A friend was contacted to see if he had any interest in this one:

Pretty easy to find the genuine example; cert:

Images courtesy Heritage and the auction listed on the cert:

I can't imagine anyone would actually buy this...

Is the fake one in real PCGS plastic? I see the logo. Most ive seen have no logo imbedded in the plastic.

Most modern counterfeit slabs have the logo in the plastic.

There are so many counterfeits popping up that in a couple years the BST will be flooded with "WTB - Real Coin in Real Slab"

The barcode is clearly different... but many buyers will not even look at that... The crooks are getting better, and, unfortunately, inexperienced collectors will get burned. Thanks for posting this one... Cheers, RickO

I agree with the plastic logo thing recently. Not sure why so many recently have not had it. But in the past many or most did have it. Strange how it shifts but might be related to who is buying the fake supply stuff. However, this slab has several things wrong with it. Some more easily seen than others. To me the older slabs can sometimes be harder to detect.

That is the first pedigreed coin/holder that I have seen counterfeited. Apparently, the Chinese counterfeiters are going through auction archives, and copying everything they can find.
Unfortunately, Chinese counterfeit items are becoming a huge issue in all kinds of consumer goods - clothing, makeup, toys, collector items, etc.

The font appears to be incorrect.

The label color is way off. Coin is definitely wrong.

Placement of date and gold shield is wrong and so is font style.

Most of this wouldn't be known though if no pics of original coin or holder were available.

And color is not right on the slab label, but that could be from the photograph.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

That is sad. Some poor collector will think they have a key coin for their collection and find out, who knows when, it is counterfeit. They will immediately think, but it's certified! to no avail. Sad. Just imagine if the counterfeiting occurred on this scale in the old raw only days. No forums for info and very few books, if any, to help. Wow, I would have been screwed for sure.

@jesbroken It wasn't nearly the same scale, but there were quite a few counterfeiters around before certification. I actually walked into a B and M and looked in the first case and asked the dealer how much for the counterfeit Morgan. He said how did you know its counterfeit. I sent it in and it came back in a bodybag. I had 3 books on counterfeit detection at the time and read each one cover to cover. Knowledge is the best defense.

Look at the type font! Clearly different, and one frequently seen on these bogus slabs.

  • I for one am so grateful for this forum. I've learned so much here. This is one of the most important things by far. I run all the cert numbers on pcgs coins with TV's before I buy them and I will continue to. With rare morgans we also have VAMs which come in handy once a coin is in your hand.
There are also several other ways to stay safe. Known dealer with lots of feedback is one. It's the slabs without TV that scare me.
The question that lingers in my mind is how many collectors have been screwed. It must be many otherwise these bastards would not continue to go through the trouble of manufacturing them.
The same is true of Rolex but not necessarily made in China. Japan manufactures Rolex stainless steel and two tone submariners with real gold. You can take them apart and not tell the difference with the high end watches. The stainless steel watches forget it they are practically complete relicas.
I believe in most cases it boils down to where you buy the coin. The same would be true of a watch. Many Rolex watches sell without boxes and papers. I know this is a coin forum and I apologize for discussing another collectible but we go through the same thing with them. So many people walking around with $5000 stainless steel submariners who have no clue they have been burned.
It's a sad state of affairs.

Fake coins - and watches - are big business now. I have a gold Omega Seamaster watch (yes, authentic) I acquired new, many years ago. Would be risky getting one today. Cheers, RickO

And another to hit a Coin Dealer- owners were upset and said they would take it up with PCGS...

If you look around places like Alliexpress you'll see holders with the PCGS emblem along with hologram stickers that at least from the photos look like the real thing. Plus free shipping to the US. :#

I recently saw an add for " replica" Rolex watches. They were selling at three price points, basically good , very good, and 100%. They came right out and advertised that their " very good" would fool most people and their 100% would fool everybody except a trained expert. They offered two day express shipping to the US and took PayPal.
They were priced at like 150 for the cheap one, 400 for the very good one and 800 for the 100%.

The 100% are as good almost as a genuine with an eta valijoux 7750 or 7755 movt. which is about the best movt. on the planet Rolex uses their own proprietory movt. made in their own factories just like omega and their axial speed master and seamasters movt.
