It's probably just shadows and reflections, because I can still see the full outline of the letters IN.
Shadow on the reverse left side.
What yosclimber said.
Also the not smooth looks like some die wear, pitting, rust or whatever.

Looks like die rust. There appears to be some die rust around the right side of the reverse from the "O" upwards, also.

Polished, and some die rust. Nice look overall!

Both photos are likely taken with the same camera and same lighting setup,
so there should be a high correlation between the two.
Roger B. says that this is just heavy die wear, not die rust.
I agree. The die should have been retired before this. Perhaps Philadelphia was not expecting to sell as many Proof sets in this year as they did.

Never saw this image before on the obverse as being a bit cheeky.
Looks like it belongs or I have to get out more.
Nice toning .
Die wear - Thanks. I had looked as some coinfacts images and saw a similar disturbance in this area on some but to a much less degree. I had thought similar - about time to change the die (on a proof). The mintage of about 3M probably had something to do with it I'd guess. Relatively inexpensive so would be interesting to have one to this extent as an example but nothing I would order up or be looking for at show or similar. So probably not happening. Don't know how common this is to this extent on proofs of this era.

There does seem to be a surface anomaly between the I and the lapel... a small disturbance... cannot tell if it is die rust or other surface aberration... Cheers, RickO
