That is a sweet coin. I'm approaching a similar stage of my collecting. Like you, I have never owned a 55 DD and, also like you, I have always wanted to own one. But, unlike you, I have not purchased one. So congratulations on your purchase. It is really pretty!
I bought one with “It’s real!” old ANACS papers many years ago. Later NGC called it “MS-62,” It’s really an AU-58. Congratulations! Your piece is better.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
Congratulations on a fantastic looking coin. The color and luster are at the peak for a 58. One I have always wanted as well, but that ‘55 has eluded me. Maybe some day!
But I'll just give you the short version and see if Mike wants to fill in any other pieces.
So glad to see it arrived safe and he's showing it off here.
.
So, anyway, Mike and I were on the phone late last Friday night (in the midnight hour for him ... not nearly so late on this side of the country), talking about Coins and Currency, retirement and life in general, when he started talking about this '55 Double Die he saw on his favorite website. How it was always a dream coin of his, and would probably be the most he had ever spent on a coin. He was questioning if he really wanted to do it, that he could do it, that he might never try for one again if he didn't do it, that he had discussed with his wife, and she had green-lighted it ... on and on.
He was so excited about the prospect I had to look while we were talking, and was immediately impressed my the look and apparent quality of the coin. I told him so, and we rambled on some more and wrapped up the call. I mentioned I thought he should do it if it felt right to him as it looked like a great coin.
"Maybe I'll buy it if it's still there in the morning", was how he left it.
.
Exactly 13 minutes later, I get a text from Mike;
I just bought the 55DD
My response here is the same as to that text;
Good for you Mike!
Congratulations!!!

Sometimes I guess you really don't need to sleep on it!!
“We are only their care-takers,” he posed, “if we take good care of them, then centuries from now they may still be here … ”

Lovely-looking Lincoln. If I was on the trail of cool wheaties, THAT would be the coin I’d want.
Absolutely love it. Congrats Mike.
