Beorn- you can't have my BensonBarberBaby (well, actually, you could use the icon, but the coin is one of my favorites and I probably won't turn loose of it anytime soon).
However, if you would like a custom icon, I can make you one. It can only be uploaded around the 15th of each month, according to what Carol last told me. We used to have free icon uploading privileges but some losers spoiled it by uploading inappropriate icons, so now the privilege is limited to one day a month, and closely guarded by the watchdogs. So unless the Forum Empress has changed her mind, the 15th of each month is Icon Upload Day. (I was the one who suggested an Icon Upload Day once a month, and she went for it, but I still keep missing my opportunity).
Hmm... with your ID, I think of something Tolkienesque, somehow. Wasn't Beorn the shapeshifter fella who turned into a bear?
Hey, look- I even found a picture of him on google, from an old calendar! It could be trimmed down to an icon. But it's probably copyrighted.
[qSometimes, for instance, I read a message and think to myself, wow, that was a really intelligent and/or informative post and from a person who has a goofy icon - what a surprise - he (or she) must be smarter than I realized! Do any of you find yourselves wondering about stuff like this or do I just have too much spare time on my hands? >>
Well, my icon might not reflect I'm a straight shooter Coinguy1, but yes I think you have too much time on your hands
Please... Save The Stories, Just Answer My Questions, And Tell Me How Much!!!!!
The one I wonder about most is cacheman - looks alot like Fat Freddy, a "favorite" comic book character from the "head shop" days of the late 60's and 70's....would like to know more about why he chose it.....so cacheman, what's the story behind the icon??

Cacheman's icon is Fat Freddy. I know this because I clicked on "properties" to read the title of it, the first time I saw it, it was so unusual. I had no idea who Fat Freddy was, though. You have just enlightened me.
When I signed up, there were some "stock" cartoonish characters and the cu logo available to choose from. I don't think many, if any had uploaded icons of their own yet. The decision at the time was pretty simple. I didn't like the "perception" offered by any of the, I thought goofy, choices available, so I took the logo. I have liked some of the new ones, but upon popular demand, I keep the logo.
It was one of my favorite comics in Jr. high - "Fat Freddies Friends" - though the content was decidedly drug culture and adult themes....it was funny for it's time.

But I'm also a big Pink Floyd fan, and the prizm is universally recognized to anybody born before 1970 as belonging to Dark Side of the Moon. (Ironically enough, I was born in 1978.) >>
MastaHanky, A very cool icon indeed, from the coolest of albums, Dark Side of the Moon has been on Billboard's Top 100 album list since it's release. There is a plant in Germany that does nothing but put out CD's of this immortal work. Also Fat Freddy (cacheman) icon is cool too! (From the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers comics) Can anyone name the other two characters? Joe
Spineynorman, I believe you are correct! Phineas is the one I couldn't recall, and yes Fat Freddy's cat (who thought his name was Scat!) was the best. Joe

Lakesammmam - You are correct-o-moondo....Fat Freddie it is. When I first got here last March I was going through the icons that were available and came upon a great cartoon of Fat Freddie, wearing a fedora no less. Because this dude reminded me of the simpler carefree days of the sixties I had to use him for my icon. I was in high school at the time and brings back good memories....well, what I can remember that is. Anyway, I used him for a month or so and then he disappeared. CarolJ couldn't do anything about bringing him back so I did a internet search and found a multitude of webpages about the Furry Freak Brothers. I filtched a new cartoon of Freddie from one of these and have been using him ever since.
It is strange that this should come up today because a guy I work with returned a stack of books and magazines I had lent him about five years ago.....in the pile were two Furry Freak Brother Comix........cosmix, eh? Peace, Love, Hashpipes, incense

I wish I had a lot of the coins that the icons were made from. I think the coinguy1 icon is fitting because Mark makes intelligent posts. And Stujoe's new icon is killer - and LOL@ cacheman's So what's your point?
I have a coin icon ready to load, but hans mole-man is quite fitting for me.
"I'm curious about how and why different forum members choose their icons - why do you choose the ones you do? Do you think it affects how others perceive you and your posts? Do you let other posters' icons affect how you view their posts?"
My first icon was the race car with the number three on it. A nice remembrance for Dale Earnhart fans but not coin related. I then switched to an icon of two-cents. I thought it was appropriate since it was coin related, and I was just adding my "two cents" to each thread I posted in. Recently I decided to make my own icon from a California gold token (fake I believe) which I bought as a kid over 30 years ago.
As for perceptions based on others icons, initially I do make the mistake of associating a goofy icon with a less knowlegeable person, but it's the content of the post that counts. Which leads to the question, why would someone use a goofy picture of Poindexter as their icon?

