Your icon - your choice and others' perceptions?

I'm curious about how and why different forum members choose their icons - why do you choose the ones you do? Do you think it affects how others perceive you and your posts? Do you let other posters' icons affect how you view their posts?
Sometimes, for instance, I read a message and think to myself, wow, that was a really intelligent and/or informative post and from a person who has a goofy icon - what a surprise - he (or she) must be smarter than I realized! Do any of you find yourselves wondering about stuff like this or do I just have too much spare time on my hands?

Why, because in this hobby that is how I see myself sometimes.
There are some that make me think and probably lead me down the path of developing a preconceived idea concerning that persons intellect. or personality.
The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.
This ought to be an interesting thread. Some icons are quite unusual and/or different and it does make me think a little bit about the poster's personality. Mine is simple (like me), I enjoy NASCAR Winston Cup racing,(largest and fastest growing spectator sport in America BTW) and my favorite driver is Dale Jarrett, of the number 88 car. This also ties in with my eBay user I.D. jlw88. I also dig Spongebob Squarepants, so it wasn't an easy choice! I'm sure I'll go back to a coin icon someday, Jefferson and Franklin are a couple of my heroes.

When I first joined this forum, I did it almost as a whim. I had no idea I would come to value it as much as I do. It asked me for a user name, so I stole my cat's nickname. It asked me to pick an icon and what do you know there was a beautful Booker T reverse just sitting there to be used. I love Booker T's, so that was an easy one for me. I love the icon, I wish it was my coin.
But, I feel kind of bad, because the other day I clicked on a thread and there was my icon on somebody else's post! And I realized since he had joined first, that I may have infact taken an icon he created and uploaded. I sort of felt like a thief. But, I love my Booker icon, and I really don't want to change it. I am a creature of habit.

BTW, i wish we could upload our own icons. If we had a mod, they could check each icon befor eit was made public to prevent abuse of it like before. (was there a pool on how long it would be before someone mentioned uploading?)

No, really, I like to dress with a theme so I try to choose something that is close to the season, sign of the times etc.

Carol allowed this for a day recently (which is why mine is there). I believe she indicated she would open it up once a month.

Edit to add:
This is the one I want to use:
Does it make me seem smarter.

And everything else aside, it's the neatest gold coin struck in the US of A.

thewashingtonquarterguy@cox.net (TWQG) so I just put the first thing that came to mind. And the icon thingy confused me too, I thought people owned them so I tried to pick one I didn't think was being used.
Can anyone tell me when/how we can upload icons? I've heard 100x100 and less than 10kB? Can it be jpeg or does it have to be gif?
I will load my own icon!!!! I guess that we can do this on the 15th of the month. Rats!!! I have to be away from my computer on the 15th of this month. Oh well, I can live with this icon for another month.
I have a serious icon but I counteract it sometimes with a wacky sig line. I don't want anyone to think that I am too serious.
My icon:
1- I've flown the plane pictured twice (El Al 747-458, 4X-ELB )
2- I love Israel (as if you couldn't tell by the sig)
3- I love planes
Wow! This icon fits me like a glove!

PS- I still think BlueCole has the coolest sig

or do u mean the picture?
Only a few of the icons gives me a mental image of what those peolpe are like. Most don't though. None of the coin icons do either.
The multilated goofy grinnin penny and my sig subtly insinuating that everybody & everything is crazy probably makes me look like goofball & makes me less apt to be taken seriously but I don't care because I'm here for the Morgans since I'm a serious Morgan collector.
And yes, I look at a persons icon and the way they "talk" in their posts and form a picture in my mind about how they are in real life.

Here's a warning parable for coin collectors...

The second reason is a dream I have. I've been a runner for 34 years and want to run another marathon, but I don't know if my body will let me do it. The last time in Río de Janeiro, I saw a Vasco de Gama (soccer) team jersey, which has the white, black and red cross which was on all Portuguese caravelas in De Gama's time. For a runner, 34 years at it is a very long time; in some ways, my bod is a lot like an old Portuguese caravela. If I am fortunate enough to be able to train and get to the starting line, I will be wearing that jersey.

When the gates were opened briefly last month, Randy (RGL) helped me create the icon, and the great folks at CU helped me upload an image of my 42-P DCAM, which will be my "avatar" for quite some time, I hope.
Greg and Dog97's icons definitely are "them," to me, too.
Mark, did you pick Poindexter to avoid the "goofy" problem you mentioned?

But I'm also a big Pink Floyd fan, and the prizm is universally recognized to anybody born before 1970 as belonging to Dark Side of the Moon. (Ironically enough, I was born in 1978.)
