Show: Tampa convention center, Sept 11 (Wed) through Sept 14 (Sat), 2024

The following is what I recall from standing in on a discussion about the show. I did not take notes and am going by memory. So the final (or real) information may vary.
I thought some might find interest in. This is another new show that I will be looking to see how it goes (probable attendance).

At the Baltimore show Larry Shepherd was distributing information and sign up if you wanted it for a new coin show in Tampa. The location is the same convention center that the winter FUN show has been at in the past.

The public show days are Sept 12, 13, 14 (Thur. Fri. Sat.) 2024. Wednesday is a day for dealers with the first part of the day (AM to early afternoon) for a dealer day and additional cost if you want your table at it also and then later in the afternoon as the dealer setup. The public show to open on Thursday. I did not hear anything on early bird, cost if any, hours or similar.

It was mentioned that several hotels had been contracted (a couple across from convention center) and that all contracted hotel rates were below $200.

It was mentioned that this date is the week after the Long Beach show (Sept 5 - 7, 2024). This was stated as the best available date(s) that were available. It was mentioned that future show dates would move to be better aligned with existing show dates.
.
.
My thought on this part is that the Sept. Long Beach show is not on a consistent week. It varies from the first week in September after the holiday, to the middle of September, to the last week in September and maybe into October (like last year). The Baltimore show is similar as it varies from early November to late October (like last year). I am wondering or curious where this show could be placed or if it could move around similarly between these two shows. This all presumes it is successful and continues on. The other unknown is the IMEX show and if it will continue on in this same two month time frame.

Update 8/21/24 Dealer List Link (Notes Bourse Table numbers coming soon)

Interesting, but probably a little too far for me.

Should be successful. Looking forward to it happening

We thought the same thing when he came around with the information. He is also experienced in doing shows. Now starting a new one is a little more. Hope it works out.

So from the show website I missed the initial day by one. Dealer Tuesday and show open Wednesday.
Here is a copy and paste of some information from the show webpage press release.

    https://www.gacc.show/20231107-press-release-show-announcement.html

"Initial plans include a large bourse space that can accommodate nearly 600 dealers’ tables, plus a separate collectors’ annex with another 60 to 70 tables. A dealer-to-dealer trading day will be available for all table holders on September 10, the day before the show opens to the public."

"“We are looking at making this a semi-annual event with the first two in September of 2024 and a second event in March of 2025. This is the new age of coin shows,” he emphasized."

Some slow progress on the website. Hopefully it continues.

Added the hotels a couple of months ago. (I notice previously that Monday night was tough, did not check now)

And the show schedule with some miscellaneous information.

Also the current online dealer application form is indicating that the front row and front section are sold out.

The literal peak of hurricane season with a waterfront venue in the Zone A evacuation zone? Probably got a good deal on the convention center, so the daily admission fee is a little surprising. That said, I intend to be there!

Nothing is as expensive as free money.

Interesting indeed. About a 2-2 1/2 hour drive for me. Plus a good time of the year. I swear the Sun Coast has it going on in the numismatic world. Multiple shows throughout the month and now this.

I’m on the Space Coast and we have one show a month and to the best of my knowledge - not one single real LCS. 🤷‍♂️ Exactly how many dang retirees live in Tampa????

Having fun while switching things up and focusing on a next level PCGS slabbed 1950+ type set, while still looking for great examples for the 7070.

The website has been updated some but no bourse layout or list of dealers. Friends table location got move a little as Larry said he was trying to get people 'arranged'. Hopefully the dealer list and bourse layout is coming soon. I am still hoping this will be a good show (many dealers attending). PCGS will be submissions only according to their website (maybe due to the Long Beach show ending only a few days before this show starts).

Keep an eye out for the hurricanes as some got caught or left early for the ANA. Then it moved so slow that some leaving the ANA got delayed going back to east coast (NY....).

So there has been a lot of 'talk' about the future shows. I decided to ask Larry S. and this is it:

There are two shows per year (not one). Larry said he was unable to get the Tampa location for 2025 (a little bit of a longer story of why or what happened that I won't go into). So for 2025 the shows will be:

Broward County Convention Center, Fort Lauderdale FL April 1 - 4, 2025

    Donald H. Stephens Convention Center, Rosemont IL Sept. 23 - 27, 2025
(is this going to be close to a Long Beach show again?)

Rosemont in September? If the Tampa show turns out well, Rosemont in September just might kill whatever shot the ANA in OKC in August had to not totally suck.

