Replacing a key rookie from the mid 1950s, which I regretfully sold to a board member...I recently have finally found a suitable replacement.

Congrats on the Banks! That is one clean back. It is a beauty. However, this board member is partial to the one he bought from you as it is my favorite card in my collection.

I'd certainly call that a suitable replacement

Wow that old holder Schmidt is ugly. Wonder if it is cracked out for a different card. Grading got better but not that much better.

I came back to this thread 3 times now just to look more closely at the ‘54 banks. It’s very nice looking. Someday maybe I can upgrade my banks for my ‘54 set.

Thx bgr! I was fortunate to be patient until this beauty came long. I sold a very beautiful copy to Brad….it was as nice or nicer than this copy.

Jordangretzkyfan - what a beautiful Mays Rookie. Hope when the dust settles after his passing one like yours is still a someday card and not a never gonna happen card. That really is one to be proud of.

Agree. Nice, no print line on front or smudge on back. May have already happened---- card was under 2K back then.

Won this beauty a few weeks ago but a FedEx cross-up had me just receive it. I have really become a fan of the 58’s and it will probably be my next HOF set when I finally finish ‘61 and ‘68 (need only a few for each).

Congrats on the Koufax. I am trying to finish up the 58 set (need 8 big cards) and I have completed the 61 set years ago. Scary that we like the same sets. Good luck on your new collecting focus.

I will never tire of the 72 & 73 photos and how it seems like Topps just did not care at all what action photo they put on cards. There will never be such odd and terrible photos again like those 2 years.

    They are glorious.

On the 1958 Koufax (beautiful) if it wasn’t for the white spots by the red diamond and the right side of his neck what do you think it would get? 8.5 v. 9 v. other?

I consider these acquisitions... my June 1980-present special just popped. Some hits and misses. No surprise, they are still tough on the 90s refractors.

hah! text only for that post! Although I may line up the 10s of all those HOF pitchers and snap a photo. The gold refractors will look nice... Maddux, Martinez, Rivera, and Johnson!

I think it would have been an 8.5. I don’t have any ‘58 9s to compare to and have a couple of 8.5s. Think it looks like those.

1990's Chrome refractors are tough. Many are cut off center to begin with, then you have to find ones that have survived 25+ years without the surface getting scratched.

You got some good grades. Even the 8's will get good prices if you sell some of them, and you got a few great 10's. The 9's you got on the 2001 retrofractors are impressive. Those are SOOOO condition sensitive, especially how the backs chip so easily.

I think collectors are starting to realize how tough these refractors are to get. Starting in 1998, Topps Chrome was a 500+ card set & refractors were 1:12 packs. The odds of pulling a star, let alone a HOF'er, are astronomical. I can't imagine the refractor print run from 1998-2001 being more than 500-1000 of each.

This era of cards is my favorite. Refractors were special compared to the rainbows & one per pack you get today.

Thanks, I love this era of cards too. It took me a while to curate that group of 2001s. As you indicated most you’ll find are either very chipped on the edges or have touched corners on the back. And a lot of cards that look nice are trimmed. These were nearly pack fresh. I thought the Guerrero was 9 worthy.

I’ve always found the 97s to be tough. Centering is poor on that set and otherwise pristine cards can have corner “dings” coming out of the factory

Good stuff. I was going to ask how you accumulated such a large quantity of grade worthy raw refractors.

I have saved Ebay searches for 1999, 2000 & 2001 refractors, but quality, grade worthy cards are few and far between.

We are fishing in the same pond. Most of those cards I acquired on eBay, post 2020. I have about twice as many bball refractors from the same era that I need to send to PSA.

That Koufax is sweet. I call it the UFO card.

This arrived from Heritage today. I have been after a nice 8.5 for a while for auto... before it's too late.

great card i saw that one onthe heritage auction two weeks ago.

Beautiful Hank Aaron Rc…centering and lack of skewness are exceptional!

Saw it too and had just bought a 9. Yours looks exactly like mine and it is one of the nicest 9s I have. Great buy.

I thought so too, so I looked the cert number up to see PSA pics and the culprit is the back.
That OPC rough cut caused too much tearing on the back edges and with the black border, it really stands out.
The front though is 9 or 10.
