this is (or at least seems to be) a Type I photograph of Mickey Mantle at his namesake Holiday Inn in Joplin, Missouri after the 1957 season. The glass wall case behind him was used to display several different awards, including most prominently the Hickok Belt (left, in case) for Professional Athlete of the Year, after his famed Triple Crown season of 1956. It was part of the Dugout Lounge portion of the Inn.

Big, fast and super skilled with a bomb of a slapper that was comparable to Al MaCinnis, unfortunately suffered from major depression/mental health issues that stunted his potential as a future HOF, but a great career nonetheless. Only himself and Lafleur have had multiple 50 goal seasons as a Hab. Loved Richer as my Habs fandom was at its peak late 80s/early 90s.
NICE front centering! I just don't understand why the ultra low population 73 OPC sell for less than Topps...yet the far more common 1983 OPC command more than the 83 Topps
It's the singer not the song - Peter Townshend (1972)
Just had a Vintage Value Bulk order hit. Not in hand but they're on the way. Tons of 7s/8s.
I was hoping for an 8 on the Ryan and Schmidt but didn't happen.

Any half grades?
If the Cey/Schmidt is a 7, why not 7.5 with that centering?
Another example of half grades having no meaning.
Very surprised to see the Yount at an 8.
I would have thought the edge chipping would have prevented any shot of anything over a 6.
They seem to be more forgiving on tilted images of late.
I was shocked that Yount got the 8 too. Going in I thought it was a 6 due to the chipping and tilt. I also got 8s on a Rice rookie, Lynn rookie and Hernandez rookie that are miles nicer than this one.
That order shows the wild inconsistency we are seeing now. In average the grades are what they should be but individually they are head scratchers. That Schmidt is a beauty.
I might be in the minority here, but I agree with the grade on the Schmidt based on the surface. That being said, I think it's a great looking card, but the 7 is fair. The Ryan is also fair with the centering and the slightest of tilts. The Yount is a bit of a puzzler, but I might have been staring at UFFDAH's Riddler card too long.
Admittedly, I know very little about these. I first became aware of their existence about a month ago when I walked into my LCS and there were about a dozen on display on his shelves. I immediately asked "How much?" and was prepared to purchase them all on the spot. The owner told me they were already spoken for, but the buyer had graciously let him keep them on display in his shop for awhile because they were so colorful and cool looking with the rest of his shop's decor.
I immediately set out to find some for myself, and recently picked up a complete set of all 24 teams in existence at the time, including the Angels "big A" variation.
They are made of a thicker cardboard stock, roughly 11.5" X 7.75" in size, with a hole punched in them for display. They are known as 1973 Fleer Big Signs, although they also appear to have been sold in 1974. The signs at my LCS still had the original K-Mart sticker on the back, and according to a former K-Mart employee that had visited the shop, they could read the code as June 3, 1974 when the sticker was applied. The Angels "big A" variation is assumed to have been changed for the 1974 edition, according to what I could find on the internet.
The set that I purchased did not come with a box, but this is a pic that I pulled off of the internet.
.
.
And without further delay, here are the signs that I purchased, many with the hole still intact. I love the bold colors and the additional action artwork included on several of the signs, though I don't understand why they have Pete Rose diving into home on a Padres sign...
.
My day at the National today was pretty disappointing. But one dealer did have quite a nice batch of 76s. Those purchases from him will add ~60+ cards to my set. Those include these three -
The Carlton & Carew are a bit OC but otherwise quite nice. The Palmer, however, if the best example of that card I've seen graded or ungraded.
It's like Christmas in July for me. I had another Vintage sub hit today and was not bad. Lots of 6-8s, but the Rose was a surprise. I've had that card for so long I don't even remember where I got it. I'd also sent it in earlier for grading and it was sent back ungraded with a Min Size. Glad I sent it back again...

Nice hit on the ‘68 Rose!
Thanks, but my favorite is the Casper. I was such a fan as a kid and I think that card is just one of the coolest football cards of all time. Centering killed me a little and I hoped it would sneak into a 9 but no such luck.
Photos are not great because still in hotel but couldn’t wait to share my National pick-ups. There was a lot more SGC vintage than
has been there in at least a decade. Maybe PSA was seeing the uptick at big shows and it prompted the purchase. First time in forever about half my purchases were SGC. I couldn’t be more excited to add these and a Musial rookie was a card that I could barely dream of owning. Had a great time at the show.
I’m building raw sets from 74-84. And in the condition I’m looking for, I know it will be nigh impossible to find the HOFers raw at this point. And in all honesty, I greatly prefer the visual presentation of the SGC holder. The white borders contrast better. The colors pop more. I think it can enhance a card’s visual appeal in ways PSA’s holder does not.
And @brad31 - how in the world is that Carew RC not in a 9 holder? Simply a stunning example.
I picked this up at the National. I needed a Pie Traynor for my hall of fame collection. Nice to also have HOFs Paul Waner and Arky Vaughn on the same card.
This order popped Friday and it didn’t go well. Actually, it may be the most disappointing order I’ve ever had with PSA. However, the people here are great so I’ll share the results anyway.

@1951WheatiesPremium sorry you were disappointed by the grades. Beautiful Mantles as always. Are those white marks on the back or are those just a function of the slab (assuming the latter).

Yes, it’s the latter. Thank you for the kind words; we all take it on the chin from time to time. It’s all good.
Yes - those are the famous Newton Rings. The plastic that keeps the item from sliding around is absolutely necessary with most of my order. PSA does a really great job slabbing the Jumbo items.
ETA: I had the wrong back for the Manny’s above. This is the correct one:

Pickups from the National on Friday. Was able to find a few good deals. Was looking for a PSA 7 Kaat and Oliva rookie. Only found 1 of each, both were way overpriced.

Wow great cards my man. Very impressive. Were most of them purchased from one seller?

The three rookies - Musial, Carew and Stargell were from the same dealer. ‘49 Musial, all the ‘58s except Berra, the ‘57 Berra, ‘56 Ashburn were from the same dealer and the ‘63 Mays and ‘66 Yaz were from the same dealer. The rest were purchased individually from different tables.
And these Star Wars cards were just laying around in my collection doing nothing for over 25 years…. Not bad results from the recent Star Wars special….
Not bad!!!!

Added a few more 75's....I used to only want 9's and am now very satisfied to own newly graded 7-8's.

Yeah the yount is a gift, in my opinion. the schmidt should be a 7.5. But hey, it's a start to me wanting to send in a couple.
The Schmidt looks superior to the Yount IMO.
No half grades at all.
