Starting a new series - Standing Liberty Quarters in VF35 - Count: 11

Happy Saturday!

While I’m primarily a Barber Nut, I’ve decided to tackle the SLQ series in VF35. I’ve always been attracted to the Standing Liberty series, and I probably have a dozen or so MS PCGS and NGC examples. Sadly, on my budget there’s no way I could ever complete the series in Mint State. That said, I prefer circulated coins anyway. Anybody else working on a similar set?

This could take a while, as I prefer a dirty, circulated look. Here’s my modest start. Wish me luck!

It quite a ride, especially for the prior to 1925 coins when the date was misplaced and wore off very easily. I have had Mint State pieces, which had a weak date.

I had a want list customer for these when I was dealer, by he expected too much. He thought that "Full Head" met full strike with every design detail strong. He thought that every Standing Liberty date and mint mark combination should look like a 1917 Type I. There was no way I could fill that want list.

That should make a nice set.
I have been working on a set of VG10 and that is hard. So I have expanded to include VG-8 and F-12, Plus I have a lowball set of SLQ also.

Smart choice to go with the circulated grades and have them all match rather than high grade common dates and lower grade keys. Nothing nicer than seeing whole sets of coins where they all match in grade/appearance in my opinion.

Awesome! My son is doing that set in VF-XF. He's missing the 16 and 3-4 other commons. He has the 23-s, 21, 27-s etc.

Here’s a contrary suggestion for you to consider. Obviously, there’s no right way or wrong way to collect. Each collector does what THEY are most comfortable doing, not only financially, but also aesthetically.

How about doing a DATE Set? Only 14 coins are required, and YOU can decide if you prefer the easier or tougher mints for each year! Because fewer coins are needed, if you choose, you can then go with XF and/or AU. This would still give you that circulated look that you desire, AND you can still pick coins that you feel match. An advantage is the coin details would potentially be more attractive to you in those higher circulated grades. This way, you can have your cake and eat it too!

I like the coins you have chosen and it will be a great looking set. If I might suggest, you may find your journey possibly more rewarding if you examine coins up to EF45 for this series, as it is my experience that many VF35-EF45 pieces look darn near identical and the overall aesthetic of such coins can be quite similar, as well.

I collected them for 50 years. Just sold my collection two months ago. It's my favorite coin. But I decided to jump into bullion. My set was in AU 55 to 58, except for the overdate and the 27s. Very costly colllection. That's why it took me so long to get them. I jumped into Walkers, but my gosh are they expensive in AU. So I stick with bullion, small US currency, Foreighn currency,errors, key dates, and whatever strikes my fancy. Good luck with you Standing Ladies. I love them.

Picked this beautiful 1921 up about a year or so ago and it took me quite a while to notice the slightest rub accounting for the AU grade. I’ve seen other ‘21s in competitor’s holders in unc. showing a flatter front leg.

Thank you everyone for the great advice. I’ll see how things go for awhile, and I may need to revisit some of these ideas. Thanks as well for the encouragement...I'll need it.

Also, while digging through through my stack of PCGS SLQs, I stumbled across one I had forgotten about, a 1919-s
VF35. I had picked it up at the Boeing show in Seattle in 2014. This one fits perfectly with my set. That brings me to four.

This is a great set to put together in middle grade. I would concentrate on getting the early dates from 1916-1924 first as the later dates from 1925-1930 are always readily available. In my book all the early dates excepting the 1917's are keys or at least semi-keys -you don't find many of them. I am lucky to have purchased mine in the 1970's when the prices weren't too high. I do not have the 1916 or 1918/7-S Good luck!

Beautiful design, but I did the Type Set, only three different ones. I still have the Type I which I sold once and ran back to buy her back, and the Type II. I sold the Type III, Recessed Date, and have not tried again yet.

(I have a very high ranked FH DATE set, but as you correctly point out in your article, I see that many of mine are not full strikes, but only full heads).

Excellent dissertation. Your write up is the first date-by-date article concerning SLQ's that I have seen.

I love the 35 grade!
Like Tom said though, there are alot of VF30's and XF40's that look exactly the same...
But if the hunt is for matching labels as well then I get that too!

Love the series myself. I started a circulated set, with intent to enjoy look of old silver and content with full dates.

One thing led to another, a little more detail here, ultimately a touch of luster there, and before I know it I had a set mostly XF-MS. It also inspired my MS registry date set.

I finished my set up today the final coin was the 1916 in AU53 PCGS CAC. The set looks fantastic all spread out on my desk. Island City Standing Liberty Quarter set CAC #3 the top sets are high end.

@willy , WOW!!! What an absolutely GORGEOUS set! The cherry on the top is that EVERY coin merits a CAC sticker, and you even have a sprinkling of FULL Heads there as well. Super high luster on virtually every coin!

While most collectors prefer toning to demonstrate “originality”, I’m with you. So while it’s likely that many of these were dipped at some point in the past, apparently it was done gently enough that CAC still awarded each coin with their coveted sticker!

You've really got a nice range of AU53, AU55, & AU58 grades here,

With this group, do you feel you can see why each coin received it's grade and do you feel you can now accurately grade SLQs?

It took me about 3 years to finish the set. I committed to selling these through Gerry Fortin in a auction in January. But after having them all pulled out and sitting on the table it makes one think that was a mistake. The set looks much better than I even remember them as I bought them individually. I need funds to finish my US complete type set which is down to 10 coins all upper 5 figure coins. Going to spend some time with the set as a whole over the next couple of weeks. lol

My grading skills are just so so. I am a bid fan of CAC like MR Winesteven

Still plugging away on my SLQ PCGS VF35 set. Slow going to say the least. Up to six so far. Only 31 to go.

It's been tricky to locate dirty, circulated examples. When I do locate a VF35, they are often dipped white, and just not for me.

My latest pickup showed up on eBay (the 1920-D below). It had the 'look' so I grabbed it. Nice coin!

Ya, I acted quickly on the 20-D after stumbling upon it, as it was a perfect fit.

I’ll definitely chase the keys too. I really won’t collect a series unless I can complete it. That limits me on what I can collect, but sobeit.

Picked up a couple more 35s. Snagged a 1917 Type 1 from L&C Coins, and a 1926 on eBay.

It’s been slow going, but I don’t give up easily. The search shall continue!

There was no such thing as slabs when I built my Standing Lib set but your coins are what I would have chased too. Never been a big fan of blast white coins. James

Dave99B; love the look of your quarters. I have a partial set in an old LOC album, mostly F to VF, I enjoy picking up nice ones raw at shows. A low intensity way to collect.

Those are all fantastic sets and when viewing a coin individually, I prefer a slabbed coin, but I must say, when it comes to seeing a whole run of a series, I much prefer the look of an album's page full of great looking coins.....
