Where would they be if they had kept Sale instead of trading him to get rid of his salary last winter. The guy they got for him was another worthless player that has been on the IR list all year. Picking up bargains to save some money is not always the answer.

Is there anything new happening with the Red Sox today?

Paxton to the IR after injuring his calf last night and a 2 game suspension for Duran for remarks to a gay fan.

OK, I'm gonna try this just one more time, then I won't mention it again...
The Red Sox came in LAST PLACE in the AL East, back-to-back. Now, if you failed in 2022 and 2023, and failed to focus on the needs of the team, which was obviously pitching, and made no major moves, you only have to have management look in the mirror. AND, on top of that, the manager was Alex Cora. They had all of the Fall and most of the Winter during those abject failures to plan, scheme, whatever to shore up the team. While Cora never fielded a ball, nor did he hit, he IS the heart of the team and surely has his pulse on all issues, personal, professional and otherwise. Perhaps they should have reevaluted the Sale situation. All this is ancient history.

Now, I still firmly believe the team's fate is already sealed, and they will not make the playoffs, either legit, or through the back door, aka the Wildcard. So, here we sit trying to figure what the hell are they thinking??? They are now stuck with Cora for the next 3 years...you know, the guy that was laughing like crazy when Smith was pitching in the 9th inning while the team was enduring being swept and losing 4 in a row, at one of the most critical times of the season. The cheater guy...who, IMO should have been banned from baseball.

I guess you can laugh at anything when you know you have $21 LARGE in guaranteed salary coming in. Signing him for 3 instead of 1 (and let's see), was a fool's errand. Your gonna get the same doofus, shaving, not shaving, shaving, not shaving, and always with a distant look of what to do next. I will never be convinced that there wasn't one very deserving manager out there somewhere to lead the team.

46 games left, the math is rapidly becoming a factor that the team cannot overcome. When those above you win and you win, no progress is made. When you lose and they win, the hill gets exponential higher and higher. Time to make peace with all this and see what's ahead, which is simply another disappointing year, led by incompetence, and lack of player performance. 7.5 back is hard to erase.

They should have waited on giving Cora more money. I think they should have waited at least to see if they could have won a round or 2 in the playoffs. Probably time for the Red Sox to get new owners .They need owners that love the team and put the team first.

Now this genius has forever scarred the team. When he's in the ball park, he represents the entire Boston Red Sox organization, from the ball boy to John Henry. No doubt players take a lot of crap from opposing fans, kinda like Altuve when he came up to bat...however, Altuve let it roll off his back. For Duran to speak out in such a manner is totally unforgiveable.

EVERYBODY remembers when the great Ted Williams spit at the fans in left field. That was in 1956, some 68 years ago, but those who were fans then remember the incident vividly. Yawkey (the owner) fined him a whopping $5,000. This sum was HUGE money off his $100k salary.

Duran has lost all respect from me. Now that he has been called on it and had a tiny dent put in his wallet, he has to live with that for a very, very long time. Oh, he's so, so remorseful, like those that get caught, they're always remorseful. He has incredibly embarrassed himself, his teammaters and the entire Red Sox organization. He's gonna wear that baggage I suspect for a very, very long time.

Memo to Duran...keep your pie hole shut!!

I say this...live and let live. If people wish to live their lives completely opposite to mine, so what?? As long as I am not impacted, nor my family, let them all do their thing.

You have to calm down Al or you will have a heart attack. Everybody makes mistakes in their lives. We don't know what transpired between these two guys. I know I have said things to people in my day that I have regretted. If you have not than you are a better man than me.

    Oh yes we do!

"During tonight’s game, I used a truly horrific word when responding to a fan," Duran said in a statement issued by the Red Sox. "I feel awful knowing how many people I offended and disappointed. I apologize to the entire Red Sox organization, but more importantly to the entire LGBTQ community."

He said "shutup you f****** fa***t"

He said this while at bat in the bottom of the 6th inning. I wonder how many kids, women, elderly and other LGBTQ fans heard this? Does Duran think he's above being respectful to some hazing from fans? His response was generated when a fan shouted "do you need a tennis racket?"

So, Steve, if you think this is a mistake, you have a very, very weird interpretation of mistake vs collosal blunder. Actually, I'm disappointed at your post...yet again, the Red Sox never do harm mentality that seems to pervade your posts.

How long would you have lasted in the casino if a disgruntled player was peppering you over you not giving a comp to the buff and you responded like Duran did? I'm sure the GM would simply say "it's ok Steve, you just made a mistake". NOT, you'd be bounced out of there and on your a** pronto.

Now that you know the facts, which you could have easily obtained, like I did, care to rethink that it was just a mistake?

BTW, my ticker is just fine, BP is spot on, thanks for the concern.

I don't know enough about computers to get that information. I also dont have a cell phone as when I bought one a couple of months ago I could not figure out how to use it even with my grandson trying to teach me. I did not know what he said but that was really a stupid thing to say. I would never say things like that to anyone and have worked with people regardless of their gender or sexual preference all my life and never had a problem. I settled for a flip phone which I can handle so my wife can call me when I leave the house if she needs me as she is handicapped as you know.