It's very interesting that these guys are trying to shoehorn not one, but two new major shows into the existing rotation after the Nashville show did so well last year that it immediately retreated from once per year to once every other year.

Yeah, that Nashville show had a flyer at the ANA stating Sept 3 - 6, 2025. And again the Long Beach show is normally in Sept. (currently I didn't see it listed on their website but should show up after the one this Sept 2024). I know of a few dealers who are not going to LB in Sept 2024 due to doing the Tampa the following week. Anyone else have a show for Sept. 2025 :)

Yup. TBD. I know the Nashville show had many challenges, and the question remains whether they were due to location, the promoters, etc., or whether there is simply no room for more major shows.

We will soon see, since, if anyone can be successful, it will be Coin World and Shepherd. Just interesting that they have already planned 3 shows in the next 13 months after Nashville had to pull back immediately after their first show.

The calendar is already well established and well spaced, so anything new is going to invariably crowd someone else out. If this thing is successful, not only will it hurt next year's ANA show, but it will absolutely bury the Nashville show. Given how Nashville turned out last year, who's going to make that trip 3 weeks before Rosemont, and 2 weeks after OKC? It might also turn LB into even more of a regional show than it already is, if they are going to go head to head with them every September.

You hit it right on with:
The calendar is already well established and well spaced, so anything new is going to invariably crowd someone else out.

I just checked the Baltimore show for March 2025 and it is - March 27 - 29, 2025. Guess when that is?

If one guessed the week before the Fort Lauderdale FL show of April 1 - 4, 2025, then they would be correct. Could see some, and particularly those on the west side, not go to that Baltimore (fly across country two weeks in a row or days apart from finish of one to start of another). And as you note if the new show is successful more may opt for it over Baltimore.

My immediate reaction is how much will this take away from the Long Beach Show? Which dealers will skip it and go to Tampa? Ditto re collectors.

Personally, I live near Long Beach and don't travel to shows, so I hope that a show in Tampa doesn't negatively impact Long Beach. This September won't affect me, as I'll be out of the country during this time period.

I've never attended Long Beach, but from many conversations with collectors and dealers (California residents included), the overwhelming consensus is that it is dying. From what I hear, Long Beach used to be THE show. Now, they're renting out booths to flea market vendors. I would certainly attend if I were local since I try to go to as many shows as possible, and I would like to go at least once, just to see it for myself. It's a long flight, and I just have never been compelled by what I hear/read enough to work it into the schedule.

LB was my first big show and is very easy to get to for me and I loved it.

That being said, I skipped summer and I'm skipping fall and don't feel a little bit bad about it. I'm wavering whether I'll go to the spring show, which is usually the best of the three.

Yes, it's a new show, but it is being run by people who know how to do this and I am confident it will be successful.

Dan, it WAS the show. Met Walter Breen there and bought his Coin Encyclopedia, which had just come out. And it doesn't have the vibe now that it did then. CA doesn't make it easy for vendors re sales tax. If the vendor is under the minimum sales amount re getting a sales tax permit, on an otherwise taxable sale, it makes sense for the out of state vendor to ship the coin to the CA buyer, rather than sell it at the show.

Still, where I am in my collecting it doesn't make sense for me to travel to attend shows.

The Dealer List is available (may be more coming).
Notes the Bourse table list coming soon.
Kind of looks like a 'full' list (whatever that really means :) ). :)

I'll be at the Long Beach Show (Table 529) and will also be at the Tampa show (Table 901). That will be a fast turn around for me, but I am thinking the new Tampa show will be worth it!

2 close shows for you. You will have your hands full for 2 reports. Best to stock up on the wine. Good luck. Wishing you no travel nightmares.

Very fast turn around. I am not sure some realize how close it can be. If one stays at LB until Sat. (I know some will leave on Fri.) and then wants to make the dealer day on Tues., then flying on Mon. That scenario only has Sunday between. You have a little advantage not having to 'travel' (fly or long drive) to LB but still quick.

I unfortunately know about the travel nightmares :s and there is a lot more to them than the following. But at least this (below) is looking good right now for travel, trip and stay. Hoping it holds up in two weeks.

When I first heard about this show, all I could think was wow that's right in the heart of hurricane season.

For what it's worth the long range 06z GFS operational was showing some activity picking up in early September. The 12z dropped it though. Formation or potential impacts are impossible to predict with certainty that far out. Hopefully it will stay quiet and allow for a great show to everyone attending.

