Positive / Negative? Thanks.

I have had a few dealings all positive. He seems like a nice guy.
  • Harry is a nice guy. I used to deal with Harry a few years ago. Then I dropped out of collecting for a while. I believe him to be honest. I believe he is realistic in the descriptions of his coins. I never had any unpleasant surprises with him. I think he asks reasonable premiums for what he sells, and he was always friendly to me. Infact, I was looking at a coin on his website this week. Sent off an inquiry and got a quick response. I would be very surprised if you had any problems dealing with his company.

My father used to buy alot of stuff from him, he ended up with some pretty good stuff, but I don't know price wise as he never told me what it cost (really private that way).

Yes, all good. He really knows his commems, and is especially knowledgable of the WCs and BTWs. John Noonan, there is also good. Tell 'em your expectations of a coin, and they will let you know if their coin fits. Harry has written one of the most informative classic commem books, "Investing, Collecting & Trading Certified Commemoratives", an exhaustive study of slabbed commems.
  • You know, RegistryCoin, I think I'm going to call Harry tomorrow and get that commem. You reminded me just how good Harry is with them. Thanks to you too, DL for starting the thread.

  • HLRC is a first class operation. I purchased most of the 144 pc Early Commems thru Harry and John. I am lucky his place of business is in Newport News about a mile from my home. Just let them know what you are interested in and He will fix you up. Most of the coins he has are PQ and you will be happy with any coin you purchase.

From my brief conversations and occasional dealings with him over a long period of time, I believe him to be one of the good guys.

Not only did I just buy a great coin from them, but I got it at an unbelievable price.

I bought a 93-S from them one time mail order. I paid them with a credit card and they sent the coin right away.

At the last Long Beach show I bought two halves: 1861-O PCGS MS-62 and a 1875-S PCGS MS-64. Both were very nice coins, but FULL price. I did not have enough cash with me for both of them, so I asked if he would take my credit card. With no hassle, he took down my information and off I went with my two new coins. I was happy.

By my standards, I have had considerable dealings with Harry Laibstain as well as John Noonan. I don't always spend a lot of money with them.

No matter. I find my last dealing with them just as pleasant as my first dealing with them. I like them very much and would love to do much more business with them.

Nice and honest guy. If he has a coin you like you can deal with confidence. K
  • Harry is a straight shooter (as is his co-hort John). They should be no problem to deal with when either buying or selling. He also is extremely knowledgeable in Commems and pre -1850's coins.

Harry is a good guy. I see him at Baltimore and at some local shows. Always has time to talk.
Some refer to overgraded slabs as Coffins. I like to think of them as Happy Coins.

  • I want to post a little follow up on this thread.

I did order the commemorative that I spoke of earlier from Harry. I dealt with John and he was very friendly and responsive. The coin was shipped right away and I was told they would send me a complimentary copy of Harry's book Certifed Commemoratives as a gift. The coin arrived and I decided not to keep it. It was a good coin, but I am looking for one particular coin to represent this series, and I decided this wasn't it. I sent the coin back.

The next day the book arrived in the mail. I had forgetten about it. It's a real nice book, hard copy, with a lot of great information in it. Well, I called their office and asked if I could at least pay for the book. I felt a little bad, having returned the coin. It wasn't a high priced coin, and after the cost of shipping it AND separately shipping the book... I just felt like I wanted to give them something.

The bottom line is, they would not take any payment for the book, were just as friendly as if I had kept the coin, and rather than being a negative experience for both seller and buyer, made it a plus. At least for me. But, I wouldn't hesitate to do business with them again, so I have to think ultimately it will be a plus for them too.

I just wanted to bring this up here. Because I think it important we acknowlege the dealers that truly give that extra effort. Thanks for the book Harry, and John. I appreciate it.

  • I did some trading w/ John Noonan a few months back. I feel I was treated fairly & my trades were given fair prices. John sent the package to me overnight because I told him I was going out of town w/in a few days. Their coin prices are on the higher side, but they do have quality stuff.

Harry runs a good company. I've bought from them numerious times.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Have not bought anything from him, but he always has good material on display at Long Beach. Consistently has hard to find high grade 19th Century type & knows his coins. Prices seem fair. Am on his mailing list.

I think this is the first time I've seen one of the threads where not even a single response contains a hint of negative experience. This one is definitely bookmarked!

  • 1st time posting to this site but just wanted to thank everyone for their wonderful comments - both dealers and collectors. Contact us anytime (www.HLRC.com) and we'll treat you fairly. I don't often check this message board but the number of people contacting me regarding the positive comments was simply overwhelming - I had to take a moment to reply.
And for anyone that wants Harry's book on commems, just email me at john@hlrc.com and we'll ship it for free.
    Thanks again
    John

Welcome, John. Check in often. Your thoughts and comments would certainly be appreciated.
  • Not sure how much selling I should do on my posts but yes I do have 2c pieces and I believe all are pictured on the website at www.HLRC.com . If I'm not mistaken I ony have about 4 pieces in stock right now but it fluctuates. If the exact scan is not up yet on a particular piece just email me.
    Thanks