I started with a crab, picked by my daughter because "it's just like you, Dad!" After September 11th I switched to a fluttering U.S. flag. Now I've returned to the crab. There's no reason for the return.
I just recently changed mine. I used to have the Sponge Bob icon. The last time I was picking an icon my 9 year old daughter was next to me at the computer and as soon as she saw it she liked it. Her enthusiasm was so convincing that I picked that one for her. I picked my new one just because I haven't seen anyone else using it.
I chose my favorite US coin design (quite avante garde in it's day), but it never insulated me from the occasional stupid post. Wait...that's the opposite of what you intended in the thread, right?
Developing theory is what we are meant to do as academic researchers and it sets us apart from practitioners and consultants. Gregor
back before 9-11 supercoin uploaded a very cool proof SBA for me to use, than we all use the flag and I have never wanted anything else after that. I got an icon everyone likes.
I hate it when you see my post before I can edit the spelling.
Well let'me see... I picked Homer Simpson. Homer is balding, I am balding. Homer is a little overweight, I am a little overweight. Homer works in a high tech field, I work in a high tech field. Homer is funny as all get go, I have a wild sense of humor and I love Homers comedic ways. (My kids often chant, Dave is smart, Dave is funny...... ). No matter how badly Homer does, his Marge sticks by him, no matter how much I goof up, my Kim sticks by me. Lastly, poor Homer no matter how hard he tries, always seems to get the crappy end of the stick, but somehow he comes out smelling OK in the end. Thats me!! So in short, my ICON fits me to a T, and I love humor and Homer and the Simpsons in general are truly hilarious.
No deep thinking went into this, no marketing & image consultants, no icon reviews in front of test audiences.
My icon is a quick sketch I'd whipped up for something else originally. I saw icon upload was enabled recently, so I uploaded it lickety split.
I find many interesting coins detecting. The icon is poking fun at myself...my "lucky detector" has a horseshoe for a coil because I've had luck finding some nice coins, but have also found quite a few horse and ox shoes.
"A happy person is not a person in a certain set of circumstances, but rather a person with a certain set of attitudes"--Hugh Downs
We always flew the 13 star flag on our house on appropriate dates; flag day, the fourth, veteran's. We put it up shortly after 9/11 and it's been flying since. Seemed like a good choice. (Plus MY Kennedy proof icon was already being used by you-know-who.)

The Philadelphia Mint: making coins since 1792. We make money by making money. Now in our 225th year thanks to no competition.
I picked mine because the single proposition that two points on a practically rigid body always correspond to the same distance (line-interval), independently of any changes in position to which we may subject the body, the propositions of Euclidean geometry then resolve themselves into propositions on the possible relative position of practically rigid bodies.
And because I am a huge Bronco fan... well, I'm not personally huge, I just like the Broncos alot... you know what I mean.
Icons - comments, suggestions, questions and answers:
Carl/Clankeye - have you considered contacting the forum member with the same icon as yours and asking if it bothers him that someone else is using it? If it does, you could offer to pay him for exclusive use of it (until someone else grabs it again).
Russ - I've rattled my brain trying to figure out the reason you chose your icon and the answer simply eludes me. Any hints?
Paul/shylock - How long did you wait before changing back to your current icon?
BNE - you asked
<< <i>Mark, did you pick Poindexter to avoid the "goofy" problem you mentioned? >>
No, but more on that shortly.
Jay, for what it's worth, I don't see your icon as representing a "tough bully". And, even if it did, you don't sound that way in your posts (though if PCGS doesn't quit bodybagging coins of yours that it's previously graded, they'd better watch out!).
Sinin1 you asked
<< <i>Mark - what is yours? 1) a mad chemist mixing up some AT 2) a new graduate, getting squeezed out of his last dollar 3) something even better >>
And Steve 27, you asked
<< <i>Which leads to the question, why would someone use a goofy picture of Poindexter as their icon? >>
Mine is Poindexter, a character/scientist from Felix The Cat cartoons of long ago. I remember very little of him but thought it was as good of a choice as any. When I signed on, I looked at all of the selections twice, obsessed for a bit over which one to choose, realized that none were just right and chose Poindexter. I thought it apropos because (though I don't mix up AT!) I try to inform and teach others, hopefully in a non preaching, intimidating or threatening way. I thought that icon was the closest fit available.
relayer - thank you!
Don - if you've made any "stupid" posts, I either missed them or was too stupid to be aware of them
I guess I should upload one....though some would say mine fits . I've got a cam. on way. May need help from others with my pics. Thanks to all for past tips and future help. K
I originally had Howard the Duck then about 6 mos. after joining i found it was already being used so i changed to the 57 Prf. cam quarter, my birthyear. Jahar had been using Howard first so he should be the only one.
