My latest copper NEWP! 1849 1/2 Cent

ashelandasheland Posts: 23,231 ✭✭✭✭✭

I have a very hard time finding copper with surfaces that I like! That all changed yesterday when I saw this one…

For a cell phone, these pictures came out pretty well I think…

With a terrific TrueView! at least I like it

Post your Half Cents! B)

Very nice. I’ve been thinking about a 49er set to go with my territorials. Cool year.

That is a very nice looking example you've got! Congratulations. I see some strike weakness in the lower portion of the date, same as mine. Looks like great surfaces on that one-

and I just checked mine, same die rotation on the reverse as your example.

Tough date. Just a slight break in the hair to the viewer's lt. of bowknot on obverse, hence the grade. A very attractive coin.

Love AU Brown Coppers. Great Die Rotation. Love rotated dies and anything over 20% is great in my opinion. Some great coins posted by all.
    Love your 1806 Greg.

Actually it could be. Either die couldve rotated. There's no way to tell. It's just always been measured by the reverse.

Here’s one of mine… sorry for the shoddy pics. originally purchased raw from cvm

I am just glad that the TrueView has them both straight for reasons of OCD. :D 😂

That’s a super attractive coin @asheland . I love the eye appeal. Congratulations!

I own only three, for my Type Sets:

I call this next one my “Ash Wednesday” Half Cent. I bought it as a 64RD w/CAC. When I got it in hand, I liked it so much that I sent it back to PCGS for Reconsideration. Sure enough, despite the large carbon spot, they agreed, and added on the “Plus” (that almost triples the Price Guide value):

This one is also graded 64+RD w/CAC:

Like your Indian Head Cents, these type coins are absolutely SPLENDID!!! 🥰

Looks like about a 90* rotated reverse as well. Not too uncommon in early copper, in my experience. The date is a bit weak, but I would have bought it too, because as you said, finding eye pleasing early copper is not easy at all.

Here is my favorite half cent of my own collection, and it's only a VF30! But, I just fell in love with it as soon as I saw it, and it took me about 0.68 seconds to hit the BUY NOW button! (I paid $150 for it)

That example reminds me a lot of my capped bust quarter!

I have quite a few half cents now - love them! I love your 1849. As you are aware, this is a tricky date... and that AU58 is just lovely. The Braided Hair type is a great short set to collect (8 coins). You already have the 2nd toughest coin - go for it :) !

Great coins posted here everyone. I love seeing the half cents  !

I am a newer collector (started April 2020), and I primarily focus on U.S. Half Cents and Type Coins. Early copper is my favorite.

My first copper this millennium! Only bought it because I was disappointed I didn’t see any XF Barber Quarters at our annual coin show this past weekend. I had to spend money on SOMETHING!!

Buying coppers is a little out of my comfort zone but this seemed to be a very reasonable purchase.

    GC Auction last night.

Your coin is a C-2 R.3. It's the rarer of the two varieties that year.

    @asheland -

Nice one, Terry! Attractive surfaces, indeed. And the rotated reverse is icing on the cake.

In half cents, I’ve got Draped Bust and Braided Hair. Need a Classic Head type now. At least for the 19th century types. Dunno if I’ll pursue any of the 18th century types. I like those, but they’re pricey!
