    Nice pick up man!

Is that a retained cud at the end of the die crack coming from the tip of the leaf?

I don’t think so, i believe it’s just a prominent die crack on the HM-1 variety, which is the more common variety available.

Won't hazard a guess at the grade, but that's a wonderful coin for your collection DD. You are building an impressive assembly of great gold coins!

Very kind words as always, Dan. However, I must insist that you throw out a number if you can. There hasn't been many guesses yet and I'm feeling like a red headed step child 😂

Yikes. I struggle with gold so I will compromise and say AU!

That’s a nice piece of old gold, Dan. Looks like great originality and surfaces.

I don’t own any classic head gold (sadly), and I don’t have any other guesses to go off, but put me down for AU53.

Nothing is as expensive as free money.

Man, this is a tough one. I don't see enough early gold to know how it's graded.

I really like the coin - super original!

    I'll guess AU50.

Cracked up gold is about as fun as it gets.

  • CladiatorCladiator Posts: 18,070 ✭✭✭✭✭

oh yeah, I'll guess 58. Is some of that softness just weak strike because of the die condition instead of actual wear?

This quarter eagle series really varies by date/Mm. I would check coinfacts for this issue and compare auction comps of other 39-O

    High AU. Great coin.

Love the look Dan, and the dies cracks add great character in my eyes ... as far as the grade goes, it looks 53ish to me

Also, I love the reverse lettering and arrow heads ... they almost look counterfeit if you don't know they're real

based on photos i would guess xf40 or xf45. i think it's a nice coin and who doesn't love an O mint coin?

    I guess AU58
It’s got great surfaces and the right amount of dirt.
    Nice pickup!

Are you using “details” in the literal sense, or as a problem coin. If the latter, what makes you say that?

Minimum AU-55 coin, with AU-58 possible. A lovely Sheila indeed.

The video makes the coin looked cleaned. Literally like a slick waxy detailed pos.

Pictures show it would straight grade.

Let me see if these would help, admittedly I’m not great at pictures and it’s tougher with these smaller coins.

    Beautiful coin Dan!
I’m saying AU-53, mainly because I’m having trouble with the pics.
If in hand, the luster really pops, then I would be in the upper AU camp!
Edited to add: Took another look and adjusted my grade, and I do believe it will bean!

Seems like it should go AU55.... Nice old O gold.... Cheers, RickO

Nice looking. I will guess 45. Original thought was AU, but I dont see much luster. Very nice example that anyone would be proud to own.

Gold is the area I know least about. But, that's a beautiful coin. Congratulations!

I am a newer collector (started April 2020), and I primarily focus on U.S. Half Cents and Type Coins. Early copper is my favorite.

I try to be an optimist; I'll bet it squeaked into an XF45 holder and got the cac sticker to boot!

  • willywilly Posts: 338 ✭✭✭✭✭

Nice coin I bid $5,045 plus fees and knew the coin would go for more. I was chasing other coins.
The price was only 10% over CAC pricing so no big deal for a nice coin.

Thank you for a very interesting post. I had thought it would be a 45 but I got to your reveal before I got to the end of the thread. Most likely though I would have "guessed" 63 in respect to your great eye for coins. But a little too much wear on the hair and on the right wing tip to be AU.

Did you look at the pictures of the XF45, AU50 and AU53 examples that @DeplorableDan posted? His coin (including the hair and right-facing wing detail) looks better than the 45 and and 50’s and quite similar to the 53.

You’re certainly entitled to to your own opinion, but in my opinion this coin is about as original as they come.
