My 7 year old grandsons first coin purchase ....... Let's grade it !!!

For my grandsons 7th birthday I told him he could buy any coin(s) he wants with a budget of $200. As is, he has been collecting coins since he was 5 years old as I would always sit him down with me while I would view my collection and I would give him info on the coins, values, history, and provenance (if applicable).

Here is his first "BIG" purchase pictured below and for a kid I think he did quite well! I've always told him to buy what he "likes" and what he "enjoys" and keep the financial aspects and implications separate.

He just purchased the coin online yesterday so we have not been able to put our due diligence on the coin yet but he is curious about the grade? Based on the pics provided by the seller we have a good guess but he just wanted to get info from you folks here as he uses my account to browse all the info available here.

As is, what do you think it would grade with PCGS and should he submit it for grading or keep it raw in his album ?

Let us know .......

AU-55, good choice for a first coin.
(Glad his first purchace wasn't a bunch of cull large cents, buffalo Nickels, and seated dimes)!

It’s better than that. I have seen worse in Mint State holders. It does not seem to have the usual rub on the knee, but there is some friction in the fields, especially the reverse.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

AU55. A nice album coin. I wouldn't pay to have it slabbed.

Nice coin. I hope my grandkids will enjoy collecting. The oldest is 3 and i just started showing her coins. I will introduce them to the hobby and maybe they will like it. Not sure on the grade as I collect uncirculated coins. Nice post!

Nice choice. Usually see a D mint mark on a 26. Little scarcer and nice head detail original 👍

Is that pvc on the reverse from TES in States down through the 1st 3 stars? Might need a soak in acetone.

I've tried to get my grand kids (10 and 12) interested. No luck. Enjoy him while you can. In no time, he will be off to college, married and you will be a great grandfather.

That looks like a solid shot 58 coin, and probably needs a quick acetone bath.

Your grandson has a very good eye.

If he works it right, I bet he can add a nice Merc' and a later date Walker, both in similar condition, and make it a heck of a trio.

What an excellent coin for a 7 year old - WOW!

I am a newer collector (started April 2020), and I primarily focus on U.S. Half Cents and Type Coins. Early copper is my favorite.

The kid’s alright👍. I’ll say 55 due to the better luster. Nice choice

Wonderful coin for a 7 year old to be buying, I really like it!
I have practically no experience with this series and am sure I’m shooting low. I see great luster on the reverse but have a harder time with the obverse, thus I’m saying AU53.

Thanks for all the posts folks !!! My grandson has been reading them and he thanks you all for the info.

He said he is going to work on collecting a full type set of USA silver coins in AU - Uncirculated condition. He doesn't want to
certify them yet as he said he likes raw coins. I explained to him the facts on "counterfeit" coins so he knows what to look for with regard to collecting raw coins.

Since he has "lofty" goals to say the least, I teach him to work for what he wants and work he will !!! I have increased his chores 3x around the house and he has accepted that whole heartedly as he understands that I have spent years building my personal collection so he knows it will take him a few years and hard work to accomplish his goals.

Another stipulation I put on the deal is that he also has to maintain his current 3.8 gpa in school and I will continue to fund his endeavors.

He said his next purchase will be a WL 50c so I will post that when he gets it. He is a pickey buyer so it might take a little while for him to find what he wants so stay tuned ......

If he wants to? He likes the SL series so I encouraged him to look at the T1's so he has them on the radar but he hasn't committed yet as he said they are too expensive now and he would have to work too hard to acquire them (and he is absolutely right) ...... Lol

Interesting call. Looking at the pictures I kinda thought the same. Will see when we get the coin in hand! I will post info on the luster, and original patina as these would be the deciding factors for me ...... I Will DM you my findings and post here as well so stay tuned

    I'm leaning AU58

for next coin a Mercury dime or Walking Liberty half if they like design

or Barber or Washington quarter if they like the denomination

or an early commemorative for something different

41-D, 43 and 45. The 45 is the clearest and the other 2 have a little color. Let me know which one your grandson selects and PM me a mailing address. Happy birthday!

It would be interesting to hear what in that SLQ attracted his desire to own it. :)