Eh I've said that word a million times and 99.9999999% of the time it literally had nothing to do with person's sexual. orientation

    The Mayor is getting involved?

Give me a break, the Mayor should concern herself with the million other things that are far more important and need to be dealt with in the city of Boston

@MCMLVTopps Love ya Al but I'm not on board with this whole thing being as a big of a deal as it's made out to be.

He apologized and will pay a fine, people say stuff they don't mean all the time including myself as well as multi million dollar athletes

It isn't what he said, it's when and where he said it. You cannot let fans bug you so much that you lose your cool like that.
It's not like he was playing poker with a bunch of buds. When I play poker at the Elk's, there are so many F-bombs that some losing players can't formulate a sentence without it.

When Duran is in uniform, he represents the entire Red Sox organization, not just a hot head that got pissed at a petty tennis racquet comment.

I disagree with your position. I do agree that the mayor should keep her mouth shut, and stay out of it, but she, as you know is partial to those of that orientation. How Bostonians could vote her into office is a jaw-dropping mystery to me. Her involvement is EXACTLY and perhaps those of others to come, who will now jump on the bandwagon to exploit a situation that should never have happened. Duran has opened a Pandora's box. Kinda like when a bomb goes off and the mushroom cloud starts to rise...we are in the early stages of the mushroom, maybe not.

Actions have consequences. Duran will not recover from this easily, it will stay with him for a long, long time, he didn't just touch the 3rd rail, he grabbed it and held on. Now he will pay not only a loss in pay, but a pall will envelope him.

I agree that in certain circles Duran's comment is considered innoucuous. But, opportunists abound, hopefully it all dies down and fades.

Hope you're doing ok. The glorious Fall in New England isn't too far away!

He just has to play well and it will be remembered. but not forgotten. We hear this every day of our lives unfortunately. Time has a way of healing things that are said when the heat of daily life gets to us and we say something stupid in retaliation to someones remarks to you.

The Red Sox are still in it until the fat lady sings and nobody is running too far away with a big lead.and We Have Hendricks almost ready to come back which should help the pitching. The fat lady has a sore throat so she can't sing yet anyway. GO SOX !

Itll be quickly forgotten. If his career never pans out it wont be because of that.

His jersey is now even one of the top selling ones in all of MLB.

No, it won't be quickly forgotten. It may fade over time, but it will forever stay with him.

Why dont the Sox bring Casas up now and let him rehab while playing where they really need him instead of in AAA. He hit a home run last night !
They need all the help they can get at this point so why waste it there.
Duran did what he did and will have to live with it so lets get on with winning a wild card spot.
What happened with Crawford last night to lose complete control in the 6th inning?
Cora got the bullpen up immediately so he must have seen something.
We are only 1 game out of the 3rd wild card spot as we have the tie breaker with Kansas City.
Short series can be won by any MLB team so GO SOX ! FIGHT ! FIGHT ! FIGHT !

The majority of sports fans never cared about it in the first place. The media will try and drag it out a bit then theyll move on to the next thing to try and make an issue just like every other time. The sad part is they make a bigger issue out of things like this and drag it out longer than they do when guys are arrested for domestic violence or assaulting someone in the club. Why wasnt the media up in arms about Pat Bev chucking a basketball at a fans head in the stands twice?

You are now officially over the cliff. Better check you BP before it blows a valve, your obsessing and irrational exuberance has finally gotten the best of you. Take a drive to Santa Fe and have lunch, not that far...you need to chill !!!

Who the hell are they supposed to fight? You want them to fight the opposing baseball team, the beer vendor, maybe the peanut guy? Geez, if I stop posting, you're gonna be kinda lonely on these boards, so try being a bit more earth-like and rational so others will join in.

Will you just sit at home in the Fall/Winter and watch reruns of the Red Sox? We ain't in the 50s, 60s, 70s or anywhere else except August 14, 2024. All that other stuff is long, long, long gone, stop living there.

I'm completely chilled my friend. I have my swamp cooler going full blast and my chair right in front of my tv with my favorite non alcoholic drinks in the frig. Only 5 more hours until game time. Maybe watch some Bruins games and contemplate the next Red Sox season. We don't even go to the casino anymore as it is to much hassle with her wheelchair. There is nothing in Santa Fe to see that I have not already seen.
My wife and I will just sit at home this Winter (celebrating 50 years of marriage by the way) and just enjoy each other after all these years so will not be lonely if no one reads my posts.

  • tommyrusty7tommyrusty7 Posts: 2,050 ✭✭✭✭

All I can say is I hope the Sox can win at least the wild card this year and leave it at that for now. There are not enough Red Sox fans on here anyway.

There is no sense even making comments here on this forum. The Red Sox team is exciting this year and no one is interested. I will just watch the games and not comment this year. I had hoped to create some excitement about their play but that is impossible here.