The bourse floor plan is on the website and the current list of dealers. But I don't see anything (yet) that ties the dealers to the table location - Did I miss it? Tried clicking a few things but only got a downloaded floor plan . Hopefully this is in-work and will show the dealer table number later.
I guess I can post that but not worth to much. :)

Just 10 days until the start of the inaugural Tampa show. I thought it’d be nice to get some forumites together, so I arranged a couple of times during the week where a few of us can get together for some coin talk over a meal.

Shoot me a PM if you’d be interested in attending either:

    Tues 9/10—“Dealer Dinner”, 6-8 people
6:30pm after dealer day; day prior to show open
The Pearl Restaurant, short walk from conv. center

    Fri 9/13—“Collector Lunch”, 6-8 people
12:30pm on what I expect will be busiest public day
Harpoon Harry’s, located on-site at conv. center

Note these aren’t strict dealer/collector requirements, anyone is welcome to join either. And if anyone is down on Friday evening, some tavern/bar hopping around Tampa may be in the cards.

Nothing is as expensive as free money.

Just checked the show link again. Still nothing added to indicate what table each dealer is at (that I can find).
Hope it is added soon. If not, then hopefully a show guide will have it. I usually type/write down several dealer table numbers.

As far as the Hurricane outlook, as @PocketChange longer range graph indicated there is a little more activity but still looking good.

    .
Now I don't know the normal for Tampa (or Florida) but this number below is Ugly. If you don't know anything about Dew Point, then this number is Not good. It kind of means there is no time of the day where it is comfortable outside. :o:) Might want to bring the short and/or light stuff. But then the convention center could be a refrigerator. :) So..... :D
Hopefully the below every day chance of rain goes away for next week.

While the list of dealers with tables was posted a week or so ago, the booth numbers associated with each dealer has not been posted yet. We have had a number of last minute bourse applications come in recently. We’ll be updating the list of dealers setting up. A updated list of dealers setting up at the show and their table numbers should be up on the website before the show.

For now you have the list of dealers setting up, save fir some last minute sign ups.

And yes there will be a program at the show.

@lilolme Yes, that dew point is typical—September is rather hot and humid here. It’s also the rainy season and afternoon thunderstorms are likely, but they’re usually short in duration. Don’t leave your coins outside folks.

Nothing is as expensive as free money.

Thanks for the response @foodude. Hope the table list with numbers makes it soon. I should note that I was trying to be a little bit funny or sarcastic or combo of with the comment on the Show Guide. :) Guess I missed with that but good to confirm that the normal show guide will be available.

@PocketChange Ah, did not know about the normal Dew Point there in Sept. Mid to upper 70's can be tough but nothing I have not seen before. Now some others I know, well.... :#
Maybe the show will get lucky and have a shift downward next week. :)

I’ve lived on the southeast coast of Florida for 6 years now, and there has not been one notable hurricane to date. I don’t expect that to go on much longer, but fortunately I had a new roof and impact glass installed this past year so I don’t have to worry about it when the time comes.

Lived in south and central Florida for about 35 years and I can assure anyone that has even the slightest hurricane related concern that there is always enough advance warnings to accommodate any potential tropical storm or hurricane issues.

You can regularly book a flight with Spirit or Southwest from many destinations with just a week or even less notice for not much of a fare difference than a month or two out. That’s been my experience anyways.

Y’all will be fine anyways at this point. Ain’t nothing of concern out there for the immediate future. Come enjoy the sunshine and the 2-4 pm showers! Dress lightly and bring your sidearms for security. No place is 💯 immune to the doers of evil. Difference in FL, just like our sister state of Texas, is that you’re encouraged to shoot criminals. We won’t be mad at ya. The Sheriff out in Hillsborough will probably even give you a medal.

Having fun while switching things up and focusing on a next level PCGS slabbed 1950+ type set, while still looking for great examples for the 7070.

I didn't. We got an estimated 20" in the first week of August, and a lot of people near us got flooded out.

So about time for some who are going to travel, depending on location and dealer day or not. The potential hurricanes are still way out in Atlantic. Except for one that might become one that is in the gulf and predicted to head north up coast and maybe into the Texas - Louisiana border area around Wednesday (subject to change) :) . Tampa weather: forecast not much changed from above (warm, humid, chance daily of showers / rain.

On the website there is an electronic Show Program. It has the dealer table numbers on pages 18 through 21 - link below if you want to note some table numbers for planning or other. Also has schedule times and Bourse map in show program or a larger one in second link below.

Good luck to all that are going and especially those with longer travels.
