Update: Coins stolen
![Burnie](https://us.v-cdn.net/6027503/uploads/authoricons/gopher.jpg)
Unfortunately, my home was broken into this morning. It's been a while since I've taken newer coins in my collection to the safe deposit box at the bank, and so I was sitting on around $15,000 worth of graded coins. Now it's too late. Coins, cash and jewellery all gone. I'm annoyed at myself for not being more careful, but it's done now.
Any advice for what I can do beyond contacting local coin stores and pawnshops about stolen coins, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Common thieves likely going to a pawn shop which is where the police will help.

I would contact the TPG and give them the cert#s for the coins.

Starting with a location (city, state) would be helpful.
Wow, so sorry to hear of your misfortune. Definitely our hobby's worst nightmare.
1. Home owner's insurance?
2. File Police report?
3. If they were graded coins hopefully you have those cert numbers that can be traced through various on line searches.
4. Contact local coin clubs.

Sorry to hear of the loss. Get with the local cops and drop lists of the items by your area coin and pawn guys.
FYI- Most Home insurance does NOT cover numismatic coins unless you have a specific coin rider on your policy. Most home policies cover "collectibles" up to a certain amount, but- guess what? They don't consider coins as collectibles without that rider and regular appraisals of value. So absent said rider you only get face value for them as if they were cash.

This. ASAP. That’s a shame. Being burgled is the reason I have alarm systems and robust backup. Still, I can’t shake this feeling that this was in someway an inside job. At least information about your hobby was shared ( accidentally or otherwise).
Hopefully contacting Doug will help. 🤨
🎶 shout shout, let it all out 🎶
That’s horrible. I hope you get your stuff back

Hope you get your coins back!!! It is all post like these that made me put all my coins in my banks vault and will always keep them there and any new coin will go there as well. Not worth the risk.

I get that feeling as well how many people knew you had those coins at home? Do you have a home safe or just basic security? You should get a safe if you don't have one get a large sized heavy safe (water & fire proof) and get it bolted to the floor. But keep your best coins at the bank.

So sorry to hear this. Beyond notifying the police, I'd definitely notify any and all pawn shops/coin dealers in the area. These perps are complete morons, and will often attempt to fence things locally. Again, so very sorry to hear this. What a terrible violation of your home and sense of security.![:'( :'(](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/cry.png)

Thanks everyone. I feel like a complete fool. I should have either had them secured at home or placed in the safety deposit box.
Hopefully, this post helps someone else before it's too late.
If you get a lot of coin related stuff in the mail you might consider getting a PO box for that.
Your not a fool and you didn't make a mistake. This is your home and you were violated.
I have OCD. If someone stole from me like this I would not touch a thing.
I suggest you call local law enforcement immediately.
Its possible they may have an idea already who is doing this. They know the crowd. These people do this, get caught and continue to do this. Most of the time it is an addict.
Dusting for fingerprints has come a very long way. They are lifted, scanned and run. The database is incredible. If they did not wear gloves there are prints somewhere and can be found using a spray or powder.
If this just happened call the PD and do this.
They can run fingerprints and ID a perp in a matter of minutes sometimes.
With that dollar amount it may be passed along to another agency.
Man, I am sorry to hear that. I hope they catch the perp and you get those coins back.
Wow, I wish I lived where you do.
Where I live the cops might do that for a murder. Might.
@Burnie try to determine if the perps touched anything, for touch DNA evidence. Also some perps smoke, check for discarded butts. Trace amounts of DNA can be grown or amplified in order to submit to the database. Unsub DNA remains in that system until there's a match. Good luck. Peace Roy

Well where I live we have police detectives who do there job. You can laugh and joke but the fact remains that if they were in a cabinet it touched a doorknob that you haven't touched they can lift prints and they are scanned and run.
Yes they do get caught from time to time.
At least it's only money. Your safe and that's the most important thing.
Sometimes burglaries go terribly wrong.
Technology has come a very long way. I think you might be surprised.
I am truly sorry that this happened to you.
Sounds like you were not at home during the theft. That is a 'silver lining'. Things can be replaced, you cannot.
Edited a word.
I’m sorry to hear of the loss. I, too, felt violated when my house was broken into…twice…six weeks apart. I never felt safe even after I installed an alarm system. I wish you the best.
I'm sorry to read of this terrible news.
Aside from contacting the local police, your insurance company and Doug at Numismatic Crimes, I would strongly suggest you start a registry inventory at both PCGS and NGC and list all the coins that were stolen and certified as in the inventory. In this way if a coin is subsequently sold, without being cracked out, and the new owner attempts to add it to a registry set you will then get a notification and can go forward.
Good luck.

For for thought.
Hopefully anyone that's really active on eBay, especially seller's, uses a PO B> @BAJJERFAN said:
Especially if you sell and ship via USPS using your home address for returns. It's conceivable that criminals are monitoring eBay transactions in their local areas by zip code.

