bagofnickelsbagofnickels Posts: 349 ✭✭✭✭

Hello everyone. I thought I might post a pair of Denver mint mercury dimes I am fond of as a guess the grade. Both are NGC examples. The images are by @FlyingAl, who did a wonderful job, thanks again. I'll update this post with the grades in about 24 hours. Thanks to anyone who comments in advance.

1938 D

1939 D

Very good taste and very nice photography. Please post more often to counter the parking lot finds. Lol

I’m going to guess 66FB for both but I could see them in newer holders with slightly higher grades.

Both very lovely. My guess is 66FB for both.

They are quite lovely examples in hand for sure. The 1938 has booming luster on the reverse that I think I was able to capture. The color on both is very attractive, and quite stunning at the right angle.

I do think the grades are accurate.

66FB if that isn't a large scratch on the neck.

    67FB

Thank you. I agree they are a nice pair (and accurately graded imo). You did very well with the images.

I will say @gumby1234 is the only one who mentioned the fine scratch on liberties neck on the 38.. It is not too distracting in my opinion but it is there, and of course will affect the grade.

Thanks to everyone else who guessed and commented.

MS66FB and MS67. Do not believe the 39D would garner the FB designation.

Okay folks. Time for the reveal. I was beginning to think no one would get it right, despite quite a few posters being very close. Then @pursuitofliberty and @ricko showed up...

The 38 D is a 65 and the 39 D a 66. Both have full bands. While I'm pleased to see many people guessing a point higher on these I agree with the grade NGC gave them. The 1938 D has good luster, strong bands and the color is great. However the mark on liberties neck holds it to a 65. The 1939 D does not have luster that is quite as nice as the 38 but it has fewer marks. The bands on this one are not quite as rounded as the 38 but still in my opinion (and NGC/CAC) are still split and rounded enough to to get the designation. I like the two of these as a pair. I think they match each other quite nicely and have the look I prefer most on my mercury dimes.

Thanks to all who played and a special thanks to flyingal for the images.

Well I was on point on the 38. I said 66FB if not a large scratch on the neck. I think the 39 would k d probably upgrade to a 67FB, but I would k d leave it in the no line fattie.

Yes you were, I was surprised that no one else mentioned the mark on that one. I agree and would rather have the old holder over a new slab in 67. I am a fan of the green Fatty holders.

@bagofnickels I definitely saw the horizontal line on the neck of the 38 but I thought it was a toning line, not a hit. Hence my 66FB and 66FB guess. Hard to tell everything from photos and I am guessing others may have thought the same.

    Ah. That makes sense.
