Is this a coin that you are pretending to shop for, or one that you are pretending is in your collection?

Please show a photo of this one in the slab (blurring out the grade, of course).
    Thanks!

I’m surprised you mentioned your Morgan dollars previously, but not this coin.
I’ll guess AU58 but a higher grade wouldn’t surprise me.

I collect dollars, but just a smattering of each series. But my fav is seated civil war era dollars. I only own 1 Peace dollar in a capital plastics holder. Have always been thinking about sending it in for grading, just haven't yet, its a 1921.

I cannot locate any history on it and fortunately or unfortunately it is entombed in an old anacs holder. Which like everyone constantly tell me I should get it into a pcgs holder and then off to cac. But for a guy thats going to keep it I will leave it be where it's at. I know its worth a lot more in the so-called right clothes (ie a pcgs cac tomb) but I have never played the crack out game before (although I have nothing against that procedure). I will put in my sweatshirt pocket as I am placed under a big ole oak tree to decompose. lol

I don’t know about the grade, the OP, provenance, current owner, future acquirer, or anything else.

Yeah, I pretty much agree with other posters. It looks like a 55/58 coin. Not Unc, but close.

The question is why it hasn't been crossed. That makes me wonder (1) whether there is a hidden issue or (2) whether the label grade is much higher than we all expect.

    Or
    3) there’s no hidden issue and the grade’s not higher than we all expect, but no one thought or cared about trying to cross it.

Many posters here would be shocked at how many deserving coins haven’t been tried for crossover or upgrade. There are still great coins that haven’t seen the light of day in a very long time.

I think I can answer that question adequately. I have owned for years but the older gentleman I purchased it from was a long time collector for years. I met him through a mutual coin comrade and we got friendly. He told me about an entire collection of incredible classic coins in old ANACS holders that he has been holding on to that he was thinking of finally selling due to his sinking health. I told him that I had been collecting bust & seated dollars and he showed me this one . I jumped on it and he had seated dollars to show me and he past away. I assume his family was next in line. I believe I acquired it approximately 10 years ago.
Like I said I have never crossed anything, not that it wouldn't be more valuable but I paid up for this as if it were in a pcgs holder at the time because he had his nonnegotiable prices and I always agree with the adage the opportunity is sometimes the most important factor or something along those lines.

You're not wrong, and I always advocate the coin over the plastic. But statistically speaking, the odds are against you especially on early federal coinage.

Please note that I am not hating on old ANACS. I LOVE the holders and grading over all and have cherry picked many over the years.

I think it is a problem 55 that was improperly rinsed after its 2nd 3rd or 4th dip.. I don't think CAC holders a too dark 2nd skin Small Eagle Bust dollar as 58 which my guess is the ANACS grade but knowing them back them 61 would be in play. I think crossing to PCGS or CACG will be a sad game to play

I just had the photo taken on 10/12/2026 along with other coins in my collection. The old time collector had no photos of any consequence. That was not his thing apparently. And he was ill at the time. Its time for me to at least get more organized so my partner has the right knowledge and the right access to photos of everything. I will be having surgery soon and I wanted to finely get my act together.

I would not reject that coin from the photo, although I would have to see it in person before I would pay thousands of dollars for it. Most of the original early silver coins I have a fairly dark to dark. Silver tarnishes during two centuries.

I will post some early dollars later.

Let's see what you think of these early dollars.

Attractive, but not "original enough" for some. It's an NGC AU-53.

Many of you won't like this one at all. I bought it when I could not afford better. It's NGC graded AU-50

    Too dark?

    Too dark?

This was once in an old ANACS "soap bar" EF-45 holder. Now it's an NGC AU-55.

    Two views of an 1802

    Straight on.

At an angle. It is PCGS graded AU-58.

I agree with your posts as I typically do. And agree Bust coinage is almost more guilty when not thickly skined. I think the gloss black is worse than dove greys and an AU58 vs an 45 all come into play when talking about market preferences. The OP's coin is clearly on its multiple instances of skin and its obvious. Most of yours look like 2nd or greater skin too but look lower in the count or older in their development presenting more natural or organic.

The two of yours that look like they don't have market preferred skin is your 95 & 96 but the amount of meat makes them special but their skin is clearly modern era post the 90s maybe 2000s. Your 97 and 1802 look choice and over all it is an elite set, well done.

The total coin grade so to speak, I don't think there is a huge quality gap between the OP's 1795 and yours, both too rich for my blood but I would chose yours as metallic black with blues and greens isn't my cup of tea