Damn, sorry to hear that. Were you home at the time?
"When they can't find anything wrong with you, they create it!"
Sorry to hear brother. It has to be tougher on the emotional side than the monetary.
No, we were all out at the time.
Interestingly, the bathroom cabinets and bathrooms were ransacked (looking for drugs maybe)? All electronics in the house untouched...
Have you considered the possibility of an inside job or related to your deliveryman?
Where are you? Ballpark? Just in case

Its an awful feeling after somebody breaks into your house. Police got DNA from the perps blood at my house. They didn't take any prints. He was caught a year later. Court ordered payments ( which you don't end up getting ) Hes free on the streets and when I see him I feel liking driving up over the sidewalk and mowing him down. But luckily for him I am sane and don't do it, but bad thoughts come to mind.

@Burnie .... Very sorry to hear of your misfortune. Take all the actions enumerated above. I hope the police did a crime scene study and took any available evidence. Being in slabs, the coins will likely get cracked out and sold for melt. I hope you get them back, but it will have to be fast or they are gone for good. Cheers, RickO
My heart hurts for you. Not just that your stuff was stolen but such an invasion of your privacy, to know somebody was in your home is an eerie feeling and uncomfortable. I hope you get your stuff back and the person or people responsible are apprehended for closure on your end. Jim
Collect raw morgans, walkers, mercs, SLQ, barber q. Looking at getting into earlier date coins pre 1900s.
Where I live you can't get the doughnuts out of their hands.
Unfortunately in this day and age, most local police departments won't do anything about theft. It's up to us as citizens to install security systems, cameras, safes, and anything else for theft deterrence that we can dream up. Seeing as how they left all electronics untouched, but ransacked your coins, jewelry, and possibly drugs, tells me that the thieves were most likely not kids, OR it was somewhat an inside job as mentioned above. A crooked relative? A delivery person?

I really appreciate all the support and suggestions from this forum. This has been a very unsettling and difficult situation. I know these things happen all the time, but when it happens to you, it's a shock.
you were scouted before and they found out info on you and hit, planned ahead of time
I invite you to explore a selection of coins for sale at the link provided below.

One of my customers went through the same thing. His collection was not of great value, but the sentimental value cannot be priced in dollars. He was livid. First thing he did after calling police and filing a report was to scour eBay for "stuff". Oddly enough, within a day or two he found a proof set, which just happened to have a "love note" from a relative written on the outer envelope. There it was , clear as day. The fact that he had other things with her writing was enough for the eBay dealer to pull a list of stolen items from that venue before it was gone for good.
He got his stuff back from the dealer, although he had to pay what the dealer paid the thief . End of the day, the law and justice system work....... slowly, in most cases; and seemingly never in others.
Probably cracked out, but from the coins listed they wouldn't need to be sold for melt. None listed could be distinguished from any of the others made so in reality could be sold to anyone and no-one would know without the slab.

OK, so apparently nobody but me saw the humor (or irony) in @Fireman786 responding to a post to try to help @Burnie (who interestingly spells his name as Burnie rather than the more traditional Bernie, lol).

Update: So it turns out the theft of my coins and other valuables was an inside job. My soon to be ex "son-in-law" who we have allowed to live at our house for over a year was arrested this morning for bank robbery. Not just one bank, but 5! During the search of our house this morning by multiple law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, they found pawn shop receipts for coins and jewellery... This is where I'm sure I'll find my coins. My daughter is devastated and we are all in shock. You never think this kind of thing can happen to you...
Family and friends..........gota love it
I hope at least you recover your coins
Sorry for both you and your daughter...........

Don't be so sure! I don't know what the law is in California as to how long the pawn shop has to hold the items before they can dispose of them. In some states it is a short as 7 days. This happened over 3 weeks ago you need to hurry if you want to retrieve your items.
Wow, that’s crazy, 5 banks. I’m glad you and your daughter weren’t harmed by someone that crazy sounding.
Mr_Spud
I’m so sorry my friend…. i have a similar story with my son in law…
Coins not withstanding i truly hope things turn out ok with your family…

Sorry to hear but you're still within the window to possibly get some of your stuff back. I hope it turns out well for you.

Wow. Sorry to here this. Hope your family can pull together and get through this.
I do have some experience like this. I discovered my nephew (who was living with my elderly parents at the time) was dealing crack. I worked with the Sherriff and long story short ended up duct taping my nephew and holding him tell the Sherriff came. It was a tramatic day to say the least. so don't feel all alone. James
Sorry to hear that. Hope you get your coins back
Sorry to hear. I know how it feels. My ex son-in-law was no winner. I hope to hear you got the coins back soon. Our daughters can really pick-em.
