Die cracks/breaks

lobo54lobo54 Posts: 135 ✭✭✭

Not really my forte', but this one had so many on both obv. and rev. I couldn't resist. Pictures don't show the number of cracks by far. Appears to me these dies were ready to disintegrate.

Does make you wonder just when in the minting process the die shattered and the machinist finally noted it.!

Can't really see them but I know they are fairly common on this series.

Soak your coin in acetone to get your fingers oil off of its surface - then hold your coins by the rim.

Will have to take your word for it on the cracks.... Just cannot see them in the blurry pictures. Die cracks are interesting though... and when one sees a coin with multiple cracks, we wonder if it was about to shatter. Cheers, RickO

@lobo54 welcome, best to post close, straight on, in focus pics. Lots of experience here that appreciate sharp images. Zoom in, crop out the background. Good luck. Peace Roy

Here is the Capped Bust Quarter in my Type Set. I know most try to get unblemished pieces with perfect strikes for the type... but this one had too much character to pass up. The die crack starts to the right of the date and bisects the entire portrait of Ms Liberty.

@lobo54 Cool looking coin and a story teller.

This one from coinfacts looks to have about the same die state or amount/degree of cracks as the one in the OP. Also noting the shift in the strike on the bust which kind of indicates it is breaking up.

I've always liked the circular cracks often seen on this issue:

I also like this one, giving poor Miss Liberty a headache:

That's mine for sure except yours has nicer color.

I agree, got as close as the phone camera would allow. Tried to angle the shots to highlight the cracks.
"Zoom in, crop out the background", your talking to a guy that still has an 8 track in his truck, LOL

The 1836 B-3 meets the definition of a shattered die - at least three cracks from edge towards center. I probably should not have sold my grey dirt example ex Reiver:
