An Overton set of 1820 capped bust halves.....Post your 1820 CBH if you got one

In the CBH series, 1820 has the third lowest mintage with only 751,122, behind the 1815/2 and 1807. It has just 8 different Overton die marriages, with the O.107 being the toughest to find as it’s an R5. It also has quite a few different varieties making it even more interesting and challenging to assemble, including two different die marriages with overdates, the 1820/19 square base 2, and the 1820/19 curl base 2. It has a die marriage with a curl base 2 and a small date, two different die marriages with a knobbed square base 2 and a large date, two die marriages with no knob and a square base on the 2 but with a large date, and the toughest die marriage to locate which also has no knob, a square base on the 2 and a large date but missing the right serifs on the A’s and the left serifs on the E’s on the reverse. If all these different varieties weren’t enough, the final die marriage for the year, the O.108, also has a doubled die reverse, made from hub doubling, which can be seen on the left wing, talons, claws, leaves, berries, and arrow heads.

I recently and finally found the last die marriage I needed to complete the 1820’s, the O.106.
And so, here are all eight die marriages in order. Comments welcome...Enjoy!

Feel free to post an 1820 CBH if you have one!!!

1820/19 Square Base 2, AU58, O.101

1820/19 Curl Base 2, AU58+ CAC, O.102

1820 Curl Base 2 Small Date, MS63 CAC, O.103a (Ex. McClerg, Queller)

1820 Square 2 Large Date Knob 2, AU55 CAC, O.104 (Ex. Peterson)

1820 Square 2 Large Date Knob 2, AU58+, O.105a

1820 Square 2 Large Date No Knob, AU58 CAC, O.106 (Ex Pugh, Hamilton)

1820 No Serif’s, AU55, O.107 (Ex. Sears)

1820 Square 2 Large Date No Knob, MS62 CAC, O.108 (Ex. Eliasberg)

    Very nice.

Very tough die marriage set to complete, even in lower grades. To see them together in such choice condition is pure eye-candy. Well done!!

They all look like early die states. The stars aren't bleeding into the rims. That's what I like!

@drddm Love the Eliasberg 108. Do you know who owned it prior to Eliasberg? Was it owned by Clapp?

Thanks for all the kind words. As anyone who has tried to put together a set of anything knows, it’s truly a labor of love trying to find just the right pieces.

I’ve been fortunate in acquiring many of these coins, and am grateful to all those who have helped me assemble them.

@Pnies20 Thanks, but unfortunately my 108 was not described in the Eliasberg catalog as having any provenance, so definitely not part of the Clapp collection. I’ve always wondered where it came from prior to getting into Eliasberg’s collection, however I doubt I will ever be able to get that info.

Very nice - and also helpful. I was using your set to attempt an attribution of my sole 1820 half, and I've narrowed it down to either O.104 or O.105. Unfortunately, I can't tell them apart - can you give guidance?

  • coin22lovercoin22lover Posts: 3,497 ✭✭✭

That's incredible. Does your O-104 have any trace of the crack through IC?

The best way to tell is the spacing at 50 C on the reverse. Compare them and you'll see!

Check out the T to I relationship on the reverse. On 104 the left sides of both are in line; on 105 the i is centered under the right side of the T,

Thanks. I don’t believe so. The late die state, O.104a is hard to find.

The way I do it is to look at the D in United on the reverse.

The D on the 104 looks like it’s “falling off”. Here’s a pic of both the 104 and 105 reverse.
