opportunity vs. cash flow(conscience)

Is anyone here plagued by the following occasional feeling:
"I love that coin but I don't have the cash now, WILL another one come along when I will be able to afford it?"

Yes, every month since my spending splurge during spring and summer. Now I find myself yearning for more cash for coins. Unfortunately, standing at a street corner with a sign:

    NEED CASH FOR COINS

doesn't seem to be eliciting much sympathy from the travelling public.
  • I have that feeling all the time. But then I project down the road and know that I will be just as unable to afford the coin then as now, so I buy it.

  • every time i look at the B/S/T board. There always seems to be those nice coins on there.

Several times a year, especially when a 1861 PCGS Silver dollar comes up for auction.

I feel your pain as it has happened to me MANY times but if there is one thing I have learned from my 2 decades of collecting is that another one ALWAYS comes along and many times it is better then the first. Only in the most extreme cases (an ultra rare coin with a TRUE population that you can count on one hand) will you not get a second chance, and depending one the state of the market you may get a better coin for less then the original.
  • Happens to me all the time.. wanting something and wondering...maybe if I didnt eat out at all this month.. or maybe I will break down and sell off my gold stuff to the lousy offer from the coin store.. or if I can just make one more trip to the plasma center... sound familiar? Kris

This is quite common for me also. These days, I'm looking for type coins in a grade where they may be something like 300 of them available (for all dates). Invariably, when a nice one comes along, you can throw out the sheets & bid whatever your checkbook balance may be at the time. Often times, you still won't get the coin.

  • If you don't have money now, you probably won't ever have the money, so just buy it!!!!!!!!!image

yes yes froim my experience if you see a coin and pass for whatever reason

another one if you keep yourself open comes along that is not only nicer, better but less $$$$$$$$$ and/or a better value!

  • This was perfect timing for the thread since it has helped make a decision I have been contemplating about all day. This is a coin that I have bid on and considered sniping for my set, but the price keeps going higher. After reading the thread, I think I will save the money for Long Beach and wait for a better coin to come my way. Thanks everybody.

  • Yep, that might go 250- but I'm not a fan of the color. Rusted die?? Uniform rust color, how could it have gotten that way?image

  • I think the color in the camera is a little off. Look at the color of the blue slab label.

At the Long Beach show on Thursday, I was nearly out of cash when I came across a really nice Isabella quarter. The dealer said I could go ahead and take it as long as I paid him for it by the time the next Long Beach show rolls around. It was verrrry tempting, but I finally came to my senses and passed on it.