In all honesty missing the playoffs is probably the best thing they can do in terms of the longer term for fans. If they do get a wild card spot then anytime theyre criticized for doing nothing in free agency or very little at the deadline they can always just fall back on we made the playoffs and keep operating that way

You might want to ask tommyrusty why he changed the subject of this thread from "Boston Red Sox thread!!" to "Nothing here guys"? Seems like he doesn't like to be challenged, and for the umpteenth time he's decided to not comment this year. Sounds to me like he's the mad guy. If a fan wants to sit up front and yell who knows what at a player if the player responds yes that is okay. It wasnt that loud the players or ump just had mics on.

Dont try and act like fans arent yelling obscenities in the stands like its some Church

There is no impact on the Red Sox management/brand/team image. Suspending him actually had a bigger negative impact on the brand but made them more money in jersey sales

As for the obscenities, I'm refering to ONE incident, not an overall assesment of fan conduct.

Why would the media be complaining about the "surge", why would they care? It means nothing to them.
What media, I watch a fair amount of sports commentary. Care to cite a source? I don't think so.

Go ask them. Theres plenty of articles out there calling the people buying it names as well and I will leave it at that and not take the bait. It takes less then the time to make a post to find a bunch of them. You can start with CBS and go from there

So, you think it's ok, when a fan innocously hazes a batter, who then can't take it and says "shutup you fxxxxxg fxxxt"??
You don't see the seriousness of saying such a thing loud enough for untold number of fans near home plate to have heard his vile comment. Kids, moms, etc, etc. The impact on Red Sox management, the image it casts on the team. And don't change the subject to other lame examples, much like the upsurge of his jerseys selling. Next time you go to Fenway Park, make sure you holler out the same comment as Duran and see how that goes for you.

Don't post crap you can't defend. If you can post sources, or actual statements, I will happily post an apology. I'm waiting.

All it takes is searching Duran jersey sales, you could add spikes or surges or increases to narrow it down as well.

The jersey bit is true. It’s a top seller since this all transpired. It’s not surprising.

Probably because a large portion of people out there are absolutely sick and tired of the hyper sensitive and cancel you out for one mistake society.

Well, I see that Tommyrusty7 has again changed the thread subject line into a third iteration. The first was "Boston Red Sox thread !", then he went to "Nothing to see here", now he has changed it back to "Boston Red Sox Thread" without the exclamation point. I think he's done this in the past, although I can't recall the post. As we all know, only the OP can edit the original subject line, or content within.

He emphatically said yesterday (for the umpteenth time) "I will just watch the games and not comment this year". While he may not have posted, he certainly changed the subject line, thus in a sense "commenting".

So, after some reflection this AM, I've decided to leave this and any other Red Sox thread (or variations thereof) this season. I will only post maybe at season's end as to my long ago prediction that the Red Sox team would not be competitive this season. It is apparent that I am causing him severe anxiety and pretty much ruining his happy time concerning the Red Sox games.

I have challenged his and other's comments pertaining to the team and individual player's performances. I've pretty much gotten vague or inexplicable and illogical responses, or no response at all. Really pointless to continue...I'm not one to be a lemming and not see both sides of the issue. I have also challenged other posters, some have made their case, others crickets, and others just ignore the challenge, or my offered viewpoint. Perkdog and I are classic examples of being on different sides on the Duran thing. He and I have a long respect for each other, and we agree to disagree, I have always enjoyed my interaction with him on the boards and in many PMs over the years.

I no longer wish to antagonize Tommyrusty7 (Steve) and cause him discontent. His unwavering support of the Red Sox team is commendable, but IMO to a fault in some cases. I do indeed wish not to be the person who raises his blood pressure any further.

So, till the end of the season, enjoy what's left of the Red Sox season.

Hate seeing injuries. Os lost one of their better starters to the DL and Yankees probably lost Chisholm for the season with a UCL injury but its not clear if he needs surgery yet. He might be able to DH but Stanton is a disaster in the OF. He could potentially try and play through it since hes not a pitcher but that would likely mean moving him to 2nd if hes not DHing. Even if it just needs a little rest hes still out a couple weeks taking away one of their hottest hitters

tommyrusty7: I'm a fan of "da 'Backs". It has been a fun weekend watching the Diamondbacks beat up on the Red Sox on their home turf!

I had to watch it on one of those small pictures on MLB because it was blacked out in New Mexico. I am getting sick of all the games blacked out because we are close to Colorado and Arizona ! forgot what is was like back in 1948 when we first got our TV and the screen was so small it barely fit Clarabell on it ( Howdy Doody program for all you young wipersnapers) never mind no baseball at all. Your pitcher yesterday sure pitched a gem !

"Your pitcher yesterday sure pitched a gem !" Thank you, tommyrusty7! The two D-Backs who I really enjoy watching are Zac Gallen (I enjoy watching cerebral/thinking pitchers) and Corbin Carroll who leads the NL in triples (he's having a sophomore slump -- but he's playing great since the All-Star break -- a 4-and-a half-tool guy who has a weak but accurate throwing arm).
