Wow - this is where I come to avoid politics and the great divide in our country. Let’s keep it to cards.
High end vintage is healthier than most think. I have been outbid on everything I tried for in REA, current Heritage.
The ‘58 Clemente PSA 7 in REA went quite a bit over VCP, there is a ‘60 Clemente PSA 8 in Heritage I was bidding on - already over VCP with days to go. Bid strong on a ‘53 Paige on EBay - went for a nice price (but I was at least the under bidder). VCP is down on all these cards but in the baseball offseason like this - think we may have bottomed on the blue chip players. Have several bids in on PWCC (first auction I have participated in - figure with the ownership change will give them a shot). Bid over VCP on the cards I am going for and betting I won’t win many (or any).

I'v seen similar things with bidding. I am kicking myself for passing on a few cards in the last year and a half only to see them rebound and increase.
My method now is simple; if I see a nice vintage card I want that doesn't always surface(whether because of rarity or condition variability), I'm not waiting, because the future price is truly unknown, and in the end if the prices come down, it just means I could buy more nice cards even if I ended up overpaying for one during the high tide that I really liked.
Then if the world truly goes to chit, then it doesn't matter anyway. So may as well enjoy the present instead of worrying about what could happen in the future...but still always keep tabs and have some safeguards in place.
Never pay a commission to an auction company to sell your stuff. Make sure that has been eliminated from your consignment agreement
Always negotiate for a piece of the standard 20% Buyers Premium. If you are consigning over some juicy stuff you should at a minimum get the Hammer Price + 5% = 1.05
If you are consigning juicy high ticket/feature item stuff push for even higher. Push for 1.10 +
Uffdah, do they usually look at per piece or total of consignment? Would one 50k piece be easier for me to move the needle rather that 10 5k pieces? Or about the same?
Thx
I think it just depends. I've sent in stuff where I get 10% on everything and I've sent in stuff where I get a 5-6% on some and 10% on the rest.
Under your 2 scenarios I would put together what you want to sell, approach a couple Auction Houses (I tend to like Heritage and REA) letting them know you are considering a consignment and tell them you won't pay a commission and that you want and additional 10% of the Hammer Price. See what they say and take it from there.

Unfortunately the extremist Republicans can't seem to talk about anything but politics. Prices are coming down because of the Covid bubble bursting, I imagine prices will settle in with a slight increase from the prices just before the pandemic.
Good luck with your auctions, Monte! Knowing you, I'm sure the items are very high end for the grade and will do very well! I'll be interested to hear your thoughts after the auctions are over!

No doubt there are some people who have done better, but far more are worse off, thus the declining card prices. In 2021, after all the stimuluses were handed out card prices went through the roof, but for the last year and a half at least most prices are down, some significantly. The Real Estate market is practically zilch or worse. Affordable new home construction no longer exists because of regulations, costs of land, etc.
I bought my first house (interest rate was 7%) for 86,000. Nice first house split level, totally finished. That same house today (30 years later) would sell for $225,000 ( same rate 7%). Median income where I live is around $45,000 up about $6,000 from 1993. You do the math. People can't afford basic simple living.
These same people are the ones that help make the card industry thrive. Losing them, hurts the card industry. Personally I am with countdouglas, I'm doing ok, but my town/city is not doing better.
People were locked in their homes and had vacation money to spend on cards.
must be nice to go on vacations. between my job and coaching travel sports, i'm lucky to have a weekend off. i threw in the towel on coaching teams in november and will stick with my son. maybe i can go on one.
I do have this trading card and consider it the greatest trading card that has ever existed. This card can save the world. If this trading card does not win as the greatest trading card ever, then the United States will not exist starting in 2025 and all humans will be some sort of freakish meld of gross muck, with hopefully, the big comet coming to end it all, and let the cockroaches grow again to 20 feet long and rule this planet.
Unfortunately the extremist Republicans can't seem to talk about anything but politics. Prices are coming down because of the Covid bubble bursting, I imagine prices will settle in with a slight increase from the prices just before the pandemic.
Please give three specific examples of policies that "extreme Republicans" are supporting.
Since it seems this has turned political, name 3 things the Democrats stand for besides , the destruction of our schools, the antisemitism going on in our cities and universities and the complete collapse of our borders.
You can’t alienate half the population and not expect pushback. Everything you may hold dear, may be the opposite for someone else. The party of tolerance is anything but.
Come on guys, there is some good information in this thread. It would be a shame to get it scrubbed. There are a million political sites you can visit to duke it out with each other. Card sites are a welcome respite from political bickering.
the thread is about when the prices of cards are going up. ever how you want to look at it, for the smaller to middle type of collector that spends $100 to $200 per week on the hobby, it's been a difficult ride the last few years. Rent or real estate has gone through the roof, probably wiping out this type of collector. Like I said earlier, my first house is $140,000 more expensive but the median income of my locality has gone up only $6,000. SO affordable living is just really hard for the blue collar/new college grads.
Tack on 20% higher commodities and there alot of people struggling. Trying to dismiss the situation by saying that I'm ok so why isn't everyone else, sounds out of touch to reality to me.
The COVID stance is plausible because so many small businesses went under. Some localities near me had half their restaurants and other small businesses close. And many of those people probably lost everything. Many will never be the same.
Overall though, if talking politics, the whole govt is to blame. They don't seem to be passing policies to help US Citizens. We seemed to be worried about practically every other countries people than our own. To me, the policy of out sourcing a lot of our jobs over the years has never made sense to me. We used to have a booming economy near me about 40 years ago than they started moving toy manufacturing and textile jobs, then NAFTA moved a ton a jobs, now we don't want to produce any energy (coal or gas), like China and Russia do. We used to be #1 at energy. IPHONES are big but they are manufactured in China, Solar panels - China. Now they want to remove farming and farmers. Just what in the heck jobs do they want Americans to have?
Back to cards. Have noticed that high for the grade are going for strong prices. Most of what I bid on this month I tried to get between current VCP and highest ever and didn’t win. On this card I really loved the way it looked and was willing to set the new high as I think it is under-graded. Two others also bid above previous high and the new high was eclipsed by $60. This is my favorite Brock card (as a Cubs fan) and I wanted a nice one.

Yes, the points being made were in relation to price of cards and not in the typical political nature, and it affects us all in our collecting(and of course our lives too).
Also, when does theft and crime start to really take its toll on prices for everything. Theft is basically legal in some states and goes unchecked. What happens when the roving mob groups of thieves realize there are thousand dollar cards stored in bunches at some locations? Collectors(citizens) don't seem to really care until it affects them directly.

Did anyone see what some of those 70's and 80's Stargell cards went for in Mile High's auction the other night?
A 1980 Topps Stargell PSA 10 went for $5196. Wow!
A 1976 Topps Stargell PSA 10 went for $5676. Wow again!
A 1975 Topps Stargell PSA 10 went for $13,394. Insane Wow!
Wanted to get this thread back on track with some interesting card stuff.

Me too. For the past couple years I’ve been buying his stuff and never understood why they were so cheap.
I picked up a ‘78 PSA10 a year or so ago for around $200. Just felt like any 78 in that grade and price was a great buy and now I’m really glad!
What prices are coming down ?
The prices of cards are coming down. Who would have ever thought that Tom Brady cards would drop like they have.
