Draped Bust Dime - GTG and your opinions? Update VG08

1805 5 berries, this came in yesterday from an old collection. It should be off to PCGS in a week or so. Most likely it will end up in my type set.
What do you guys think?
Normally, I would like one a little bit higher grade, ideally VF, but I think this one will work for me. I really like the look of it!

I think it’ll grade F12. Did you soak it at all to try to get some stuff off?
Coin is details VF 35 perhaps EF 40 damaged (pin pricks)
I'm seeing VG10 maybe F12 details... super tough issue!! I'm not sure how the TPG's are going to evaluate this piece... the small pock marks on the obverse could be an issue. Regardless... nice score!

VG10 and not sure it will straight grade (why not already in a holder ?);
It all depends on the price.
I'll go F12 if it straight grades
Looks like a 20 to 25 to me.... Long day today....worn and a tad abused.... Cheers, RickO
It looks like a VF-20 to me. It has some better sharpness, but it got some marks also.
I think it goes 15 or 20. Beautiful coin from a very difficult type!

I think it just makes VF20 by wear but may be downgraded to F15 because of the marks on the obverse. It would be an easy sale regardless since it is an uncommon type. I never owned one.
If you think that type is tough, try the half dime of the same design. The 1800 and 1803 are the most common dates, and the only dates that seen fully struck with any regularity.
I haven’t done anything to it. It’s in a flip waiting to go to PCGS.

Here's my 1801 PCGS VF20 CAC for comparison. I would grade the OP's coin less than VF20 based on hair detail and the strength of the shield lines / motto. It looks to have nice surfaces for the grade.
Fine details obv damage IMO
Fine 15

Pleasing coin. F15 to VF20 details (IMO), but still attractive. Nice pickup!

F-15 was my initial thought. Not sure if it will detail, but I don't see any significant damage.

I'm going to go ahead and say it's an F13.5. F12 if it straight grades, F details if it don't. Any idea what this stuff is?
No idea, but it's got dirt and gunk all over it. I was going to acetone it, but decided against it. It's insanely original, and no damage all, it's the dirt that looks like marks.
It's likely shipping today to PCGS, going express. I eagerly await the grade and true-view!

Details-wise, it looks like a 15. It does look like it has been beat up a bit, and the reverse pic makes me think it is bent.

It mailed a few minutes ago. We'll see what happens in the grading room.

Best of luck and I hope I'm wrong

I think it looks to be about the same grade as mine. Rhedden’s one that is a 20 looks nicer than my 25 though

Fine details.

Here is a pic of my VF25/CAC.
12, I like the coin, but it may not straight grade.
Not sure if it won't get a details grade, but it looks like a 15 to me. I do like the coin.

There are stronger details on your coin than mine, but I think the grade on yours was held back a bit due to the mark on the shield.
VicPortland's 1805 is very nice for the grade.
It came in an old collection that the owner inherited in the 1970’s and he literally sold it all this past week.
Seeing the way the stuff was stored, there’s no doubt it’s all been packed up since the 70’s. Very Dusty.

To me, the portrait details look a little to worn to make vf, so I'll say F15.
I’m hoping for a F12. It would go well with my draped quarter and half.

It has good details, probably some slack will be conferred as is often the case on these. F12.

Acetone won't hurt the piece a bit and might get the red stuff. Use toothpick to help dislodge the red stuff. Just don't rub the coin after soaking in acetone. Soak, rinse in distilled water, and pat dry using microfiber cloth.

What do you think about asking PCGS to do a restoration?
Nah. I actually like the grime on this one.
I trust the true view will show it properly. My cell phone shots really don’t do it justice. Through a loupe, the grime stuff really isn’t bad looking. At least to me.

Glad it graded straight. Few of this type do.

That's a fair grade for the piece.
Very interesting and instructive thread! By the way, I really like your photos of the bust dime paired with the war nickel.
Yeah.
it does make a cool size comparison. 👍
