definitely are "them," to me, too.image

Mark, did you pick Poindexter to avoid the "goofy" problem you mentioned?image

  • Well Mark, I picked mine I guess because of being from Wisconsin of course and my favorite City in Wisconsin is Madison-home of the Wisconsin Badgers. Everytime I look at my icon I wish I would have chosen a different one. Why- I see the image as being a tough bully. Just my perception, but not at all how I am.
