Do you own the first certified coin you bought?

I was going through some of my coins today. I still have the first certified coin I ever bought in 2011 (to be fair I did sell it once and bought it back ). I started collecting in 2010 and I bought this coin in 2011 when I found my niche. It's a @MFH (RIP friend) coin that he consigned to the dealer from a raw album he put together.

Yes, an 1810 half dollar (O-101} graded AU-50. It is no longer certified, however since for the first 10 or 11 years if I bought a slabbed piece it was immediately cracked out.

I had forgotten that I cracked out the first several slabs I bought to put in plastic holders so that my coins could be shown off in sets. Reversed course a few years later.

I made a number of Lincoln cents and gold in PCGS slabs before I bought any slabs. Sold them long ago.

Gone upwards of four decades ago. The longest I have owned a certified coin is a piece I purchased in 1996.

I purchased this around 1990 in the ANACS soap bar slab, cracked it out for my 7070, recently submitted it to PCGS, and it’s now in an AU50 holder.

Bought these in 1988 and still have them, although I cracked the 2 rattlers out and put them in albums. Didn’t like the look of the holders then and now as their popularity has increased, I look forward to searching them out and eagerly purchasing them for my collection.

The first coin I sent for grading was a 1909-S VDB that came back in an XF40 SoapBox holder... sold it with the rest of Lincoln Cents when I pared down the collection in 2012. Around the same time, I got this ICG example of 1941-D nickel... I still have the coin, but it was cracked years ago for my 7070...

Nope, it was turning grey instead of brown so I sold it and replaced, although I did like the Rattler holder, here is an old shot before it left me

Yes, but I didn't buy it. It was a raw 1888 P Morgan given to me by my Grandma. I submitted it to ANACS at the 2006 world fair of money and it graded 65 and it's the doubled ear VAM.

Yes, a 1953 Carver/Washington Comm. Half PCGS MS-63 in a rattler holder. I later got the "D" and "S" coin, also PCGS MS-63 also in rattler holder.

I don't, but I do remember what it was. It was a 1937-P PCGS MS65 Mercury, in a rattler. Probably sold it within 10 years. It was blast white, but my preference today is nicely toned coins, so she had to go. I miss her through, as she was the first!

No. It was a 1908 cent in MS-64, R&B. I cracked it out for my type set. I sold it later when I was a dealer.

I do not own the first certified coin I bought because I upgraded it.
On the other hand I do still own the first coins that I had certified myself.

Yes. My first would be a 1989 no VDB cent in a PCI holder. Before I knew any better. No pic off hand.

My second was PCGS 1875-CC double dime in AU55.

It is an ANACS MS63 Morgan that a dealer, I thought I had developed a relationship with and trusted, sold me for MS64-65 money. That was a valuable lesson.

This was circa 1981, and it convinced me to focus on gold and silver bullion coins, mostly ounce AGEs. ASEs, K-rands, and Maple Leafs, since my ability to grade coins was nil. That worked out well.

My first slabbed coin was a PCGS sample from one of the ANA shows that I still have. I don't remember what was the first slabbed coin that I bought. It's probably a piece of slabbed bullion that I have since sold.

I would be embarrassed to show you. A 1963 Lincoln Cent to ANACS. It came back VG. The plastic is worth more then the coin! 🤣 🤣 I'd be lucky if it was worth 1¢! 🤣

No, but it does have a story. I sent a raw to PCGS (yes, first every graded coin to own) 1884cc $$ with vibrant crescent obverse toning. Imagine the cheek and left field bright white and same with the reverse. MS64 (before plus grades). It had a perfect look. Sold on Ebay for a premium of course to a high school student. Had discussions with his Father about how legit I was! Anyway, told Dad and the kid I'd buy it back anytime for 10% back of PCGS price guide at the time. Fast forward 4 years and get an email from the kid, now in college. Would I still make good on my offer as he needed book money. I said yes and did, but gave him full PCGS value. Education was way more important than that silver dollar.
Sold later and now wish I'd have kept it. Seller's remorse!!

Yes I do, a 1928 Peace dollar in AU50 ANACS old white holder, bought in 2004, but it got cracked to put into a Capitol plastics full set holder. I still have the coin as part of the set.

2007 Gold Buffalo and a 2007 Platinum Eagle, both PCGS PR69, bought at the same time as the financial crisis was ramping up. I sold the platinum last year, still have the buffalo.

Yes. I’ve had this one since the 90’s. However, I crossed it (somewhat regrettably) from an ANACS soapbox to PCGS. MS62 in both holders. Also the first toned coin I owned and perhaps the reason that I prefer toned coins.

No, I bought a group of slabbed commems in rattlers in 1987 but once the green label Pcgs holder came out, I thought... no one is going to want rattler coins from now on.... and unloaded them. Very clever of me.

Bought a fully original NGC 1916 D MS 62, in my favorite holder, the NGC number seven, in the late 90s. Ended up selling it to a former walker friend and upgraded it to a PCGS 64. I still own my 1917 D obverse in MS 63 PCGS. That was my second ever certified coin purchased around 1997 It’s in an old blue holder. Since my collection pre-dates CAC most of them have never been to the bean factory, and a lot of them are in older holders. A lot of us older walker guys have collections like that. @Walkerguy21D has a lot of Coins like that in his collection and can attest to my thoughts. @oreville is another who knows what I am talking about. His 1921 Ms 66 OGH is the nicest in existence and purchased in the late 90s. He did have the presence of mind to send it to the bean factory and it is now stickered.

Not the first slab I owned, almost for sure. Not even sure if I recall what that was.

I do however have several coins I bought certified in 1994, and then two which show September of 1991 (this being one of them). I sent it in to CAC a few years ago and it has a sticker now.

I do not still have it, but I'm pretty sure it was an 1879-S Morgan graded 63 in a rattler. Probably bought in the late 80's

Yes I still own it. I also still own the silver coins i found in my change as a kid. A teacher showed me how to easily spot silver coins. He used to maintain the gym coke machine & go through the coins as he'd empty it. I've never sold anything & have enjoyed the hobby about 40 years.
