New Quest - complete 50c date set - 1794 to present

gschwernkgschwernk Posts: 348 ✭✭✭✭✭

I recently purchased the 2 coins below:
1854 50C Arrows MS66

1879 50C MS67

I really liked them when I had them in hand. I have never done a 50c set so I decided to start a new quest. I have 3 goals.

I will be collecting date sets. I would like to complete the full date set from 1794 to present. I would like this set to be #1 in the registry. I would also like to have the #1 set in the Seated and Barber sets. These goals assume that Hansen retires his sets which was my reason for undertaking these goals.

They are beautiful! I assume that you'll be looking for the highest graded to accomplish your goal of #1?

I believe you have a head start on some tough types, no? Beautiful set when you’re done.

I look forward to seeing your progress on this set. I think Hansen retiring his PCGS sets will allow some collectors to Pursue new sets. When Hansen was involved with every set that existed it was tough to find an area to collect that you might be number one in eventually.

His collection is great but it took the wind out of many collectors sails.

Good luck, 217 coins in that set
I'm doing the cent version of that, 230 coins been at it for over 10 years and at #5 with a long way to go still need 58 coins and some really tough ones
Looking forward to seeing your progress

Great set to put together. It should take some time but doable.

Lofty goals. Some of the finest knows for the date are in pretty strong hands. Since you are touting registry, I image top grade always wins? Are you planning on any overdates (beyond the 1815/2)? Definitely a LONG term endeavor.

I believe I would stop at 1964, but understand the registry thing.

Have you considered using commems for some of the missing dates in the 1920’s?

Gonna take some deep pockets for a consistency of quality with your first two.

I do not see a date set of Half Dollars 1794-present listed by PCGS. Am I missing it?

I bought a number of coins in the ANA sales. I decided on the following plan:
    1794-1837 Everyman set. VF for 1796 1797
Seated High Grade #1 Registry set.
Barber's High Grade #1 Registry set.
rest to 2024 fill in with low cost MS64-67

I'd better hide this coin then.

What else did you win / find between the show and the auctions? There was some great stuff in the Paul Gerrie selections

Unfortunately, I was late to the game. But, I did pick up a few AU58s in the last session: 1813,22,26,29,32,34,36.
