My latest NEWP - 1813 cent. Big Photos.

renomedphysrenomedphys Posts: 3,675 ✭✭✭✭✭

The coin is an S-292, 1813 large cent in MS63BN with CAC, ex Naftzger, Reynolds, Husak. It was the only coin in the FUN auction that I went after in earnest. There was a similarly graded 1812, CAC and all, but it wasn’t as much to my liking. At lot viewing, my notes read simply: “Nice” and “Bid $20K” The $18K bid took it.

Here’s the coin in-hand, under a halogen lamp:

And here are the close-ups:

And lastly the PCGS Trueview, which is pretty meh IMHO:

I don’t know if this should be a discussion about the coin or the photograph. I really had to try hard to get the coin perfectly flat with respect to the lens, but I really wanted to be able to see the luster on all the devices. I believe now you can pretty much see everything. Here’s a shot of the weird balancing act I employed:

Maybe somewhere somebody makes a leveling pad that’s intuitive to use. Even if it were a ball-head with a flat surface that you could rotate, I think that would be handy. I know my janky setup doesn’t pass muster. Anyways, I hope this reaches you well!

Cheers!

Fantastic! I’m not well versed in old copper, but I can feel a sense of early US history just admiring it. That’s a special piece to have in your stable, and congratulations on the exciting acquisition.

I was sitting with a dealer at FUN and we were going through my box of copper. I don’t think he was a copper specialist or anything, but he looks at my box and just says: “This is tough stuff. People just don’t realize how rare this stuff really is, in this condition. It’s just so much easier to find quality gold and silver.”

Maybe the quotes don’t belong, maybe the wording wasn’t exact, but that’s what he was saying. Gold/silver: easy. Copper: Hard.

    My thoughts exactly 😉

Nothing easy about Silver in Unc condition with natural surfaces from that era, but I agree, Copper is orders of magnitude harder.

Congtrats! That's a lovely cent. I've got a bunch of nice middle and late dates, but moved to half dimes rather than early date LCs. I still peek at the LCs for possible upgrades, or for early date type. Your new coin is pretty much exactly what I'd want...

Yes, congratulations! It's way better than the one I just bought for my date set.

I'd love to fill my early coin type set with Mint State pieces, but that is not finanically possible.

You did very well. It has outstanding eye appeal and you got it for a very good price. The last time it was in auction one year ago at HA the winner overpaid for it badly. Following is the description from that auction to emphasize what a wonderful coin it is:

    1813 S-292 CENT, MS63 BROWN
    EQUAL TO FINEST GRADED
1813 S-292 R2 MS63 Brown PCGS, CAC Approved. Lustrous chocolate brown and steel with lighter reddish steel brown faded down from mint color in protected areas, mostly on the obverse. A frosty, very attractive cent, essentially flawless. The notable marks are a microscopic planchet flake under the left foot of the second 1 in the date, a tiny tick on the jaw over the throat, and a tiny scratch over the left top of the E in AMERICA. E-MDS, Breen state II, with die clashmarks on both sides and light radial die flowlines in the fields. Graded MS60 and CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #34165 (Noyes lists only 2 mint state examples of the die variety). Bland says AU55 and tied for CC#4. This cataloger's EAC grade is MS60. The attribution and Great Pacific Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label. PCGS population 2; none finer. 36511.63/32982051.

The Classic Head Cent is my favorite coin design. A real problem with pre 1815 Unc. copper is that bad things can happen in holder. I had an 1804 Half Cent with stems (the type coin) in MS 65 BN start to develop PVC in holder 8 years after I bought it.

The 1812-4 Classics also have substandard planchets, as we used to get them from England. During the War of 1812, we had to make them from scratch ourselves. This is an incredibly clean coin. You don't see many Classics like this one.

    Very nice coin!

    Just wow!
It would be above average even if it were a “common” Randall hoard cent; seeing a Classic head cent of that quality is outstanding!

Regarding scarcity of copper vs-silver, yeah I’ve thought many times how much easier it would have been to have done a date and major varieties of Bust halves collection in VF-AU vs- large cents. Other than the Randall hoard dates, nice large cents prior to 1831 are tough!
Dimes and quarters though are also pretty tough in their own regard.
